Abstract

The concern regarding energy and food security is evident in several European and international policies, which reinforces the importance of accelerating and financing the energy transition through the implementation of low-carbon technologies, with the goals of carbon neutrality and reducing the effects of climate change in agriculture. However, to achieve these goals, it is necessary to understand the social acceptance of the decarbonisation of the agri-food sector and associated socio-psychological dimensions. In a sense, this research contributes to a first exploration of the representations of the written press in Portugal around the decarbonisation in the sector; considering that the media are one of the main players in contemporary societies responsible for the co-construction and transformation of social representations and related social changes. Through a thematic analysis, this work examines articles (N=102) from five Portuguese newspapers (Público, Jornal de Negócios, Observador, Jornal Económico and Correio da Manhã), selected between the period of February 1, 2021, and June 30 from 2022. The analysis reveals little discussion and dissemination of decarbonisation issues in the agri-food sector in the national press. The discourse on decarbonisation issues is essentially drowned out by current crises (i.e., the covid-19 pandemic, extreme drought, and the invasion of Ukraine by Russia). The relationship between energy and the agri-food sector is mostly presented with a focus on the economic dimension (vs. Environmental and social), in large producers and national level (vs. Regional and local).
