These are problems in the field of mental health, especially unprocessed traumas that are showing up in many different ways. By studying the situations of a large number of young people, we found that they need more support and understanding from their environment as well as greater understanding of themselves. Many of them feel misunderstood, helpless, confused and blaming themselves for their inability to find a solution. As a result, this increases the feeling of inferiority, hopelessness, unmotivation, incompetence, fears related to the future and the threat of succusion of high expectations by family and surroundings. This is also supported by horrifying statistics, which testify to a large number of suicides among young people, increasing mental distress, youth addiction to substances, and long -lasting and unsuccessful treatment with medication. Despite the accessibility of various tools and methods which are becoming very easily available, in the absence of proper understanding, they do not help much. We have found that young people have a problem transferring the theory into practice, or first of all, have already huge difficulty identifying problems. Also most tools that are available target only symptoms instead of providing long -term solutions. Young people have lack of control over emotional reactions, and youth workers do not know how to respond or approach them most effectively.More and more people working on youth projects or in youth centers are aware of the need for greater competence in this area. Youth workers are individuals who play an important role in the development of young people and often establish a deeper connection and trust, which some young people do not get elsewhere. As such a relationship plays an important role and helps young people open and talk about personal distress, it is even more important to build on the empowerment of youth workers. With this project, we want to provide concrete tools and methods for easier work with young people who face mental distress and build a greater understanding of the functioning of mind and body. Activity will also ensure greater self confidence, self understanding, the ability to recognize one's own automatic behavior, regulate emotions and face traumatic events. We think that first and foremost, youth workers have to build an internal balance and better self understanding so that they can be a better support to others. They will first acquire the theoretical basis, where complex information will be presented in the most simplified manner, and for the easier understanding then the theory will be linked to practical examples of concrete situations. Participants will also gain practical understanding through various methods and tools that will be tested firsthand and later serve as a tools that they will be able to include in their youth work. Most of the methods that the participants will be introduced to, have already proven successful in the past, for overcoming fear of being judged and for creating a sense of connection and support. They are designed to help young people achieve a better understanding from where the feeling of guilt, automatic reactions, and lack of confidence are coming from. The purpose is also to gain self -esteem, and the awareness that, as individuals, we have a much greater ability and capacity to deal with situations where we find ourselves when we build greater self understanding. With this project, we want to carry out two activities. Besides the training we would like to upgrade our work in the coming year with a strategic partnership project, through which we will connect with similarly functioning organizations that have alike understanding and are already active in this field and also want to achieve greater positive influence with more effective and accessible methods. We want to see that more youth workers have accessibility to effective tools and methods that are easy to use and focused on the current needs of young people. To this end, we want to have a feasibility visit as a second activity. Through this meeting our goals will be to join forces, share knowledge and experiences, gained through past work, to check our compatibility, establish a good foundation for successful long -term cooperation and to develop a concrete strategy for our work. Through the exchange of good practices, knowledge and the acquisition of competences that we will gain during the activity, we also want to raise the quality of the work of our organizations. With this feasibility visit, we really want to approach the heavy and complex issues in the most effective way, ensure quality work and to achieve a greater effect in the area of youth work in the long run.<< Implementation >>We want to carry out two main activities through the “UNDERNEATH THE SURFACE” project. The first is a 6-day training, which will be supported by virtual meetings before and after the implementation. It will be held in Maribor and will be organized by Zavod Voluntariat. We will have 2 trainers and 21 participants, 3 from each country. There are 7 different countries included, which are Spain, Hungary, Montenegro, Poland, Northern Macedonia, Lithuania and Slovenia. Participants will have to be over 18 years old with experience in youth work, the ability to communicate and work in English language and actively participate in all activities. Some other very important criteria will be interest in the topic, for personal development, in gaining competences, in sharing knowledge. They will also have to agree with the implementation of a local event that will follow-up the activity.Great emphasis of this project will be on achieving greater understanding about mental health and the empowerment of youth workers. The methodology will be based on non-formal education. Many diverse, creative and innovative techniques and tools will be used, which