Circular economy

Abstract

The circular economy (CE) addresses sustainability challenges by reducing material and energy use, and promoting sustainability in societies, value chains and organizations. CE is pivotal in innovation management due to the significant changes and rethinking it necessitates. This entry explores CE and innovations through the 10R framework, which illustrates increasing circularity from material recovery to rethinking the use of products. At the base, the focus is on material use (recover and recycle), with innovations enhancing technical efficiency. In the middle, product or component lifespan is extended (repurpose, remanufacture, refurbish, repair and reuse), with innovations altering consumption habits. At the top, smart product use and manufacturing (reduce, rethink and refuse) require radical innovations to transform consumption and production systems towards a CE.
