It brought together 25 young people/ youth workers actively involved in different youth organizations from across Europe eager to gain new knowledge about contributing to the needs of their communities from the local to the European level. This project provided them with the opportunity to: - reflect on and exchange stories, achievements, struggles and opinions regarding the role of social change agents - develop competences in political literacy, social change, participation, active citizenship, social and democratic values and critical thinking - get hands-on experience by interacting with international and local NGOs, politicians, and civil society activists in workshops, field visit, debate, and an NGO market - the design thinking of ideas for initiatives for promoting a more participatory culture on different levels both local and international ""Patterns of Activism” was the foundation of a larger educational cycle which was implemented by IYNF in 2019. It was followed by a training on project & organizational management and a conference where the outcomes achieved by the participants were presented. Three trainers delivered a non-formal education methodology, complemented by an expert session, an NGO market, field visits to local initiatives, and a debate with local political actors in Riga. The program was divided into three main parts: 1. Social and Political Activism: provided knowledge about social and civic movements, complemented with discussions and exercises aiming to reflect on democracy, decision-making, participation, freedom and equality. The participants also discussed political and participation trends, and tools used in populism, nationalism and Euroscepticism. 2. Critical Thinking: participants took part in simulations, debates and exercises about critical thinking as well as in expert sessions to increase their political and media literacy. They also had an opportunity to engage in a debate with local key actors about the connection between local politics and the EU, also discussing the topic of EU parliamentary elections of 2019 and youth participation in elections. 3. Self-Initiative: design thinking methods helped participants to bring up challenges and potentials of their local realities for a better understanding of community needs. Field visits to local initiatives and institutions and meeting with local actors and activists in Riga gave participants a hands-on experience of good urban development and participatory culture through multidisciplinary cooperation. Last, the participants created project ideas to be developed further in the second activity of the educational cycle. Next to this, the outcomes and action plans of the participants had a direct impact on the local communities as some of the participants started to take action immediately and became active citizens in their local communities. The results, especially of the whole project cycle, in the end, had a big impact on local, national and international communities. The projects that were developed in the Actions Plans were implemented on different levels and therefore had an impact on different levels. During a conference at the end of 2019, they presented their outcomes and ideas towards NGO and political stakeholders. They were discussing the topic of activism with these stakeholders based on the knowledge they got from this activity and reached out to a wider audience. Furthermore, the outcome (video) of this activity was spread through the Naturefriends Network and beyond (public on Facebook) to also give young people that didn’t participate the chance to get a glimpse into the topic. The project produced two videos: the first one is the panel debate and the second one is filming of different sessions with flash interviews of participants and local activists. In the design thinking sessions, the participants learned how to develop ideas of initiatives which could be implemented throughout the next projects and were brought to the second activity of the educational cycle for further development."