will help to keep the attention despite the intense program and complex topic. Participants will be encouraged to set their own learning goals and be initiative of achieving them. The work will be based on a very interactive approach to help them feel as an active part of the learning process. Participatory and connecting activities will allow the creation of good group dynamics and build trust within a group in which individual opinions and personal boundaries will be taken into account. This will ensure an environment that supports the achievement of the set goals. Knowledge will be reinforced through theoretical and practical approaches in relation to cases from everyday situations. Practical implementation will ensure consolidation of understanding at a deeper level and make it easier for a later use in youth work.Activities will support the development of a clearer understanding of what is happening in the background of the problems, on the level of the body and the mind, and how to approach them in the most effective ways to achieve good and lasting results. A wide range of diverse workshops will ensure learning about useful methods that will support logical understanding, as well as the ones that support coming into contact with our unconscious parts and help processing information through physical movement, artistic or creative expression and non-verbal communication. All this will be supported by the theoretical explanation to achieve a deeper understanding of what is happening in the background, for the greater ability to distinguish between many options and to choose the right method in right situation.Another activity will be a 3-day feasibility visit, with the help of which we want to apply for a joint strategic partnership. Our desire is to bring our past work and experiences to a higher level and therefore achieve bigger impact on youth work. Since this is a project that will be much more complex and demanding and because we don't all know each other yet, we need a lot more preparation and planning. In our opinion this meeting will assure good foundations between partners and more authentic, successful future cooperation which will bring greater results. This activity will also be organized by Zavod Voluntariat. It will take place in the municipality of Ljubljana. From each partner organization, which is planning to be involved in our strategic partnership, one representative will be attending. We are Lithuanian, French, Slovenian and international youth health organizations. Together with the facilitator of the activity, who will take care of the smooth and efficient process, there will be 5 people at the meeting itself. The condition for choosing representatives was the interest in mental health issues, desire to make changes and our ability to commit to the project long-term. We were also looking for a variety where individuals will be able to provide professional knowledge related to the topic, as well as the ones who have necessary experience in the implementation of the strategic partnership project itself. The first part will be intended to get to know each other in two parts. Personal presentation on a deeper level and presenting the experience of partner organizations with the exchange of good practices. We will do different kinds of team building activities to connect, build our group dynamics and get to know our personalities and way of functioning. The rest of the activities will be directed towards acquiring even more competences through planning and learning about different stages of the project and through strategy developing. We will also seek to provide personal development of individuals, a clearer picture of a long -term common vision and confirmation of our compatibility as well as future cooperation.<< Results >>Participants and representatives of organizations who will attend one of the activities will improve a number of competences which will contribute to personal growth and greater self-awareness. This will benefit us in the long run not only in our work but also in personal life and professional development. We will gain more competitiveness in the domestic and international labor market.Through the training course, participants will get equipped with skills that will empower them as youth workers. It will become easier to control and recognize various emotional states and automatic reactions and gain a deeper understanding of their identity and functioning of their body and mind. They will have a greater ability for active listening, non -violent communication, to understand their own needs and set boundaries. Better self-understanding, new tools, knowledge, practical experience and learned methods on how to face stressful situations, will help them maintain the stability in the role of youth workers. As a result, they will be a safer environment for young people to open up, feel more understood and accepted. More confident and empowered youth workers who have greater awareness of social, cultural as well as personal differences based on a better understanding of the influence of environment on personality formation, as swell as their better ability to understand multiple perspectives, for critical thinking, recognizing the needs of young people and their activities based on fear, will provide more efficient support and understanding. The likelihood of conflicts will also decrease. As for partner organizations, we will raise the quality of our work through activities. Representatives of organizations will improve many competences, especially in terms of better teamwork, greater understanding and clearer communication. We will bring new ideas about possible improvements of our work, programs and their support activities, based on the exchange of knowledge, experience and good practices, which will take place during the feasibility visit. Rise of the quality