The department of International Relations at Kadir Has University offers only three BA level courses (European Integration, Turkey-EU Relations and ESDP) on European integration, solely one of which is compulsory as well as one postgraduate and one PhD level course on the European integration as electives. In this context, the limited number of courses in the International Relations curricula at all levels creates a well-grounded need to intensify EU-related study at a higher-education institution of a negotiating country for EU accession. By introducing a new intensive two-track module on the “EU and Security in The Wider Neighbourhood” designed as a two-weeks long specialized teaching programme at the postgraduate level targeting international audience mostly coming from the Eastern and Southern neighbourhood countries, this proposal aims at creating awareness on the EU’s role in the wider neighbourhood. This proposal also fosters the publication and dissemination of the results of academic research. With its 3-year long research plans on “EU’s Role and Capacity in Regional Conflicts” as well as the “Turkey and the EU in the Shared Neighbourhood” reflected in outputs/deliverables such as working papers, articles and books published in international outlets, which rather stay as less-researched topics of the field, specifically from a security approach in a comparative manner, this proposal aims at creating a sound and innovative research strategy. The outputs/scholarly deliverables will not only be adding to the visibility of the University as an institution focusing on EU-related academic work, but also be circulated among relevant policy-makers and government officials which will have a likely impact on the policy-formation processes, thereby providing a link between the scholarly work and the practice of EU politics. The Module plans creating interest in the EU and constitutes the basis for future poles of European knowledge, particularly in Partner countries. Moreover, since the module aims at a target group of young researchers and practioners coming from Turkey as well as various neighbourhood countries, certain awareness on the EU related issues in those specific countries of the Euro-East or Euro-South will be created through traning those target groups. This generation will be aware of the benefits of being an EU partner/member and what it will bring to our daily lives, through direct interaction with the lectures Thus, the project will generate awareness on what the EU is amongst the researchers and practioners of the wider neighbourhood. The module envisaged to be delivered by the module coordinator as an EU Studies expert, supported by a professor specialized in the politics of the Eastern Neighbourhood as well as by a professor of politics in the Middle East, with specific focuses on the security perspectives, will use Blackboard as an online learning tool, some of which will host a guest-lecturer from the EU institutions, and/or EU Embassies, and/or Turkey’s policy-makers on EU-related issues. To sum up, the establishment of a Jean Monnet module aims at intensifying and improving the quality of teaching and research at Kadir Has University, which aims at fostering its teaching and research capacity through global partnerships with a vision of achieving international levels of quality in teaching and research on EU related issues.