Although recent developments in the field of NGO’s have increased professions and professionalism in this area of work, volunteers remain the basis of a lot of projects and initiatives in various areas of the society. Nevertheless, rarely any of those organisations has approached volunteers and their work systematically, and with knowledge and practice of volunteer management. This has resulted in burnout of many volunteers, dissatisfaction and loss of belief in the values of the volunteerism among some volunteers. Voluntary work on itself is in constant evolution and the last years have brought in new challenges for organisations to attract and moreover to keep volunteers involved in the activities on short and long-term basis. In addition to such “regular” problems with volunteer management, the volunteers working with specific groups of beneficiaries with fewer opportunities (like refugees; persons with special needs, etc.) are more likely to experience exhaustion and burnout, because the work with such population is stressful and demands huge emotional involvement of volunteers and thus burnouts are more likely to happen. All the organisations involved in the project were organisations that base their work on volunteers’ engagement, exchange and local volunteer service. We have noticed that lately quite a few volunteers got burnout and felt overwhelmed. Thus, this project now. The main aim of this training course was to develop youth workers’ / participants’ competences in sustainable and holistic work (management, supervising and mentoring) with volunteers that are engaged within our activities with marginalised groups, thus improving volunteering for inclusion at local and national levels in the countries involved. Objectives: - Exchange realities and practices from different countries on insights and perceptions about youth work and volunteering programmes with marginalised groups - Motivate participants to and empower them for active promotion of combating social exclusion in their projects - To provide opportunity to improve skills and knowledge on step-by-step development and implementing of the volunteering programmes for inclusion within our organisations - To empower participants to act as effective volunteer managers, supervisors and mentors of the volunteers working with marginalised groups, and for the benefit of youngsters our beneficiaries and the local communities - Introducing the E+-YiA, its connection with volunteering in general and the possibilities it can offer through different projects to our volunteers / beneficiaries - Developing new projects and future European level cooperation among partners with the aim to raise quality of volunteers’ satisfaction and progress, volunteer programmes and volunteer management in our organisations. The core activity of the project was – 8 days long TC. It was organised in Selce, from 10th till 18th October 2017. Project gathered 25 participants, trainers and staff from 8 organisations and countries (HR, MK, SK, CZ, PL, TR, IT, GR). Project involved 11 out of 25 people with fewer opportunities. The training course was based on the approach and principles of non-formal education and was designed as an open learning process based on participants’ experience and exchange. A combination of different creative, participatory and interactive methods was used and designed upon the profile of participants. All partners will be involved in preparation, implementation and evaluation and follow-up phase and activities during the project, while the preparation team of trainers, facilitators and staff will be comprised of experienced youth trainers and youth workers from applicant and partners from Croatia and FYR Macedonia, expect partners from Bulgaria, who were preparing participants, but unfortunately they canceled. As a result of this training course youth workers acquired more practical as well as theoretical tools and skills to better involve volunteers in their activities. They learned and improved their skills in teamwork, management of staff and volunteers, assessing needs and capacities, development, evaluation and follow-up processes. Also youth workers developed new projects for involving volunteers and young people in their activities. As a result of the project on local level, more unemployed and other youth were involved in local activities of our partners. In longer term, this will result with increase of quality programmes and activities with marginalised groups and better inclusion and acceptance in society, on local and European level.

Starting from improving general sensitivity towards social issues and opportunities for change in their communities in both narrower and broader sense in the “Patterns of Activism” phase, the currently proposed project will bring together 24 young people/youth workers from different Naturefriends (and associated) organizations from across Europe to learn how to practically implement their project ideas reacting on the needs of their communities. The practical and project-oriented dimension will be brought into the mix of competences needed for a successful project. In a longer run, IYNF wishes to contribute to the development of resilient and strong society consisting of active people who are able to take initiative and help their communities instead of passively consuming and delegating full responsibility for the state of the society on their political representatives. We believe that improving the competences of young people with the potential for social change (which is a common characteristics of young Naturefriends) is the most natural step towards achieving that goal. Activism is an important feature of the Naturefriends movement for more than 120 years. The capacities and experience vary a lot throughout the European network, but a good potential for a fruitful exchange and capacity building is guaranteed. The “Structures of Activism” will provide its participants and their sending organizations with knowledge and practice in the field of international project management and implementation, so their awareness built in the previous instalment of the educational cycle is grounded