There are 4 geotiff files per each of the lifeform classes evaluated in this study: herbaceous, tree, shrub, and non-vegetation. The files corresponding to each lifeform class are indicated by the first two letters in the file name, HC indicates herbaceous cover, TC indicates tree cover, SC indicates shrub cover, and NC indicates non-vegetation cover. 1\. NA Input data We use the available data from the “Vegetative Lifeform Cover from Landsat SR for CONUS” product (https://daac.ornl.gov/cgi-bin/dsviewer.pl?ds_id=1809) to evaluate the changes in vegetation fractional cover. The information for the climate factors was derived from the TerraClimate data catalog (https://www.climatologylab.org/terraclimate.html). We downloaded data from this catalog for the period 1971 to 2018 for the following variables: minimum temperature (TMIN), precipitation (PPT), actual evapotranspiration (AET), potential evapotranspiration (PET), and climatic water deficit (DEF). Preprocessing of vegetation fractional cover data We resampled and aligned the maps of fractional cover using pixel averaging to the extent and resolution of the TerraClimate dataset (~ 4 km). Then, we calculated rates of lifeform cover change per pixel using the Theil-Sen slope analysis (Sen, 1968; Theil, 1992). Preprocessing of climate variables data To process the climate data, we defined a year time step as the months from July of one year to July of the next. Following this definition, we constructed annual maps of each climate variable for the years 1971 to 2018. The annual maps of each climate variable were further summarized per pixel, into mean and slope (calculated as the Theil-Sen slope) across one, two, three, four, five, ten-, and 15-year lags. Estimation of climate potential We constructed a final multilayer dataset of response and predictor variables for the CONUS including the resulting maps of fractional cover rate of change (four response variables), the mean and slope maps for the climate variables for all the time-lags (70 predictor variables), and the initial percent cover for each lifeform in the year 1986 (four predictor variables). We evaluated for each pixel in the CONUS which of the predictor variables produced the minimum potential rate of change in fractional cover for each lifeform class. To do that, we first calculated the 100% quantile hull of the distribution of each predictor variable against each response variable. To calculate the 100% quantile of the predictor variables’ distribution we divided the total range of each predictor variable into equal-sized bins. The size and number of bins were set specifically per variable due to differences in their data distribution. For each of the bins, we calculated the maximum value of the vegetation rate of change, which resulted in a lookup table with the lower and upper boundaries of each bin, and the associated maximum rate of change. We constructed a total of 296 lookup tables, one per lifeform class and predictor variable combination. The resulting lookup tables were used to construct spatially explicit maps of maximum vegetation rate of change from each of the predictor variable input rasters, and the final climate potential maps were constructed by stacking all the resulting maps per lifeform class and selecting for each pixel the minimum predicted rate of change and the predictor variable that produced that rate. Identifying climate-limited areas We defined climate-limited areas as the parts of the CONUS with little or no differences between the estimated climate potential and the observed rates of change in fractional cover. To identify these areas, we subtracted the raster of observed rates of change from the raster of climate potential for each lifeform class. In the study “CLIMATE-LIMITED VEGETATION CHANGE IN THE CONTERMINOUS UNITED STATES OF AMERICA”, published in the Global Change Biology journal, we evaluated the effects of climate conditions on vegetation composition and distribution in the conterminous United States (CONUS). To disentangle the direct effects of climate change from different non-climate factors, we applied "Liebig's law of the minimum" in a geospatial context, and determined the climate-limited potential for tree, shrub, herbaceous, and non-vegetation fractional cover change. We then compared these potential rates against observed change rates for the period 1986 to 2018 to identify areas of the CONUS where vegetation change is likely being limited by climatic conditions. This dataset contains the input and the resulting rasters for the study which include a) the observed rates of vegetation change, b) the climate derived potential vegetation rates of change, c) the difference between potential and observed values and d) the identified climatic limiting factor.

