Experimental test bench for assessing condensation on a LP-EGR cooler

Abstract

[EN] A test bench has been designed to assess condensation formation produced on the interior surfaces of a small heat exchanger that cools a hot stream of humid air during the warm up stage, when its coolant starts from very cold conditions. An experimental campaign has been conducted with three mass flow rates between 10–40 kg/h, three different coolant initial temperatures between -10 to 5 ◦C and four operating temperatures between 45–150 ◦C, covering common conditions found in the Low Pressure EGR system of IC engines under cold starts. A simple mean value condensation model is developed based on a psychrometric analysis, which is able to reproduce the trends shown by the experimental tests.