will also be contributed by more qualified youth workers, who will gain greater ability to deal with young people who are experiencing personal distress and mental issues. With existing partnerships we will deepen our bonds and establish strong ties to help ensure new long -term cooperations. Our awareness of the importance of respectful communication and close cooperation with partners during all stages of the project will increase. Organizations will improve the effectiveness of future projects and activities and provide more opportunities for local young people, better mentoring and contribute to raising community awareness of mental health. New local events by participants and promotion, based on activities, will increase the visibility of our organizations.Young people from the local environment, who will attend our events or come in contact with the promotional material, will be reminded or become aware of the opportunities offered in the form of international Erasmus+ youth projects that will stimulate their personal development. They will obtain information on where they can turn to when needing support or in case of desire to develop competencies.A significant impact of activities on the local environment will be to raise the general awareness of people about mental health. Youth workers are also friends, children, partners and members of local communities who have daily interactions and relationships just like any other person. We believe that it is precisely these interactions and these loved ones that are most influenced by changes in individuals. In these relationships, the most trust is built so they are often the source of the greatest influence. There is also the most exchange of information and communication, which is also non -verbal, happening during this. For this reason, we believe that big personal changes in individuals bring a long -term impact on the people around them and their local community.More local activities, promotion, personal conversations and exchange of information in connection with mental health will raise the general awareness of local communities and encourage more open communication about personal mental distress by reducing fear of judgment and shame in relation to the topic. As far as regional and national levels are concerned, greater influence is expected by partner organizations more active at national level. Though organizations will be promoting open events and workshops, organized by our youth workers, on social networks, which will also reach individuals outside our local communities.Disemination of the results will be international. Especially based on the application of a strategic partnership, we plan to establish wide network of organizations that we want to include in all the phases of the project. During the discussions with partner organisations we realised and agreed, that there is a need to have a training course which is focusing on such aspects as active participation, intercultural learning, evaluation, measuring impacts, etc. Objectives: -To develop knowledges and skills only on qualitative aspects of a YE project, (not on how to fill an application form or others technicalities) ; -To equip the Youth Workers and the Youth leaders with insight in their role as support to the group ; -To give examples of tools, especially for the Youthpass, intercultural learnings, and to allow them to experiment; -To understand better meaning/philosophy of YE in the framework of Erasmus + ; -To develop new projects by including the reflections and learnings of the TC part. In the training course will be involved youth workers and their beneficiaries who are directly involved in the organisation and have experience implementing at least one local or international project. Who are willing to learn, share and develop new projects together with other participants. Total of 24 participants coming from 8 different countries: Belgium, Curaçao (Dutch Carribean), Spain, Portugal, Georgia, Ukraine, France (Réunion), and Monténégro. The training would consist mainly of 2 parts as a mix of training course and Partner building activity. The TC will be held in Georgia (Roustavi) from 10th to 15th of September 2018. The first to share practices and reflections around qualitative elements related to Youth Exchanges such as active participation, intercultural learning, strategy of evaluation measuring impacts,… Based on Non Formal Education, the mix between their own experiences, knowledges and small inputs identified as referent theories for YE in the framework of Erasmus + : Youth in Action. The second part would create new youth exchange projects among the participants, and begin to incorporate the results of the first day workshops for future projects following the implementation of an action plan. Methodology is based on Non-Formal Education and will be a mix of sharing expériences, thoughts, and questions from participants with some theory inputs and expérimentations of tools (Compass, T-Kit,...). Different level of impacts are expecting: On participants: - All the knowledge, skills and attitude changes resulting from TC aim to contribute to the improvement of the quality of future projects organised by participants; On participating organisations: - Creation and reinforcement of an associations network for development of new Youth Exchange or a Transnational Youth Initiative; - Other way to work for the youth worker and the youth association. Change of practices and reflections leading to a new definition of their objectives; - Better visibility and increased credibility with all the stakeholders as they worked on the meaning of their actions linked to the youth project exchange they are organising; On target groups: - Young people really at the initiative of the projects (local or international) and participating in shared decisions processes. This international