    Pearl millet is an important food and fodder crop cultivated in the arid and semi-arid regions of Africa and Asia, and is now expanding to other regions for forage purpose. This study was conducted to better understand the forage quantity and quality traits to enhance the feed value of this crop. Two sets of pearl millet hybrids (80 single cross hybrids in Set-I and 50 top cross hybrids in Set-II) along with their parents evaluated multi-locationally for the forage-linked traits under multi-cut (two cuts) system revealed significant variability for the forage traits in the hybrids and parents. The mean better parent heterosis (BPH) for total dry forage yield (TDFY) was 136% across all the single cross hybrids and 57% across all the top cross hybrids. The mean BPH for in vitro organic matter digestibility (IVOMD) varied from −11 to 7% in the single cross hybrids and −13 to 11% in the top cross hybrids across cuts. The findings of TDFY and IVOMD heterosis in these sets indicated the potential of improvement of the hybrid cultivars for forage quantity and quality in forage pearl millet. The parental lines single cross parent (SCP)-L02, SCP-L06, and top cross parent (TCP)-T08 found superior in the forage quantity and quality traits can be utilized in the future breeding programs. Most of the forage traits were found to be controlled by using the non-additive gene action. A diverse panel of 105 forage-type hybrid parents (Set-III) genotyped following genotyping by sequencing (GBS) and phenotyped for crude protein (CP) and IVOMD under multi-cuts for 2 years identified one stable significant single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) on LG4 for CP, and nine SNPs for IVOMD distributed across all the linkage groups except on LG2. The identified loci, once validated, then could be used for the forage quality traits improvement in pearl millet through marker-assisted selection.

    Abstract Background The ascomycete fungus Podospora anserina has been appreciated for its targeted carbohydrate-active enzymatic arsenal. As a late colonizer of herbivorous dung, the fungus acts specifically on the more recalcitrant fraction of lignocellulose and this lignin-rich biotope might have resulted in the evolution of ligninolytic activities. However, the lignin-degrading abilities of the fungus have not been demonstrated by chemical analyses at the molecular level and are, thus far, solely based on genome and secretome predictions. To evaluate whether P. anserina might provide a novel source of lignin-active enzymes to tap into for potential biotechnological applications, we comprehensively mapped wheat straw lignin during fungal growth and characterized the fungal secretome. Results Quantitative 13C lignin internal standard py-GC–MS analysis showed substantial lignin removal during the 7 days of fungal growth (24% w/w), though carbohydrates were preferably targeted (58% w/w removal). Structural characterization of residual lignin by using py-GC–MS and HSQC NMR analyses demonstrated that Cα-oxidized substructures significantly increased through fungal action, while intact β-O-4′ aryl ether linkages, p-coumarate and ferulate moieties decreased, albeit to lesser extents than observed for the action of basidiomycetes. Proteomic analysis indicated that the presence of lignin induced considerable changes in the secretome of P. anserina. This was particularly reflected in a strong reduction of cellulases and galactomannanases, while H2O2-producing enzymes clearly increased. The latter enzymes, together with laccases, were likely involved in the observed ligninolysis. Conclusions For the first time, we provide unambiguous evidence for the ligninolytic activity of the ascomycete fungus P. anserina and expand the view on its enzymatic repertoire beyond carbohydrate degradation. Our results can be of significance for the development of biological lignin conversion technologies by contributing to the quest for novel lignin-active enzymes and organisms. Background The ascomycete fungus Podospora anserina has been