Dimensionamiento y selección de turbinas eólicas para el bombeo de agua en zonas pre-montañosas = Sizing and selection of wind turbines for water pumping in pre-mountain zones

Abstract

This work arises from the need to reduce costs by concept of electricity and fuel consumption in Las Terrazas complex, Cuba. A visit to the place was made and the highest and closest places were identified. An evaluation of them was made, selecting El Salon hill as the study place. With satellite data and international databases, the average wind speed was determinate (5.7 m/s at 50 m), which favors the wind machines installation. These characteristics have been adopted to reduce costs for the complex by electricity consumption for water pumping. It has proposed to install a wind turbine with horizontal axis. The proposed mathematical model allows selecting the more feasible wind turbine options. From a database composed by 17 models of wind turbines, five wind turbines were selected as the most economically feasible. Additionally, the mathematical model was able to determine the optimal dimensions of the selected equipment. According to the mathematical model, the most suitable wind turbine is the Nordex N27/150 (option 1), based on an economic point of view and because is in agreement with the requirements of the case studied.
