Abstract

De par la masse importante de carbone qu'elles contiennent (81 % du carbone de la biomasse terrestre) et en raison de la lenteur des cycles forestiers, les forets pourraient contribuer a limiter l'effet de serre, en immobilisant a moyen ou long terme une part du carbone emis lors de l'utilisation de sources d'energies fossiles. Le stock de carbone dans la biomasse des forets francaises est evalue a 860 MtC pour 14,5 millions d'hectares de foret, celui des sols a 1 140 MtC. Le stock total des forets francaises est donc de 2 000 MtC. Le stockage net a ete dans les forets francaises de 10,5 MtC/an entre 1979 et 1991, soit 10 % de nos emissions annuelles de carbone fossile. Ce puits est lie a l'accroissement de la surface forestiere, de la productivite des peuplements, au vieillissement de la foret francaise alors que les niveaux de prelevements de bois restent tres moderes (61 % de la croissance). Nous discutons enfin les options forestieres permettant d'accroitre cette fonction puits de la foret : augmentation des surfaces forestieres, utilisation d'essences a croissance rapide, vieillissement des peuplements, diminution du niveau des eclaircies et du travail du sol, mise en reserve integrale...
