Abstract

Tradução de leaflet do projeto AGFORWARD - A manutenção de elevada biodiversidade em paisagens produtivas é um desafio chave para a conservação. As árvores antigas de grande porte são um elemento chave para o valor ecológico destes sistemas silvopastoris. As cavidades no lenho e a casca envelhecida constituem uma herança biológica e ecológica que cria uma larga diversidade de habitats para muitos organismos. Podem ter também uma grande importância sociocultural em certos contextos (p. ex., como expressão da identidade rural, e como locais para eventos populares e turismo). As árvores grandes e antigas estão em declínio acentuado nas paisagens dominadas pela produção económica, incluindo as pastagens, por não serem explicitamente reconhecidas pelas políticas agrícolas, florestais e da conservação da natureza. Um desafio chave para a sua sustentabilidade em sistemas silvopastoris consiste em assegurar que o seu valor tangível e intangível seja totalmente reconhecido pelas comunidades locais e, mais formalmente, pelas políticas agrícolas, florestais e de conservação da natureza.
