MAShES proposes a breakthrough approach to image-based laser processing closed-loop control. Firstly, a compact, snapshot, and multispectral imaging system in the VIS/MWIR spectral range will be developed. This approach will enable a multimodal process observation that combines different imaging modalities. Moreover, it will enable an accurate estimation of temperature spatially resolved and independent on emissivity values, even for non-grey bodies and dissimilar materials. Secondly, a fully embedded approach to real time (RT) control will be adopted for efficient processing of acquired data and high speed -multiple inputs/ multiple outputs- closed-loop control. Thirdly, a cognitive control system based on the use of machine learning techniques applied to process quality diagnosis and self-adjustment of the RT control will be developed. As a result, a unified and compact embedded solution for RT-control and high speed monitoring will be developed that brings into play: - The accurate measurement of temperature distribution, - The 3D seam profile and 2D melt pool geometry, - The surface texture dynamics, and process speed. MAShES control will act simultaneously on multiple process variables, including laser power and modulation, process speed, powder and gas flow, and spot size. MAShES will deal with usability and interoperability issues for compliance with cyber-physical operation of the system in a networked and cognitive factory. Moreover, standardisation issues will be addressed regarding the processes and the control system and contributions in this regard are envisaged. MAShES will be designed under a modular approach, easily customizable for different laser processing applications in highly dynamic manufacturing scenarios. Validation and demonstration of prototypes of MAShES system will be done for laser welding and laser metal deposition (LMD) in operational scenarios at representative end-user facilities.

The new emerging generation of microsystems represents a major opportunity for a substantial EU economic growth, in an industry counting already more than 200.000 workers and a turnover in 2019 of €450 billion. The Mesomorph concept provides the means to overcome the following 4 main hurdles: 1. The intrinsic physic of microsystems doesn’t allow the simple downsizing of conventional technologies to industrialize micromanufacturing processes. Mesomorphallows to limit the number of micromanipulation tasks by integrating an all-in-onemachine featuring novel processes for the direct creation of functions (electronic, fluidic, optic) directly on a substrate, with a RESOLUTION down to 300nm, by combining multi-material addition (Two-Photon Polymerization, Atomic Layer 3D nano printing) and subtraction (Femtolaser micro-ablation) in a self-contained white room. 2. Because of the intrinsic slowness of physical processes at microscale, productivity cannot be achieved by sequencing multiple single steps. Mesomorph proposes a scaleup throughput by PARALLELIZATION and batch processing UP TO 50k PARTS/YEAR, leveraging a new multiple micronozzles system to extend the SADALP working area from 10x10mm up to 500x500mm, and concurrently leveraging on the beam splitting technique of a high-power fs laser for ablation. 3. Microsystems cannot be conceived with subcomponents. Mesomorph includes a specific Design-to-Lifevalue Platform to guide the development of new microsystems by fully exploiting the new processes. 4. Innovation cannot be limited by the financial risk associated with the necessary investments. Mesomorph implements a new “Manufacturing as a Service” business model in which all the value chain’s actors can benefit from a positive net cash flow since production's start, effectively removing entry barriers for innovators. Mesomorph consortium is composed of 13 partners from 5 different countries. Each partner represents excellence in its own field.

Borealis project presents an advanced concept of machine for powder deposition additive manufacturing and ablation processes that integrates 5 AM technologies in a unique solution. The machine is characterized by a redundant structures constituted by a large portal and a small PKM enabling the covering of a large range of working cube and a pattern of ejective nozzles and hybrid laser source targeting a deposition rate of 2000cm3/h with 30 sec set-up times. The machine is enriched with a software infrastructure which enable a persistent monitoring and in line adaptation of the process with zero scraps along with number of energy and resource efficiency optimization policies and harvesting systems which make the proposed solution the less environmental invasive in the current market. Borealis idea results from a consortium composed by the excellence of developers of worldwide recognized laser machines and advanced material processing together with the highly precision and flexible mechatronic designers. These two big clusters decided to join their expertise and focus on new manufacturing challenges coming from complex product machining in the field of aerospace, medtech and automotive represented by major partners in the market. Borealis project targets a TRL 6 and will provide as outcome of three years work two complete Borealis machine in two dimensions – a lab scale machine and a full size machine – which are foreseen to be translated into industrial solution by 2019.

Advances in optoelectronics technologies is causing a revolution in consumer electronic goods, solar energy, communications, LED, industrial laser, and other fields. At present, the optoelectrical manufacturing is facing significant challenges in dealing with the evolution of the equipment, instrumentation and manufacturing processes they support. The industry is striving for higher customisation and individualisation, implying that systems configurations need to change more frequently and dynamically. IQONIC will offer a scalable zero defect manufacturing platform covering the overall process chain of optoelectrical parts. IQONIC covers the design of new optoelectrical components and their optimised process chain, their assembly process, as well as their disassembly and reintroduction into the value chain. IQONIC will therefore comprise new hardware and software components interfaced with the current facilities through internet of things and data-management platforms, while being orchestrated through eight (8) scalable strategies at component, work-station and shopfloor level. The IQONIC technologies will be demonstrated in 4 demo sites covering a wide range of products and processes. The impact of IQONIC to the European optoelectronics manufacturing industry, but also the society itself, can be summarised in the following (with a horizon of 4 years after project ends): (i) increase of the in-service efficiency by 22%, (ii) increased flexibility with 16% faster reconfiguration times, (iii) 10% reduction in production costs through recycled components and materials, (iv) improved designs for assembly and disassembly and, (v) about 400 new jobs created and (vi) over 39 MEUR ROI for the consortium. To do that we have brought together a total of seventeen (17) EU-based partners, representing both industry and academia, having ample experience in cutting-edge technologies and active presence in the EU photonics and manufacturing.
