Aalto Ice Tank

Description

The Aalto Ice and Wave Tank is a 40m x 40m water basin equipped to produce sea ice and waves in model scale. Due to global warming, the interest in the arctic is high. The tank is used to study ships and structures, including offshore wind turbines, under loads due to ice and waves. The tank is also used to study ice mechanics, icing, and wave-structure-ice interaction. The infrastructure is unique. Typically, ice tanks are long and narrow while wave tanks are wide. The Aalto Ice and Wave Tank is the only wide basin in the world that allows tests with both ice and waves. The basin is multifunctional, and can be used for open water tests also. In addition to Aalto and our collaborators, the basin is used by students and industrial partners.