appreciated for its targeted carbohydrate-active enzymatic arsenal. As a late colonizer of herbivorous dung, the fungus acts specifically on the more recalcitrant fraction of lignocellulose and this lignin-rich biotope might have resulted in the evolution of ligninolytic activities. However, the lignin-degrading abilities of the fungus have not been demonstrated by chemical analyses at the molecular level and are, thus far, solely based on genome and secretome predictions. To evaluate whether P. anserina might provide a novel source of lignin-active enzymes to tap into for potential biotechnological applications, we comprehensively mapped wheat straw lignin during fungal growth and characterized the fungal secretome. Results Quantitative 13C lignin internal standard py-GC–MS analysis showed substantial lignin removal during the 7 days of fungal growth (24% w/w), though carbohydrates were preferably targeted (58% w/w removal). Structural characterization of residual lignin by using py-GC–MS and HSQC NMR analyses demonstrated that Cα-oxidized substructures significantly increased through fungal action, while intact β-O-4′ aryl ether linkages, p-coumarate and ferulate moieties decreased, albeit to lesser extents than observed for the action of basidiomycetes.     Poleward range extensions by warm-adapted sea urchins are switching temperate marine ecosystems from kelp-dominated to barren-dominated systems that favour the establishment of range-extending tropical fishes. Yet, such tropicalization may be buffered by ocean acidification, which reduces urchin grazing performance and the urchin barrens that tropical range-extending fishes prefer. Using ecosystems experiencing natural warming and acidification, we show that ocean acidification could buffer warming-facilitated tropicalization by reducing urchin populations (by 87%) and inhibiting the formation of barrens. This buffering effect of CO2 enrichment was observed at natural CO2 vents that are associated with a shift from a barren-dominated to a turf-dominated state, which we found is less favourable to tropical fishes. Together, these observations suggest that ocean acidification may buffer the tropicalization effect of ocean warming against urchin barren formation via multiple processes (fewer urchins and barrens) and consequently slow the increasing rate of tropicalization of temperate fish communities. In order to allow full comparability with other ocean acidification data sets, the R package seacarb (Gattuso et al, 2021) was used to compute a complete and consistent set of carbonate system variables, as described by Nisumaa et al. (2010). In this dataset the original values were archived in addition with the recalculated parameters (see related PI). The date of carbonate chemistry calculation by seacarb is 2021-07-26.

    The attached spreadsheet comprises raw data related to developing an HPLC analytical method, which is used for the analysis of food composition and compounds involved in biomass reactions . The dataset in addition to the incorporated mathematical formulas guide researchers and quality control employees working at food and biomass industries on how to design an experimental design to yield a robust analytical chromatography protocol. Importantly, mathematical formulas furnished with the datasheet feature a user-friendly template for all calculations needed for preparing analytical standards, mix standards, real samples, and the corresponding calibrations. This spreadsheet is composed of two sheets where the first one entitled 'HPLC Standards' deals with the calculations of the concentrations of analytical standards and their relevant calibrations plots. Whereas the second sheet entitled 'Samples Run' is designated for calculating the final concentrations of the samples under analysis. Moreover, the latter provides a concise approach on how to run an HPLC sequence for the quantification of the samples' ingredients. In addition, statistics as well as relative response factor of the used internal standard calculations are demonstrated.