training course is aimed at enabling youth workers to train their peers, colleagues and young people in their cities/towns to become volunteer guides for educational walking tours which aim to explore different realities of a place and to tell alternative stories about it.Specific objectives are: Support the involved organizations in creating educational walking tours that can introduce resident and visitors to relevant places and issues through first-hand contact and experience, in order to increase their knowledge and understanding of a certain places’ history, culture and current issues; train participants in becoming multipliers (training others in their communities and organizations) of educational walking tours methodology; create at least one itinerary of an educational walking route per partner organization.Beside ethnic divisions, another aspect we are aiming at exploring are urban phenomena whose relevance is increasing in all the involved cities: homelessness, forced evictions, gentrification, excessive construction and urbanization in spite of the environment, so that young people can get (an be involved in researching) a bigger picture of what is happening just a few blocks away from their homes and local media/mainstream narration do not cover enough. Finally, another aspect we want to give voice to with this project is the promotion of bottom-up, resilient practices of active citizenship and participation taking place in the involved cities: Permaculture gardens and urban gardens, solidarity initiatives, platforms supporting human rights or strengthening community ties, stories of individuals making the difference.Beside exploring the present, one important element of this project is the awareness of the past. Due to the recent history of many of the involved countries (Balkan wars are the most emblematic example), nowadays young people (especially those born in the early 2000’s) do not have the opportunity to learn about recent history, which is mainly absent from school books, a taboo for many families, manipulated by the governmental media. One of the many roles of youth workers and organizations in such contexts is to encourage young people to search for alternative interpretations from mainstream narrations as well as create their own opinion on the basis of information available to them and what they can actually research, learn, discover and find out.<< Implementation >>We implemented a 6-working days Training course in Novi Sad, between 4th and 11th October 2021.The training involved also two pilot walking tours held by locals (a third one was planned, but the organizers was infected with covid-19 and the tour was canceled). After that participants held follow-up training and info-sessions for their peers in their organizations/collectives as well as at least one pilot educational walking tour per participant and/or city in their home cities and countries: Berlin, Vienna, Pančevo, Prishtina, Novi Sad, Sarajevo, Mostar, Istanbul, Ankara, Tirana, Zagreb. Finally, a publication on educational walking tours to explore alternative realities was created using inputs and tools from the TC as well as from the participants' direct experiences and the routes they created in their cities. At the local level, beside follow-up sessions/training and pilot tours, participants also promoted the walking tours to their target groups (young people, youth workers, local citizens) both offline and online, through their CSOs and the CSOs they cooperate with at the local level, and the web.In the TC, participants were youth workers, active members and volunteers of civil society organizations coming from Serbia, Kosovo*, Albania, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Turkey, Germany and Austria.Participants to the TC were 21, distributed as follows, according to the agreement made with partners: Serbia: 6 participants, 2 staff members (1 trainer, 1 logistical manager), Kosovo* : 3 + 1 staff member (trainer), Germany: 2, Albania: 3, Croatia: 1, Bosnia and Herzegovina: 3, Austria: 1, Turkey: 2.The number greatly changed from the expected one due to the fact that the TC was largely delayed due to covid-19 and was implemented in a period when still many people were afraid of traveling, could not travel due to being infected/their families or friends being infected, and some of the partners had too many ongoing calls to send participants at all (the Slovenian and Montenegrian partner) or more participants than agreed (partners from Croatia, Austria), which was partially solved involving more participants from certain countries, ie. Albania, Kosovo* and Serbia. The group of participants was really diverse, in terms of age but also background: the participants from Kosovo*, Turkey, Albania, Germany, Croatia, two participants from Bosnia and Herzegovina and three from Serbia are volunteers in the partner organizations and/or other local CSOs, while the Austrian participant, two participants from Serbia and one from Bosnia and Herzegovina are professional youth workers and/or employed by the partner organizations or other CSOs.Two out of the Serbian participants are actually two international long-term volunteers who back then had just started their volunteering service at VCV.Two participants from Kosovo* and one participants from Turkey can be clearly defined as participants with fewer opportunities. The Turkish participants is a non-binary person (using the pronoun “they/them”) and member of a LGBT+ students’ collective and due to their identity they experience different forms of discrimination (which is also the reason behind their walking tour which is about welcoming LGBT+ students at Middle East Technical University). Two participants from Kosovo*, who are twin brothers, clearly have educational difficulties and can speak no foreign language, will not continue their education after