Science Advice for Policy by European Academies (SAPEA) is part of the Scientific Advice Mechanism to the European Commission, which provides independent scientific evidence and policy recommendations to the European institutions by request of the College of Commissioners. SAPEAs role is to provide independent, high-quality evidence reviews to inform policy recommendations made by the Group of Chief Scientific Advisors. To achieve this, SAPEA assembles interdisciplinary working groups of scientific experts, supported by systematic literature reviews. SAPEA is a consortium of the six European Academy Networks Academia Europaea, ALLEA, EASAC, Euro-CASE, FEAM, YASAS that bring together some 120 academies from over 40 countries across Europe. The academies fellows have expertise in a diverse range of fields, including natural sciences, engineering, technology, medicine and health, agricultural and social sciences, and humanities. SAPEA follows a comprehensive EDI strategy incorporating experts from all relevant scientific fields of the scientific community, focussing on integrating at least 10% early-career and 30% mid-career researchers, achieving gender balance and ensuring wide geographical representation from across Europe. SAPEA works to raise awareness of the SAMs activities, and to improve the quality of public debate about the role of evidence in policy, contributing to the transparency of EU policymaking. SAPEA engages with policymakers, the scientific community, stakeholders and the wider public in a range of D&E&C activities, including websites, social media, events, media relations, and a range of publications. The project 'Science Advice for Policy by European Academies' (SAPEA) is part of the Scientific Advice Mechanism of the European Commission. At the request of the EC, it provides targeted scientific evidence in a timely and transparent manner to inform the production of science advice by the Group of Chief Scientific Advisors while ensuring the highest scientific quality, developed by complete and independent evidence analysis and synthesis. SAPEA comprises five European Academy Networks: Academia Europaea, ALLEA, Euro-CASE, FEAM and YASAS. It contributes to widening participation by mobilising its network of some 110 academies from more than 40 countries across Europe, each with hundreds of Fellows. SAPEA aims to strengthen the links between European science academies and to ensure their active participation in its activities. SAPEA assembles interdisciplinary working groups of scientific experts. The working groups produce Evidence Review Reports or other scientific inputs for the Chief Scientific Advisors. The process is supported by Systematic Literature Reviews. SAPEA aims to ensure wide geographical coverage including Widening Countries and gender diversity, coverage of all relevant scientific fields and interdisciplinarity in the process, as well as an open and inclusive approach to involve experts who are not Academy Fellows, and early and mid-career researchers. Experts contribute on a voluntary basis. SAPEA organises an inclusive dialogue about major societal challenges via a series of events, social media and further D&E&C activities to communicate the project’s results and the work of the Group of Chief Scientific Advisors, engaging with the scientific community, policy-makers, stakeholders and the wider public. These activities contribute to increasing awareness of the significance of science advice for policy and to improving transparency of the EU policy-making process. More information can be found on the project´s website: www.sapea.info.

The CALIPER project aims at driving a structural change process and implementing Gender Equality Plans in 7 Research Performing and 2 Research Funding organizations, involving the highest and middle management levels since the beginning to impact the whole institution. The project goal is to make research organizations more gender equal by increasing the number of female researchers in STEM, improving their careers prospects and integrating a gender dimension in research. CALIPER is featured by a broad geographic focus and an innovative approach based on engaging national and regional innovation ecosystems in the partners’ countries with a quadruple helix approach: the project will trigger and make internal changes and gender equality policies sustainable by orchestrating the core inward auditing/internal assessment and GEPs design with outward actions engaging external stakeholders to activate synergies at all different junctions of the ‘education-research- transfer to market of STEM research results’ chain. CALIPER will adopt an intersectional approach to gender equality issues, paying attention to the ways gender inequalities are linked to and intersected with other discriminations. CALIPER will ensure its successful implementation by adopting a holistic methodology featured by capacity building support to build and sustain internal gender knowledge and expertise, mutual learning among partners, a participatory co-design of GEPs as well as 2 iteration levels for implementing and refining GEPs and a thorough monitoring and evaluation mechanism, leading to durable institutional changes. Thanks to the presence of a pan- European Professional association in the consortium and further dissemination actions such as the Caliper Charter and Code and awareness raising sessions on gender in research open to external stakeholders and other RPOs/RFOs , Caliper results have strong potentials to be multiplied both nationally and in other EU28 countries.
