Business Process Management (BPM) is a popular management discipline that is an important part of higher education programs. BPM-related education seeks to equip students with knowledge and skills to design, implement, analyze, improve and manage business processes in and among organizations. While most of BPM teachings provide prescriptive advise to ensure efficient business process work, little attention is brought to the organizational dynamics that unfold around business process work. For example, it has been observed that organizational actors may not enact processes in ways that are predefined in process models, and business processes can change in unintended ways over time. Why and under what circumstances do such behaviors occur? What other dynamics can occur? How can management consider such dynamics? In this project, we will approach these questions by designing an interdisciplinary reference curriculum that integrates theories and methods from the organizational studies (OS) to create and convey a more holistic understanding of BPM. Taking a descriptive stance on organizational work and exploring how and why organizations behave and change over time from, the field of OS offers a number of theories, methods and empirical studies that can be relevant to explain how business process work is carried out in organizations. Considering these insights in BPM education is highly relevant but a systematic integration of BPM and OS has not yet been done in research, practice or teaching. The proposed curriculum will support students in the acquisition and development of basic skills. First, this curriculum will shape their interdisciplinary skills to (1) design, (2) implement, and (3) manage business processes in practice.Second, we will equip students with competences to better cope with the demands of rapidly changing business environments. Since students will learn to be aware of dynamics that indicate a change of work practices, they will be able to take appropriate actions once they are involved in management activities. Finally, we will promote an interdisciplinary view of BPM. We will create partnerships between four European universities that have distinct and strong competences in BPM and/or OS. The integration of these two fields will result in innovative teaching activities that can be applied at universities across Europe. To develop an interdisciplinary reference curriculum that integrates BPM and organizational theory, this project has three major sub-objectives:1. We will establish an interdisciplinary foundation for the curriculum 2. We will develop a reference curriculum that integrates BPM and organizational theory. This will be an interdisciplinary 4 ECTS-university course that will entail presentation materials, hands-on exercises and other relevant materials.3. We will evaluate and disseminate the results. To ensure that the developed curriculum will address the needs of BPM while considering the most relevant theories from OS, this project will involve an interdisciplinary consortium that has expertise in BPM and/or OS:- The University of Liechtenstein (expertise in BPM and OS)- The Vienna University of Economics and Business (expertise in in BPM) - The University of Cologne (expertise in BPM and OS)- Radboud University (expertise in OS)To ensure that this interdisciplinary project runs smoothly and creates relevant results, we are planning to conduct five transnational project meetings that will take place at all participating universities in Liechtenstein, Austria, Germany and Netherlands. This project will generate impact in two important respects.First and foremost, it will have an impact on higher education. BPM is taught across European universities and the integration of OS into BPM education will provide students with a more holistic understanding of BPM. Since we will disseminate the outcomes of this project across our networks, and share our findings and insights on various online platforms, we expect that this project will be taken up by other universities (either as a whole curriculum, or parts of it).Second, in light of the many recent claims that BPM and OS have strong connections which can open up the paths for new research agendas, this project will have scholarly impact. Since the proposed project will constitute the first systematic attempt to bridge these two research fields, we are certain that there will be a strong and sustainable research-related impact.
