Abstract

; This work presents the study of the mechanical performance and pollutant emissions of a diesel engine using diesel/biodiesel blends. The biodiesel was obtained from palm oil through supercritical transesterification process. Four fuel blends were prepared at 5%, 10%, 20% and 30% (B5, B10, B20 and B30, respectively) and their physical and chemical properties were analyzed. The influence of these blends on emissions and engine performance was studied by the SAE J1349 standard. The results showed that the performance of the engine became marginally worse with increase of biodiesel in the fuel blend, as power decreased from 2,6% to 7,4%, torque decreased from 2% to 6% with the blends B5 and B30, respectively. In terms of emissions, unburned hydrocarbons and carbon dioxide showed an increase, whereas monoxide carbon, nitrogen oxides, oxygen and particulate ...
