10.2 Summary in English for general dissemination purposes “PRAXIS–Centro de Filosofia Política e Cultura” is a practical philosophy unit that carries out philosophical fundamental and applied research in ethics, political philosophy, philosophy of culture and contemporary philosophy, particularly phenomenology. In the field of ethics, the PRAXIS team researches questions of practical rationality, moral motivation for action, universalism and responsibility. Particular attention is given to virtue ethics and existential ethics, both focused on answering the socratic question “how should we live?”. In applied ethics, research deals with ethical questions that arise in the fields of politics, communication (journalism and organisational communication), the environment and technology. Ethical problems emerging from the use of algorithms in programming machines and everyday life, as well as bioethical issues, are also researched. In the field of political and social philosophy, involving the work of both philosophers and political scientists, part of the research will be theoretical and part will be applied, with plans to intersect conceptual research with empirical case studies. On the more theoretical side, research will deal with the political thought of classical, modern and contemporary philosophers. On the applied side, the research intersects philosophical reflection on theories of democracy with an empirical approach to the “quality of democracy”. In the area of social philosophy, the research object will be the relationships between individual, society and economics. One important focus is on the category of work, with the goals of questioning the connection between work and receiving an income, as well as the extension and application of distributive justice to work, looking towards a “post-growth” society. Research on politics includes a project on “Human rights and migration”. Based on theoretical, ethical and political debate between the “foundationist” and political or “functionalist” approaches of human rights, the project aims to further ethical and political approaches to the issue and rethink the relationship between migration, poverty and climate change, taking into account the human right to freedom of movement and to a life with dignity in a preserved natural world. In the field of phenomenology, the research includes a phenomenological approach to ethical issues, particularly moral motivation, and an analysis of our technological lifeworld, seen from the standpoint of the affective dispositions of our experience of being-in-the-world. On the applied side, understanding modes of failed existence will be considered in connection with “phenomenological-existential” therapeutic treatments. The PRAXIS Centre also performs research on philosophy of culture and dedicates particular attention to the question of “religion and violence”. The latter case reflects the relationship between appropriations of sacred “founding texts” and their repercussions for today's political and social events. 10.3 Summary in English for evaluation PRAXIS – Centro de Filosofia Política e Cultura is a practical philosophy unit that performs philosophical research in 5 fields with connections among them: A) Ethics, B) Political philosophy, C) Philosophy of culture, D) Phenomenology and therapy, E) Religion and violence. Each of these fields contains a fundamental theoretical reflection component and an applied or empirical component. Objectives are defined and projects are implemented in each field. A) In the field of ethics, there will be work on theoretical ethics and applied ethics. On the more theoretical side, based on the results obtained, work will pursue practical rationality, decision-making and moral motivation for action in virtue ethics and existential ethics. Important theoretical research will involve delving further into some ethical questions relevant to applied ethics, particularly the question of individual and collective “responsibility” as well as the issue of “universalism” vs. particularism, an important matter for considering human rights and the relationship between ethics and politics. The applied ethics component will include research on ethical issues posed in the areas of politics, communication, technology and biomedical sciences. In communication ethics, research will be carried out on the ethics of journalism, ethics applied to institutional communication, with a project dedicated to the ethics of governmental communication, the aim of which is to put into action concepts and instruments to assess the ethics of public communication practices used by governing authorities and those in charge of public bodies. B) In the field of political philosophy, part of the theoretical research will be intersected with empirical case studies carried out by political scientists. There will be 5 lines or projects in this field: 1) The more theoretical component will develop work on the political thought of classical and contemporary authors. 2) Also on the theoretical side, case studies will be developed on philosophy and theory of democracy, specifically a collective study on “Philosophies of democracy, from Aristotle to nowadays”. 3) On a theoretical and practical level, a project will be carried out involving philosophers and political scientists, in which a philosophical reflection on theories and conceptions of democracy intersects with an empirical analysis of what is called the “quality of democracy”. The project’s aim will be to question the criteria used to empirically evaluate the quality of democracies regarding their epistemological, normative and political premises. 4) In the domain of social philosophy, the object of research will be relationships between individual, society and economy. The essential object of research will deal with the category of work, with the aims of: first, questioning the connection between work and receiving an income, within a philosophical grounding for an unconditional basic income, and second to think about broadening distributive justice to work in a post-growth society. 5) We have included a three-year project on “Human rights and migration” in the politics field. Based on theoretical, ethical and political debate between the “foundationist” and political or “functionalist” approaches of human rights, the project aims to: i) survey the different ethical and political approaches to the issue; ii) rethink the relationship between migration, poverty and climate change based on respect for human rights to freedom of movement, to a life with dignity and a healthy environment; iii) demonstrate the inefficiency and injustice of the current international refugee system. C) In the field of philosophy of culture, three research objectives have been set. The more theoretical objective aims to explain and question the concept of culture based on cultural theories developed by classical and contemporary philosophers (Cassirer, Simmel). There will then be a reflection on philosophical thought in Portuguese, including not only philosophers but also essayists. D) In the field of phenomenology and therapy, research will go in three directions: 1) The phenomenological approach to ethical issues, particularly moral motivation. 2) The phenomenological approach to ways of life in our technological world, through an analysis of symbolic forms (Cassiorer), the culturally determining prestructures of understanding and affective dispositions in our experience of being-in-the-world. 3) Application of the phenomenological perspective to understanding pathological behaviours and to “phenomenological-existential” therapies. E) In the “Religion and violence” issue, the aim is to use founding “sacred texts”, their later interpretations and appropriations, secondary critical studies and today’s social and political events to reflect upon and question the causal relationships between them and the processes of (de)legitimation of various forms of violence, from physical coercion to symbolic violence. Taking into account approaches and contributions from social and human sciences and philosophy, studies will be carried out on the following topics: “Religion, images/mediatisation, violence”, “Religion, humour and violence”, “Religion, violence and politics”. – CONFERENCES, PUBLICATIONS: National and international conferences and seminars are planned to be held at the unit’s sites in all five research fields, and researchers will participate in (external) national and international conferences. Individual and collective articles and books will be published in the five fields. – Internationalisation and cooperation with other units: There is extensive exchange and cooperation in all 5 research fields with practical or contemporary research groups and units in France, Spain, Belgium and Brazil. Cooperation agreements have been signed with two research groups at Brazilian universities, with one French unit and groups at two Portuguese units.