and framed by actual knowledge and skills. More specifically, the participants will get chance to: - gain knowledge and skills in the field of project management and all its phases of implementation (planning, implementation, evaluation and presentation of results)- gain skills in financial management and fundraising, having also the knowledge of concrete grant schemes that can be applied for - gain competence in the HR management (leadership, tools for group work, facilitation of group processes, fostering motivation)- get the opportunity to continue with developing their project ideas into a more concrete form, based on the practical inputs received during the training, and to reflect on the long-term process- use the collective power of the team for facilitating the development of their projects, to find opportunities for mutual cooperation on particular projects among the participants The learning process will be carried out through three thematic blocks. First one will focus on the technical part of project management, exploring the fields of financial management, fundraising and general project implementation. In the second block, the participants will get familiar with the promotional and HR aspect of producing a project, learning and practicing way of promoting their projects (with focus on social media and online tools) and also being trained in competences focused on leadership, working in groups and effective communication. The last block will focus on using the collective knowledge gained through the previous days in actual practice, elaborating on concrete project ideas through a Hackathon method, making the participants leave with a very concrete picture of their projects and how those can be supported by IYNF and partner organizations, with implementation phase of those project immediately following after the “Structures” training. Informational sessions on competence development and how it can be facilitated by the YouthPass tool will be part of the programme as well. The learning process stands as a goal by itself. “Structures” is a part of a broader educational cycle, which pursues further goals, ultimately bringing at least 15 participants of the cycle to develop their own independent projects on a local, national or international level, bringing to life 5 such projects European-wide, accompanied by full documentation and results, which will be presented on the final conference of the year in Brussels in November 2019 in order to showcase effective ways of work towards a positive change, inspiring action and empowering youth to organize itself. Following Erasmus+ objectives in the field of youth will be addressed: improving the level of key competences and skills of young people, promoting participation in democratic life in Europe, active citizenship, social inclusion and solidarity, enhancing the international dimension of youth activities and helping the organizations to be a successful support structure for young people in complementarity with the European Union's external action.<< Activities >>The project “Structures of Activism” consists of one international activity, so the context and the objectives of the project and of the activity are the same. The project will stand as an important part of the entire “Flow of Activism” cycle, putting emphasis on the practical skills and knowledge the participants of the cycle will need in order to become effective change-makers. The international activity will take place from 23rd to 29th June 2019 in Penéstin, a town in Bretagne, France, in a Naturefriendhouse Le Loguy (managed by the local association of the NF Nantes Grand Large). It will provide 24 young people/youth workers with tools for increasing their competence in the practical aspects of activism and political and civic participation. It will use NFE methods in the field of project management, financial management, team leadership and other practicalities naturally stemming out when the practical steps in civic participation and project planning and implementation are being taken. The aim is to equip the participants with sufficient and complex set of competence in project management, while providing a hands-on approach to help transform the presumably at this stage rather blur project ideas into concrete plans and actions by the end of the activity. “Structures of Activism” is, as well as the preceding project “Patterns”, aiming at reaching out to youth workers, young leaders and volunteers from and beyond the Naturefriends network, who are (willing to become) active in youth participation and interested in developing initiatives in their communities. Given the continuity that we are striving to reach within this project, we are aiming at having a substantial part of the participants already involved in preliminary work on project ideas stemming from the results of the previous project, “Patterns of Activism”. 50% of the participants of the “Patterns” training are set as a goal to continue into “Structures” with well underlaid expectation to reach about 70%. It is expected that the newcomers will enrich the group of the participants with new insights and ideas for further development of the designed projects. The participants who will get accepted for the “Structures of Activism” project will need to fulfill the following profile: They have taken part in the “Patterns of Activism” project and (or, in case of being newcomers) have a project idea for further development during the “Structures” activity. Bringing a concrete project idea is mandatory; In case of not taking part in the first project, they will have a sufficient background in social activism and active citizenship and a record of some project initiatives they took part in;The quality and elaboration of the project idea will be assessed with utmost priority. The participants will have to provide a detailed description of their plan in the application form; They will be ideally direct representatives of the sending organizations or in close contact with them. They will be youth workers, social workers or active young people motivated to take an active part in the process of social change; They will be motivated to continue in the development of active citizenship competences and learn more about practical aspects of project management, financial management, PR, leadership and working with people and teams in general; They will prove willingness to continue in the development of national and international projects & activities addressing the particular issues and enhancing civic participation in their communitiesThe group of participants will consist of representatives from the organizations which will be direct partners in the grant application. IYNF expects to bring together participants from organizations working with diverse targets, including school children, students in higher education and in vocational training, youth not in education, employment or training, minorities or other socially-disadvantaged groups, municipalities and trade unions. 