European coal territories from origins to reconversions

Abstract

At the turn of the millennium, the decline of European coal was confirmed except for a new rebound in energy balances. The ECSC treaty expired in 2002. After others, the French mines closed in 2003 (Provence) and 2004 (Lorraine). This moment concludes a rich history spanning nearly three centuries, which is the focus of the first part of this book. The reconversion of the coal-mining regions discussed in the second part of the work modifies the geography of the continent. The large European basins, which drew the map of population centers in the 19th and 20th centuries, are today poles of demographic dispersion. The reconversion of landscapes must take into account social and mental transformations while preserving and enhancing elements of the previous heritage. Finally, it is with this industrial heritage like any other, it will only live if those who are its producers and heirs, so decide.
