ROSEWOOD is designed to develop regional networks that will connect actors of the wood mobilization value-chain from forest owners to relevant regional authorities but also forestry industry to cover and find answers to the main challenges in the field, especially the sustainability of the wood mobilization. Through the sharing of technological and non-technological innovations, best practice cases and RDI results, this multi-actor approach will close knowledge gaps and create new opportunities for economic partnerships between stakeholders and (inter)regional authorities. ROSEWOOD‘s focus on the transfer of know-how and information will enable and support foresters and regional authorities to exploit innovations and best-practices and facilitate the capture of grass root ideas for forestry development. ROSEWOOD will also provide practitioners with development skills (educational and entrepreneurial) and facilitate organizational innovations leading to novel exploitation chains through the development of a coaching methodology facilitating the uptake of new ideas and best practices. In addition, ROSEWOOD will explore the possible synergies between R&I investment and European Structural and Investment Funds to support the uptake of innovations within the value chain. These actions will contribute to an economically viable and sustainable development in forestry and in rural areas towards the enhancement of an EU Bioeconomy. ROSEWOOD‘s co-ordination and support actions will be implemented via Wood Mobilization Regional Hubs located within 4 communities across Europe providing greater opportunities for forestry to align its activities with local and regional development plans.

In recent years, the castane-farming sector has evolved considerably, moving from essentially family food production to processed and marketed production. However, in Europe, there is a strong demand from the food-processing industries, but regional production does not cover its needs. This increased demand is due to the change in the dietary behaviour of consumers who are looking for gluten-free flours, natural and healthy products. This mismatch between supply and demand makes it possible to envisage a potential for development that would create profitable outlets and jobs. However, the chestnut sector is an agricultural sector in difficulty and in decline. In view of this reality, the CASTANA project aims to set up a programme of formative exchanges between actors of the sector at the European level in order to consolidate a sector in difficulty but rich in job potential and collectively create a European chestnut cluster. The project concerns technicians, trainers, producers, marketers in the chestnut sector, and people looking for employment or complementary activities or farmers, breeders wishing to open up to pluriactivity. The project is an exchange of good practices in this framework. Over 24 months, we foresee 4 mobilities on 4 well-worked themes- Castana Métier/formation mobility dedicated to the development of professionalizing resources in order to match training supply and demand. To upgrade the skills of the participants (arboriculturists, farmers, young people and unemployed people) and train them in the profession of castana farmer.- Castana Strategy, Development of collective strategies to support employment development in the sector- Castana Innovation and the circular economy - Work on the organization of a circular economy and innovation paths with regard to new consumer trends.- Castana Alliance - Strengthening the European network for enhanced cooperation by creating a European clusterThese 4 mobilities will give rise to the emergence of a European cluster and pedagogical tutorials available on a youtube channel as well as on the partners' websites and other social networks. 3 transnational meetings are planned to follow the project and its good evolution, including a meeting with members of the European Commission and European elected representatives in Brussels.Methodology and resultsAt the end of the project, the European chestnut sector is strengthened. The training tools (acts of the mobility sessions), the training tutorials lay the foundations of a prospective work. It is planned to continue the work on 2 European programmes: KA2 Erasmus strategic partnership Innovation and on line L-1144 of the Chafea programme (EU).An analysis on the circular economy and a cycle of recovery of lost products is proposed on each territory as well as a collection of innovative practices.Ultimately, the expected impact concerns the consolidation of jobs through training, the emergence of new bean farmers and the creation of a European cluster.

SUPERB pursues the overall goal to create a lasting enabling environment for transformative change towards large-scale forest and forest landscape restoration, which empowers decision makers to take just and informed decisions for restoration of biodiversity, ecosystem services and carbon sequestration in a manner that minimises region specific trade-offs and maximises synergies between ecosystem services. SUPERB develops and synthesises a multidisciplinary, practical, and scientific restoration knowledge basis and makes it publicly available. In 12 large-scale demonstrators across Europe, we will showcase best practices responding to key forest restoration and adaptation challenges on some hundreds of hectares per demo and with the potential for immediate upscaling to over one million hectares in 10-15 years. For large scale restoration to be successful, many actors from different sectors and disciplines must behave synergistically and in a mutually reinforcing way. We will speed up transformative change and further upscaling through innovative stakeholder involvement across scales to ensure the favorability and uptake of the proposed approaches. A comprehensive multi-language online Forest Ecosystem Restoration Gateway will guide stakeholders to find answers to their restoration questions, advise them on how to deal with barriers and enablers and provide access to easily applicable and comprehensible tools and materials that support restoration, e.g., best practices for forest restoration or the development of scalability plans, a tree species selection application, an innovative funding guide, and much more. The Gateway will also host a restoration Marketplace, where market agents, e.g. potential funders and landowners, can agree on bids for restoration projects. SUPERB will boost and measure its impact through its extensive and systematically enlarged stakeholder communities and networks, to ensure the relevance of the project outputs and their positive uptake.

Innovation is a key priority for the private forestry(F) and agroforestry (AF) sector, and nationally/locally funded EIP-AGRI Operational Groups (OGs) can play a key role in driving innovation at the EU level. However, the results of the OGs in F and AF have not been disseminated to all EU countries because the various local/national OGs have not been linked to the experiences of other countries and the knowledge generated has only been shared locally. In order to disseminate the knowledge generated by the OGs in F and AF to all EU regions, FOREST4EU will set up multi-actor innovation interregional transversal Hubs dealing with 5 innovation topics ('Wood mobilisation', 'Forest adaptation to climate change', 'Improving approaches, models and tools for sustainable forest management and ecosystem service provision to improve economic, environmental and social benefits for rural areas', 'non-wood forest products', 'Agroforestry') to facilitate interregional transfer of knowledge generated by the OGs. FOREST4EU will collect, share and disseminate knowledge related to innovations from F and AF OGs. This will be done by providing tailored and understandable dissemination materials accessible through existing platforms, as well as capacity building materials developed according to identified regional needs and transferred to where the innovation can be applied. FOREST4EU will also discuss and present the benefits of OGs relevant to the Green Deal to EU policy makers. In addition, FOREST4EU will establish connections with policy makers working with CAP and innovation at the local level, particularly in countries where OGs dealing with F and AF are not funded, to promote new initiatives and a greater geographic balance between different EU regions.

FARCLIMATE will address the critical challenges of developing and expanding climate-resilient measures, making them available and understandable to everyone, while also paying special attention to the social, political and economic barriers that are commonly found. FARCLIMATE actions will be implemented in at least 20 regions and communities in Europe, i.e., case studies where we will address transformative solutions on the path to climate resilience. In order to achieve such a great challenge, FARCLIMATE has set the following work program: 1) Initial work on engaging with all relevant stakeholders in each region, setting governance management mechanism; 2) Establishment of living labs to perform co-creation, testing, experimenting and scaling-up innovative activities in real-life environments; 3) A deep research of the main value chains, of the socioeconomic and environmental characteristics and of the existing economic sectors, through indicators to be monitored, of all investigated regions and communities; 4) Establishment of the transversal actions to be performed in all case studies: tailor-made training activities for communities empowerment, targeting different types of stakeholders and based among climate change and related hazards and risks; 5) The implementation of technical but also socially feasible innovative solutions in the agriculture, forestry and fisheries economic sectors, with specific solutions to increase their capacity to adapt to climate change impacts on their fields. Nature-based solutions will be the guiding thread in FARCLIMATE innovative actions; 6) The creation of different tools to spread the obtained learnings, found barriers, and successful results, among others, during FARCLIMATE, such as policy recommendations, guidelines, management plans and the innovative Transformation Hub.
