Abstract

[Abstract] This investigation discusses the causes and impacts related to the deep crisis which is affecting the shellfish sector in several galician estuaries. Focusing on the context of the "Illa de Arousa", there are identified the direct effects of climate change, as it is highly related not only with environmental variables, but also with profound social variables: economic precariousness, competition over the territory, gender discrimination, social vulnerability, among others. In order to examine the situated knowledge involved on the understanding of those consecuences, interviews and informal conversations holded with the shellfish catchers and the members of the shellfish association of Arousa will be used holded to the shellfish catchers and the members of the shellfish association of Arousa. The objective is to show the strong link/interrelation between the social, economic and environmental variables behind the crisis. The next three elements stand out: the experience of whom suffers the effects of the crisis most directly, the barriers that this complexity brings up for building a narrative about the direct effects of the crisis, and the situation of social and economical vulnerability, also related tto an epistemological to which the women who live from working and taking care of the estuary sands are headed to.
