Abstract

Investimentos na diversificação da matriz energética abrangem globalmente a busca por fontes preferencialmente renováveis e mais baratas, devido a aspectos econômicos e ambientais. Neste contexto, o biodiesel, sendo um combustível alternativo e renovável, merece destaque e surge como alternativa para atender a demanda da energia mundial e substituir o óleo diesel. O biodiesel é um combustível que pode ser produzido a partir de óleos vegetais, gorduras animais e óleo de origem microbiana (algas, fungos e bactérias). As matérias-primas são convertidas em biodiesel por meio de uma reação química envolvendo álcool e catalisador. Atualmente, diversos tipos de sistemas vêm sendo estudados visando o desenvolvimento da reação de esterificação de forma mais rápida e econômica. Assim, este trabalho revisa os processos de produção do biodiesel e diesel, tipos de matérias-primas usadas na sua produção, os subprodutos do processo e as vantagens e desvantagens dos combustíveis. Dessa maneira o biodiesel apresentou um potencial positivo para a substituição do óleo diesel, contudo, não imediato, pois ainda necessita de mais incentivo no estudo de desenvolvimento de novas tecnologias. ; Investments in the diversification of the energy matrix encompass the search for preferentially renewable and cheaper sources due to economic and environmental aspects. In this context, biodiesel, being an alternative and renewable fuel, deserves attention and emerges as an alternative to meet the world's energy demand and replace diesel oil. Biodiesel is a fuel that can be produced from vegetable oils, animal fats and oil of microbial origin (algae, fungi and bacteria). The raw materials are converted into biodiesel through a chemical reaction involving alcohol and a catalyst. Currently, several types of systems have been studied to develop the esterification reaction in a faster and more economical way.
