; Recently, bike-sharing has become extremely popular in urban areas of China. However, the rapid development of bike-sharing has also brought with it various social problems, such as company failures, abandoned bikes and illegal parking, so it is often criticized by the media in both China and Japan. It is necessary to clarify the status of shared bikes as a means of transportation and consider the sustainability of bike-sharing in urban transportation.Firstly, this paper points out two reasons for the explosive development of bike-sharing services in China. The first is the slow development of public transportation. The second is the rapid development of motorization. Next, this paper analyzes both the characteristics and actual use of shared bikes by looking at development trends in major cities. According to this research, bike-sharing is a transport system that tends to spread throughout large cities with dense populations. Finally, by fully analyzing the use of shared bikes in Shenzhen and the availability of bike-sharing in urban centers, this paper concludes that bike-sharing is a suitable transportation system for ‘Densely Inhabited Districts.’ From the perspective of urban transportation, it shows the sustainability of bike-sharing as a means of short-distance transportation for the “last mile.”
