Abstract

Les conditions de croissance évoluent sous l'effet des changements climatiques et dépôts atmosphériques ; la société demande des preuves de bonne gestion ainsi que des services écologiques et sociaux croissants ; la production forestière est soumise à d'importantes contraintes économiques. Pour relever les défis qui en résultent, le gestionnaire forestier doit toujours mieux évaluer les potentialités des milieux, préserver et valoriser la diversité, réduire les risques, être attentif aux transitions rapides, organiser la multifonctionnalité jusqu'à l'échelle de vastes territoires. Il sera ainsi à même d'exploiter au mieux les peuplements condamnés, de rajeunir ceux qui doivent l'être, d'éviter les sur-densités, d'améliorer la récolte finale, enfin d'innover pour mieux fixer le carbone, économiser l'eau, établir des futaies claires et mélangées.
