Abstract

The management, control and monitoring of air quality is becoming one of the main challenges of urban societies. In this framework, the development of new tools that allow continuous monitoring of air quality is essential for the study of actions, in order to improve the levels of pollutants in the air that are harmful to the health of citizens. The most recent technological advances in air quality control and management methods are attracting more and more attention to so-called low-cost sensors. These sensors allow air quality monitoring at a lower cost and, in theory, in many more locations. The initial objective of this work was to use satellite data for the calibration of data from the low-cost surface sensors, developed in the Crowd-sourced Air Quality Monitoring System (C-AQM) project. After the first analyzes, the need for a preliminary study consisting of determining the correspondence between satellite data and official surface air quality measurement stations was perceived. This has finally been the main focus of this work. Thus, a methodology for estimating nitrogen dioxide (NO2) on the surface using satellite data is proposed. The data used are freely accessible from the region of Catalonia (Spain), which were processed using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) programs. An analysis has been made of the relationship between satellite data, surface air quality stations and meteorological data. The results show that it is possible to estimate the level of NO2 on the surface using data from the Sentinel-5 Percursor satellite. However, a relationship between air quality data sets and meteorological variable information has not been determined.
