Les agroforêts à hévéas améliorées en Indonésie : mythe ou réalité

Abstract

Les "jungle rubber" sont le système agroforestier complexe le plus largement disséminé en Indonésie combinant production et environnement durable. L'amélioration de leur productivité devient nécessaire depuis les années 80. L'alternative proposée par les projets a été, depuis 1970, basée sur la monoculture avec un coût en intrant et travail élevé. L'hévéa reste une "valeur refuge". Avec une capacité financière limitée, les producteurs souhaitent investir dans des systèmes hévéicoles à coûts intermédiaires. Le Smallholder Rubber Agroforestry Project a proposé en approche négociée des systèmes de culture agroforestiers à base d'hévéas clonaux : les Rubber Agroforestry Systems (RAS). Les pratiques agroforestières diminuent le travail et les intrants en période immature. Les freins à l'adoption des innovations restent l'investissement en travail par rapport à des stratégies généralement extensives, le manque et la faible qualité du matériel végétal amélioré et le manque d'information technique. Les possibilités de développement des RAS sont plus actuelles que jamais dans un environnement économique difficile. (Résumé d'auteur)
