This short-term EVS project was supposed to take place from 1-31st August 2017 in Salfit, Palestine, but Israel didn’t let us pass the border. From Jordan and until the August 9th, we tried to get the necessary visas. The official end of the project was on the August 12th, with the return to Portugal. It meant to target 10 youngsters aged 17-30 years with fewer opportunities (Refugees, educational difficulties; social, geographical and economic obstacles, and cultural differences) sent by MEDesTU. During this time, informal and non-formal learning was applied into practice. The volunteers had the chance to get to know Jordanian people, most of them originally from Palestine, food and traditions as during the breakfast offered by the landlord; to get to know Jordanian places, such as touristic ones such as World Heritage Site Petra, Wadi Rum, the Dead Sea, and walk around the wide city of Amman; to learn informally Arabic in their daily life encounters and local contacts, as well as to practice English, as during the meetings at the EU Delegation with East and West Center for Sustainable Development, for instance, where the volunteers’ needs, contributions and expectations and feedback, relying on a co-design and co-management basis was given particular focus; they were encouraged to take pictures and videos of their experiences, as well as to share them in the google drive, so everybody could access to it after the end of the project; the volunteers were given the space to meet among themselves and with the accompany persons; there was an evaluation meeting using non formal methods and decisions were taken as a group (included for the touristic trips), as well as distribution of tasks, such as cleaning the apartments and cooking meals, so the group would work as a team. Despite the fact that this short-term EVS didn’t take place as such, the youngsters experienced a crucial opportunity of self-empowerment by dealing with adversity and uncertainty, fostering the intercultural mind-sets and transversal competences, encouraging active citizenship and youth participation by realizing that the way for a true Euro-Mediterranean dialogue has to be built - and by them as active players - not being given it for free.
