    Abstract The expansion of Sargassum muticum in the Danish estuary Limfjorden between 1984 and 1997 was followed by a decrease in abundance of native perennial macroalgae such as Halidrys siliquosa. Although commonly associated with the expansion of exotic species, it is unknown whether such structural changes affect ecosystem properties such as the production and turnover of organic matter and associated nutrients. We hypothesized that S. muticum possesses ‘ephemeral’ traits relative to the species it has replaced, potentially leading to faster and more variable turnover of organic matter. The biomass dynamics of S. muticum and H. siliquosa was therefore compared in order to assess the potential effects of the expansion of Sargassum. The biomass of Sargassum was highly variable among seasons while that of Halidrys remained almost constant over the year. Sargassum grew faster than Halidrys and other perennial algae and the annual productivity was therefore high (P/B = 12 year−1) and exceeded that of Halidrys (P/B = 5 year−1) and most probably also that of other perennial algae in the system. The major grazer on macroalgae in Limfjorden, the sea urchin Psammechinus miliaris, preferred Sargassum to Halidrys, but estimated losses due to grazing were negligible for both species and most of the production may therefore enter the detritus pool. Detritus from Sargassum decomposed faster and more completely than detritus from Halidrys and other slow-growing perennial macrophytes. High productivity and fast decomposition suggest that the increasing dominance of S. muticum have increased turnover of organic matter and associated nutrients in Limfjorden and we suggest that the ecological effects of the invasion to some extent resemble those imposed by increasing dominance of ephemeral algae following eutrophication.

