Jean Monnet Chair in European Solidarity and Social Cohesion

Description

The Jean Monnet Chair in European Solidarity and Social Cohesion will expand and deepen the teaching of European Union studies at the Institute for Social and European Studies (ISES). The addition of an annal 2-semester, well defined course on “The Future of Europe in a Global Context: Polity, Policy, and Governance,” is designed using a new approach to an introduction to the field for new European Union studies students, as well as for interested students from other disciplines, regional specializations or countries of origin. The course connects the European project more fully to global processes, and at the same time looks in more depth at the European specificities. It concentrates on the contemporary period, especially after the outbreak of the interdependent crises from the early 2000s. Since many of the students come from East and Central Europe, the Baltics, the Balkans, Turkey, but also increasingly from Asia and Africa, the new courses and activities need to accommodate a diverse variety of academic backgrounds and interests. The activities try to deepen knowledge about underlying and fundamental European values that need to be promoted more than ever today. The course and seminars employ updated methodologies that include new forms of information transmission and therefore the inclusion of press and blogs in reading lists. More interactive teaching methods are also designed to enhance innovation in teaching. The proposed Chairholder will conduct, monitor and supervise the research on EU subjects. This is clearly developed in the research design as the backbone of course and seminar materials and the thematic structure of activities. This is clearly demonstrated in the research outline and in the European and Global Governance Laboratory. As the Director of the programme, she will also oversee the graduate course work of all students in the programme since she this is one of her main responsibilities in oversight of the programme as a whole and has been for over 10 years; that means monitoring student’s progress throughout the length of the entire programme. She will also advise those students writing theses on topics related to her specializations as she has done in the past. Throughout all the activities planned in this project, the Chairholder will encourage, advise and mentor the young generation of teachers and researchers in European Union studies subject areas who may not have had easy access or opportunity to take such courses before.Teaching the course, Europe in a Global Context each semester (7), supplemented by a monthly seminar series The Future on Europe with international speakers. Providing the seminar on Democracy, Solidarity and the European Crisis to International Studies students annually. Providing the seminar Economic Inequality and Social Unrest: Consequences for Social Cohesion in Europe annually and during the summer universities. Developing new curricula, increasing European content to the international program. Recruiting and advising MA students. Organizing workshops, summer and winter schools and lecture series with European Studies content. Promoting EU studies-related research, e.g, The Politics of Solidarity and Contentiousness in Europe, Migration and Refugees; Memory and Populist Politics; Conflict Resolution; The Future of Europe. Promoting young researchers and their involvement in the teaching program and supporting their publications.
