Abstract

The carbon dynamic in the dry tropical forest is important for define strategies for its conservation. The objectives of this research were: 1) identify the possible relationships between taxonomic and functional diversity in the stored carbon; and 2) establish the functional group of plants with the better prediction of carbon content in the tropical dry forest in order to optimize the carbon measurements in the ecosystem. The results are presented in two chapters. In the first one, are detailed the results of the relationships between stored carbon with the species richness and with functional diversity features and indexes. In the second chapter are described the Plant functional types characteristics, and, the developed model for every single functional group. In a general way, is concluded for the Colombian dry forest, the evidence of divergent relationships between the stored carbon with the taxonomic and functional diversity. Two (2) PFT were obtained. The PFT 1 presents a tendency to conservative use of resources, in the other hand, the TFPS2 coincide with the acquirement strategy. The PFT 1 was the one that better predicts carbon in the five parcels. This study contributes to support actions over the entailment of dry forest in carbon markets.
