Abstract

; The building sector is one of the productive sectors that we should act upon if we want to drastically reduce CO2 emissions. Therefore, adapting the existing buildings to the future energy requirements resulting from Directive 2010/31/EU of the European Parliament (1) is a challenge we must address if we want to seriously deal with the global warming and climate change issue. This topic is addressed in this two-section paper. After an introduction to buildings with nearly zero energy consumption, the paper describes a proposal to achieve these objectives in an existing industrial facility: the solid waste treatment plant of Mercabarna, the central food market of Barcelona’s metropolitan area. The proposal outlines the architectural modifications designed to enable the installation of a PV system capable of producing the same amount of energy consumed in the existing facility and also improve the environmental aspects of the current building. ; Peer Reviewed