high school and have very little personal and professional perspectives whatsoever, due to the fact that they are born and raised in a small town in Kosovo* in the aftermaths of the war, have no passport and never traveled, and have an extremely reduced cultural life, while being members of Young Active Gračanica seems to be among the few factors of protection. The diversity of the group was a challenge but also an asset: the younger participants were 18 while the oldest was 50 years old, and three participants had serious challenges with the English language (from Kosovo*,Turkey). The trainers made it possible for the diversities also in terms of background, opinions and identity, but also volunteering/professional backgrounds to become an asset through the implementation of activities where everyone could give their contribution, opinion, experience and which served as a preparation to understand different audiences of educational walking tours themselves. Moreover, participants brought their interests, skills, professions (we had a professional tourist guide, a marketing specialist, a permaculture designer, a licensed youth worker, a psychologist and charity worker..) which being so diverse but complementary when it came to the design of the tours made the process of creating the tours more complete and engaging. When it comes to the tours in their cities, participants were young people (most cases), young people and children (Turkey), youth workers (Austria), all interested locals (Serbia, Pančevo).<< Results >>The main outputs of the project are 10 different itineraries for educational walking tours in 10 different cities: Novi Sad, Gračanica, Istanbul, Ankara, Pančevo, Vrnjačka Banja, Sarajevo, Zagreb, Vienna, Tirana and Mostar as well as the final publication that can be used by youth workers to develop educational walking tours in their cities together with young people they work with. Most participants in the residential international training acquired competencies that enabled them to create educational walking tours that tell alternative stories of their communities as wellas train young people with whom they work to do the same. A minor part of participants (two from Kosovo*, one from Turkey) couldn’t acquire the above mentioned competencies as they came with a background which was less favorable than other participants’: for them, it was the first international experience and they firstly had to deal with linguistic challenges, cultural shock, fully understanding the extent to which their contribution/participation is expected, and then just later in the second half of the TC were able to attend fully, thanks to translations provided from and to Serbian, Turkish and English. For them, we can speak about the development of intercultural awareness, sense of initiative, higher understanding of diversity in the region/Europe as well as awareness in a variety of topics which are encompassed in the tours created by the other participants and which samples they could experience online during the TC, but their still limited awareness of their own local contexts is still too limited to create proper walking tours with an educational element.Participants to the one day trainings held by the participants in their local communities (their colleagues, fellow volunteers and activists) acquired basic knowledge about the concept of educational walking tours, could improve their attitude and understanding of the need to tell alternative stories in the frame of the specific context of their city as well as Europe; practical skills in guiding small groups of young people through the previously created routes, information about the partner organizations involved in the project as well as the variety of tours designed/organized by participants.Beside participants of the TC and their peers, the project also had an impact on the participants of their local walking tours which they implemented after the TC. The topics of the walking tours organized by participants in their communities were:Permaculture (Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina)Street art as a tool for social awareness (two different tours, Pančevo and Novi Sad, Serbia)Air pollution (Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina)Intercultural heritage (two different tours, Prishtina, Kosovo* and Istanbul,Turkey)History of queer presence and activism in Middle East Technical University (Ankara, Turkey)Public parks as spaces for youth work (Vienna, Austria))Meditation and de-stressing techniques in the forest (Berlin, Germany)Old villas transformed into modern spots (Tirana, Albania)Craftsmanship and low-waste lifestyles (Zagreb, Croatia)Participants to the walking tours were local young people, but also locals of any age and, in one case, youth and children in foster care, while the tour in Vienna was dedicated to local youth workers. All participants got acquainted with this methodology, the specific topic(s) of their walk as well as participated in the tours with locals they often hadn’t met before and with whom they had the chance to share talks about their cities, communities and the problems affecting them.Impact on the regional level is mainly represented by the participation of a big number of partners coming from the Western Balkans and countries neighbouring the Western Balkans, while the international impact of this project is mainly based on its visibility and dissemination: the guidelines which resulted as an output of this project are now available to organizations in the participating countries, Europe and beyond. Additionally, the fact that all partners are branches or contact points of the SCI movement makes the impact even stronger, as replication of this project within the SCI will be encouraged and the guidelines were shared with all 43 SCI branches and its many more members in Europe and worldwide.