There are 4 geotiff files per each of the lifeform classes evaluated in this study: herbaceous, tree, shrub, and non-vegetation. NA Input data We use the available data from the “Vegetative Lifeform Cover from Landsat SR for CONUS” product (https://daac.ornl.gov/cgi-bin/dsviewer.pl?ds_id=1809) to evaluate the changes in vegetation fractional cover. The information for the climate factors was derived from the TerraClimate data catalog (https://www.climatologylab.org/terraclimate.html). We downloaded data from this catalog for the period 1971 to 2018 for the following variables: minimum temperature (TMIN), precipitation (PPT), actual evapotranspiration (AET), potential evapotranspiration (PET), and climatic water deficit (DEF). Preprocessing of vegetation fractional cover data We resampled and aligned the maps of fractional cover using pixel averaging to the extent and resolution of the TerraClimate dataset (~ 4 km). Then, we calculated rates of lifeform cover change per pixel using the Theil-Sen slope analysis (Sen, 1968; Theil, 1992). Preprocessing of climate variables data To process the climate data, we defined a year time step as the months from July of one year to July of the next. Following this definition, we constructed annual maps of each climate variable for the years 1971 to 2018. The annual maps of each climate variable were further summarized per pixel, into mean and slope (calculated as the Theil-Sen slope) across one, two, three, four, five, ten-, and 15-year lags. Estimation of climate potential We constructed a final multilayer dataset of response and predictor variables for the CONUS including the resulting maps of fractional cover rate of change (four response variables), the mean and slope maps for the climate variables for all the time-lags (70 predictor variables), and the initial percent cover for each lifeform in the year 1986 (four predictor variables). We evaluated for each pixel in the CONUS which of the predictor variables produced the minimum potential rate of change in fractional cover for each lifeform class. To do that, we first calculated the 100% quantile hull of the distribution of each predictor variable against each response variable. To calculate the 100% quantile of the predictor variables’ distribution we divided the total range of each predictor variable into equal-sized bins. The size and number of bins were set specifically per variable due to differences in their data distribution. For each of the bins, we calculated the maximum value of the vegetation rate of change, which resulted in a lookup table with the lower and upper boundaries of each bin, and the associated maximum rate of change. We constructed a total of 296 lookup tables, one per lifeform class and predictor variable combination. The resulting lookup tables were used to construct spatially explicit maps of maximum vegetation rate of change from each of the predictor variable input rasters, and the final climate potential maps were constructed by stacking all the resulting maps per lifeform class and selecting for each pixel the minimum predicted rate of change and the predictor variable that produced that rate. Identifying climate-limited areas We defined climate-limited areas as the parts of the CONUS with little or no differences between the estimated climate potential and the observed rates of change in fractional cover. To identify these areas, we subtracted the raster of observed rates of change from the raster of climate potential for each lifeform class. In the study “CLIMATE-LIMITED VEGETATION CHANGE IN THE CONTERMINOUS UNITED STATES OF AMERICA”, published in the Global Change Biology journal, we evaluated the effects of climate conditions on vegetation composition and distribution in the conterminous United States (CONUS). To disentangle the direct effects of climate change from different non-climate factors, we applied "Liebig's law of the minimum" in a geospatial context, and determined the climate-limited potential for tree, shrub, herbaceous, and non-vegetation fractional cover change. We then compared these potential rates against observed change rates for the period 1986 to 2018 to identify areas of the CONUS where vegetation change is likely being limited by climatic conditions. This dataset contains the input and the resulting rasters for the study which include a) the observed rates of vegetation change, b) the climate derived potential vegetation rates of change, c) the difference between potential and observed values and d) the identified climatic limiting factor.

Two sets of pearl millet hybrids (80 single cross hybrids in Set-I and 50 top cross hybrids in Set-II) along with their parents evaluated multi-locationally for the forage-linked traits under multi-cut (two cuts) system revealed significant variability for the forage traits in the hybrids and parents. The mean better parent heterosis (BPH) for total dry forage yield (TDFY) was 136% across all the single cross hybrids and 57% across all the top cross hybrids. The mean BPH for in vitro organic matter digestibility (IVOMD) varied from −11 to 7% in the single cross hybrids and −13 to 11% in the top cross hybrids across cuts. The findings of TDFY and IVOMD heterosis in these sets indicated the potential of improvement of the hybrid cultivars for forage quantity and quality in forage pearl millet. The parental lines single cross parent (SCP)-L02, SCP-L06, and top cross parent (TCP)-T08 found superior in the forage quantity and quality traits can be utilized in the future breeding programs. Most of the forage traits were found to be controlled by using the non-additive gene action. A diverse panel of 105 forage-type hybrid parents (Set-III) genotyped following genotyping by sequencing (GBS) and phenotyped for crude protein (CP) and IVOMD under multi-cuts for 2 years identified one stable significant single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) on LG4 for CP, and nine SNPs for IVOMD distributed across all the linkage groups except on LG2. The identified loci, once validated, then could be used for the forage quality traits improvement in pearl millet through marker-assisted selection.