12 organizations are involved in the project: International Young Naturefriends (based in Czech Republic), ATB (Belgium), Asociación Biodiversa (Spain), FCAT (Poland), GIAN-Gio (Italy), SPPMD (Macedonia), NFJD (Germany), NF Steiermark (Austria), UTAN (France), TFSz (Hungary), Radi Vidi Pats (Latvia) and UNITED against racism (Hungary). << Impact >>The participants of the training are perceived by IYNF as its primary target group as well as the most efficient dissemination tool, being the main carriers of the cascade effect presumed by the setup of the project and the “Flow of Activism” context. The impact on the participants will be represented by the educational achievements, most importantly by by the shift forward in their competences in the areas of project management in all its phases, financial management, fundraising, PR, online tools for group work and project management (digital competences), networking, facilitation of group processes, leadership, communication skills, evaluation, and general understanding for the international cooperation and activism and fostered spirit of taking initiative, identifying opportunities, and keeping proactive approach regarding their role as citizens. The participants will carry the educational impact further. As it is expected by the setup of the entire “Flow of Activism” project, the multiplication they will provide will lay in concrete implementation of projects developed during the “Structures” training. The activity will be ensued immediately by the stage “Seeds of Activism”, standing for direct work of the project initiatives formed during international activity. Though the concrete characteristics of the carried out projects can´t be presumed at this stage (in order to give the participants maximum liberty), it is safe to say that the projects will positively impact the community and surroundings of the participants and will contribute towards activation of the young people associated with those ones in charge with the projects. The projects of the participants will need to fulfill following criteria: to have a clear plan for positive changes in the participants´ surrounding, to involve youth among their target groups and to comply with the values of Naturefriends and also European values such as solidarity, love and care for nature, open attitude and inclusivity. The project will also utilize the already existing structures of the local partners who (being mostly Naturefriends organizations) have the focus and experience in the field of youth work and youth empowerment. Independently of the particular target group of participants´ own projects implemented during the “Seeds of Activism” phase, the outcomes of the project are expected to impact the wider European public thanks to the final event of the cycle, the international conference “Fruits of Activism” which will be held in Brussels, Destelheide, in mid-November 2019. The conference will target especially representatives of the other international youth networks and umbrellas beyond the Naturefriends, experts in the field of active citizenship, as well as political representatives. It will have an important role in the dissemination and mainstreaming the project results and in the striving to bring the problematics and the needs of youth activism and active engagement in society closer to the mainstream of the discourse of European Union. The conference will produce numerous outcomes such as the audiovisual documentation of the projects and the conference itself, an almanac of achievements and a Position paper on the role of youth in active social engagement. The partners in the project will be positively impacted by increasing their international visibility, fostering their mutual cooperation and partnerships and getting the chance to enrich their portfolio of activities, as well as benefiting from the training of their representatives. IYNF as the main applicant will get valuable experience in the field of local activities and will be able to utilize outcomes of the participants´ initiatives for mainstreaming its own work, especially thanks to the final conference “Fruits of Activism” in November. Also, the local community of Penéstin, France, and the local Naturefriends branch Grand Large and its volunteers will benefit from the project by increasing their international visibility and having the chance for fruitful exchange with the international dimension of the Naturefriends movement. IYNF, partner organizations and the participants themselves will share the results of the project and the state of development of the produced projects via their media channels during 2019. IYNF has been bringing young Europeans together for over 40 years and is always keeping in mind the impact on the European level when designing its activities. Thanks to the expected diversity of the participants (ensured by having partners of the project from 11 European countries on board), the project will by its very nature foster the intercultural dialogue between Europeans from different corners of the continent, and intensive exchange of knowledge and experience. IYNF will also be able to transfer the outputs produced to the level of international forums and platforms it is a member of, most importantly towards the European Youth Forum (YFJ).
