Flue-gas desulphurisation—Drax: the first UK retrofit
Abstract
In 1987 it was decided that Drax would be the first UK power station to be fitted with flue-gas desulphurisation equipment. Drax is the largest UK power station (4000 MW) and the largest coal-fired station in Western Europe. Work has now started on the FGD installation which, when completed in 1996, will be the largest in the world. The author discusses the reasons for choosing Drax and the limestone/gypsum FGD process. The installation of the system, the changes in the electrical system and the control and instrumentation are discussed. The civil work and project information are also discussed.