    Abstract Background The ascomycete fungus Podospora anserina has been appreciated for its targeted carbohydrate-active enzymatic arsenal. As a late colonizer of herbivorous dung, the fungus acts specifically on the more recalcitrant fraction of lignocellulose and this lignin-rich biotope might have resulted in the evolution of ligninolytic activities. However, the lignin-degrading abilities of the fungus have not been demonstrated by chemical analyses at the molecular level and are, thus far, solely based on genome and secretome predictions. To evaluate whether P. anserina might provide a novel source of lignin-active enzymes to tap into for potential biotechnological applications, we comprehensively mapped wheat straw lignin during fungal growth and characterized the fungal secretome. Results Quantitative 13C lignin internal standard py-GC–MS analysis showed substantial lignin removal during the 7 days of fungal growth (24% w/w), though carbohydrates were preferably targeted (58% w/w removal). Structural characterization of residual lignin by using py-GC–MS and HSQC NMR analyses demonstrated that Cα-oxidized substructures significantly increased through fungal action, while intact β-O-4′ aryl ether linkages, p-coumarate and ferulate moieties decreased, albeit to lesser extents than observed for the action of basidiomycetes. Proteomic analysis indicated that the presence of lignin induced considerable changes in the secretome of P. anserina. This was particularly reflected in a strong reduction of cellulases and galactomannanases, while H2O2-producing enzymes clearly increased. The latter enzymes, together with laccases, were likely involved in the observed ligninolysis. Conclusions For the first time, we provide unambiguous evidence for the ligninolytic activity of the ascomycete fungus P. anserina and expand the view on its enzymatic repertoire beyond carbohydrate degradation. Our results can be of significance for the development of biological lignin conversion technologies by contributing to the quest for novel lignin-active enzymes and organisms. Yet, such tropicalization may be buffered by ocean acidification, which reduces urchin grazing performance and the urchin barrens that tropical range-extending fishes prefer. Using ecosystems experiencing natural warming and acidification, we show that ocean acidification could buffer warming-facilitated tropicalization by reducing urchin populations (by 87%) and inhibiting the formation of barrens. This buffering effect of CO2 enrichment was observed at natural CO2 vents that are associated with a shift from a barren-dominated to a turf-dominated state, which we found is less favourable to tropical fishes. Together, these observations suggest that ocean acidification may buffer the tropicalization effect of ocean warming against urchin barren formation via multiple processes (fewer urchins and barrens) and consequently slow the increasing rate of tropicalization of temperate fish communities. In order to allow full comparability with other ocean acidification data sets, the R package seacarb (Gattuso et al, 2021) was used to compute a complete and consistent set of carbonate system variables, as described by Nisumaa et al. (2010). In this dataset the original values were archived in addition with the recalculated parameters (see related PI). The date of carbonate chemistry calculation by seacarb is 2021-07-26.

    The attached spreadsheet comprises raw data related to developing an HPLC analytical method, which is used for the analysis of food composition and compounds involved in biomass reactions . The dataset in addition to the incorporated mathematical formulas guide researchers and quality control employees working at food and biomass industries on how to design an experimental design to yield a robust analytical chromatography protocol. Importantly, mathematical formulas furnished with the datasheet feature a user-friendly template for all calculations needed for preparing analytical standards, mix standards, real samples, and the corresponding calibrations. This spreadsheet is composed of two sheets where the first one entitled 'HPLC Standards' deals with the calculations of the concentrations of analytical standards and their relevant calibrations plots. Whereas the second sheet entitled 'Samples Run' is designated for calculating the final concentrations of the samples under analysis. Moreover, the latter provides a concise approach on how to run an HPLC sequence for the quantification of the samples' ingredients. In addition, statistics as well as relative response factor of the used internal standard calculations are demonstrated.
