It aims to upgrade and employ the app within an EU-wide awareness campaign. The app will be part of an ecosystem of tools and activities to be co-created by stakeholders in three pilot sites and upscaled in two replication sites in Europe to raise awareness for responsible consumption of sea, freshwater and aquaculture products. Co-creation will inform content development, enriching scientific input with socio-cultural and economic considerations and engaging stakeholders throughout the seafood value chain. The upgraded app will offer outputs such as individualised decision trees, information about health benefits, tips and tricks to fight food waste, recipes, and good practices. It will be available in all EU official languages, and it will take into account all major EU sea basins and inland waters. The awareness campaign will involve social and traditional media, a package of material and activities, and a call for multipliers with a local focus via our pilot and replication sites, as well as EU-wide dissemination activities. The campaign will relate to other European initiatives such as #TasteTheOcea and it will engage adults and the youth via educational activities for promoting the app as a guiding light for consumption behaviour change. The existing labelling process will be upscaled to display European providers of sustainable seafood and support the sustainability of the business model of Mr.Goodfish3.0. Consortium partners display a mix of science centres/aquariums and communicators, research institutions, and European-wide organizations. Their expertise and networks in terms of scientific input and content development, co-creation processes, app development, design and implementation of outreach campaigns and science engagement will be fully exploited to promote sustainable seafood consumption.

The project will build on the following principles: - Collective and truly European - mobilising organisations from each EU RSAs to prepare activities and events for presenting their own research/scientific activities. - Interdisciplinary/multidisciplinary/transdisciplinary - the partner organisations from different EU MS will represent a diversity of disciplinary fields and research skills/experiences that are focusing on the ocean, and on the complex connections between human activities and ocean ecosystems. - Immersive, inclusive and interconnected - by combining: (a) an interactive and practical experiences on the spot (in each of the partners location) building on doing, touching, gaming, trying, exploring; (b) an interactive virtual experience, by way of an innovative virtual reality technology, that will allow the public to explore both the ocean and researchers activities by simulating real life working conditons.

Marine and Maritime Research has a critical role to play in developing our understanding of the seas and advance technology so that we can develop their economic potential in a sustainable manner. The COLUMBUS project intends to capitalise on the EC’s significant research by ensuring accessibility and uptake of research Knowledge Outputs by end-users (policy, industry, science and wider society). COLUMBUS will ensure measurable value creation from research investments contributing to sustainable Blue Growth within the timeframe of the project. Adopting proven methodologies and building on significant past work, COLUMBUS will first identify end-user needs and priorities. It will then set about identifying and collecting “Knowledge Outputs” from past and current EC projects. Rigorous analysis will take place to identify specific applications and end-users. Transfer will be achieved and measured through tailor-made knowledge transfer. All knowledge collected will be made accessible the pre-existing Marine Knowledge Gate. To achieve the above, COLUMBUS has brought together a multi-disciplinary, multi-stakeholder team representing all aspects of the research value chain from funding agencies to end-users. Key strategic initiatives and networks further strengthen and provide a strong vehicle for project legacy. A network of 9 Competence Nodes, each with a “Knowledge Fellow” and support team across Europe will provide the necessary critical mass (470pm of effort) to ensure full thematic and spatial coverage. COLUMBUS will also carry out strategic actions to enhance the visibility and impact of research to stakeholders and European Citizen’s. Furthermore working with funding agencies and stakeholders, COLUMBUS will examine the feasibility of improved systems and processes to ensure measurable value creation from research.

In particular, the project will establish, curate and experiment a Responsible Research and Innovation platform involving societal actors working together during the whole research and innovation process for aligning better both the process and its outcomes, with the values, needs and expectations of European society, integrating citizens visions, needs and desires into science and innovation, promoting RRI with focus on marine issues and pressures that have important effects on the European societies. The project activities and outcomes, even if connected with marine research field, will define this systematic approach in order to make it transferable and reproducible for any RRI thematic domain. All project results and activities will be extrapolated from the RRI marine field to general RRI and broadly disseminated. The expected outcome of the Work Programme is a clear improvement of the integration of society in science and innovation. The MARINA project will follow this strategic line of “strengthening and facilitating” the capacity of the research and innovation to align and integrate the social needs through a suitable knowledge sharing platform and federating activities.