    L'étude a été menée pour déterminer l'ampleur de l'adaptation des pratiques agricoles par les petits exploitants en réponse au changement climatique dans les régions côtières du Bangladesh. Les données ont été collectées auprès de 80 petits exploitants sélectionnés au hasard dans le but d'identifier l'adaptation des pratiques agricoles, de déterminer les facteurs qui influencent l'adaptation des pratiques agricoles et de connaître les contraintes rencontrées par les agriculteurs dans l'adaptation des pratiques agricoles. Les résultats de l'étude ont révélé que la majorité (75 %) des petits exploitants agricoles ont fait une adaptation faible à moyenne des pratiques agricoles en réponse au changement climatique. L'analyse de corrélation a indiqué que parmi les caractéristiques socio-économiques sélectionnées, l'éducation du répondant, le revenu familial annuel, l'exposition à la communication, la formation agricole et la perception du changement climatique ont montré une relation positive et significative avec leur adaptation des pratiques agricoles. L'analyse de régression multiple par étapes a exploré que parmi six, quatre variables indépendantes finalement entrées dans le modèle et la contribution de ces facteurs (éducation, perception, exposition à la communication et formation) représentaient 88% de la variation totale de l'ampleur de l'adaptation des pratiques agricoles. Elle a été trouvée que la majorité (76 %) des petits exploitants agricoles avaient été confrontés à des contraintes élevées à moyennes dans l'adaptation des pratiques agricoles en réponse au changement climatique. El estudio se realizó para determinar el grado de adaptación de las prácticas agrícolas por parte de los pequeños agricultores en respuesta al cambio climático en las regiones costeras de Bangladesh. Los datos se recopilaron de 80 pequeños agricultores seleccionados al azar con los objetivos de identificar la adaptación de las prácticas agrícolas, determinar los factores que influyen en la adaptación de las prácticas agrícolas y descubrir las limitaciones que enfrentan los agricultores para adaptar las prácticas agrícolas. Los hallazgos del estudio revelaron que la mayoría (75%) de los pequeños agricultores hicieron una adaptación baja a media de las prácticas agrícolas en respuesta al cambio climático. El análisis de correlación indicó que entre las características socioeconómicas seleccionadas, la educación del encuestado, el ingreso familiar anual, la exposición a la comunicación, la capacitación agrícola y la percepción del cambio climático mostraron una relación positiva y significativa con su adaptación de las prácticas agrícolas. El análisis de regresión múltiple paso a paso exploró que entre seis, cuatro variables independientes finalmente entraron en el modelo y la contribución de estos factores (educación, percepción, exposición a la comunicación y capacitación) representaron el 88% de la variación total en el alcance de la adaptación de las prácticas agrícolas. Se encontró que la mayoría (76%) de los pequeños agricultores se habían enfrentado a limitaciones de altas a medias para adaptar las prácticas agrícolas en respuesta al cambio climático. The study was conducted to determine the extent of adaptation of farming practices by smallholder farmers in response to climate change in coastal regions of Bangladesh.The data were collected from 80 randomly selected smallholder farmers with the objectives to identify the adaptation of farming practices, to determine the factors those influence adaptation of farming practices and to find out the constraints faced by the farmers in adapting farming practices.The findings of the study revealed that majority (75%) of the smallholder farmers made low to medium adaptation of farming practices in response to climate change.Correlation analysis indicated that among the selected socio-economic characteristics, respondent's education, annual family income, communication exposure, agricultural training and perception of climate change showed positive and significant relationship with their adaptation of farming practices.Step-wise multiple regression analysis explored that amongst six, four independent variables finally entered into the model and contribution of these factors (education, perception, communication exposure and training) accounted for 88% of the total variation in the extent of adaptation of farming practices.It was found that majority (76%) of the smallholder farmers had faced high to medium constraints in adapting farm practices in response to climate change. أجريت الدراسة لتحديد مدى تكيف المزارعين أصحاب الحيازات الصغيرة مع الممارسات الزراعية استجابة لتغير المناخ في المناطق الساحلية في بنغلاديش. تم جمع البيانات من 80 مزارعًا من أصحاب الحيازات الصغيرة تم اختيارهم عشوائيًا بهدف تحديد تكيف الممارسات الزراعية، وتحديد العوامل التي تؤثر على تكيف الممارسات الزراعية ومعرفة القيود التي يواجهها المزارعون في تكييف الممارسات الزراعية. كشفت نتائج الدراسة أن الأغلبية (75 ٪) من المزارعين أصحاب الحيازات الصغيرة قاموا بتكيف منخفض إلى متوسط للممارسات الزراعية استجابة لتغير المناخ. أشار تحليل الارتباط إلى أنه من بين الخصائص الاجتماعية والاقتصادية المختارة، أظهر تعليم المستجيبين ودخل الأسرة السنوي والتعرض للاتصالات والتدريب الزراعي وإدراك تغير المناخ علاقة إيجابية وهامة مع تكيفهم مع الممارسات الزراعية. اكتشف تحليل الانحدار المتعدد أنه من بين ستة متغيرات، دخلت أربعة متغيرات مستقلة أخيرًا في نموذج ومساهمة هذه العوامل (التعليم والإدراك والتعرض للتواصل والتدريب) تمثل 88 ٪ من إجمالي التباين في مدى تكييف الممارسات الزراعية. أن غالبية المزارعين أصحاب الحيازات الصغيرة (76 ٪) واجهوا قيودًا عالية إلى متوسطة في تكييف الممارسات الزراعية استجابة لتغير المناخ.

    Literature review of the debate over the concept 'Sustainable Agruculture'. Agricultural sustainability have been thoroughly discussed in the literature as a multidimensional concept, of which the most important are; system describing or goal prescribing, the three dimensions of sustainability, the geographical extent of sustainability and the role of technology, and as a system approach to sustainability assessment. Several frameworks have been developed, each with a specified geographical extent and timeframe that makes assessment possible. Some scholars have begun to argue that, due to the terms’ ambiguity, it has become a cliché. However, despite its vagueness, the term is comprehensively used by institutions, such as the EU.

    This report seeks to investigate how cast seaweed in Sejerøbugten can be collected as a biomass to support Odsherred Biogas financially and support circular use of resources. This is investigated through a quantitative examining of cast seaweed from Sejerøbugten by measuring dry matter, organic matter, content of sand and biomethanepotential of five kinds of seaweeds found in Sejerøbugten. The quantitative examining is used in the thesis for calculations of the contribution margin of cast seaweed in Odsherred Biogas and to evaluate the influence of beach cleaning in the Natura 2000 area at Sejerøbugten. In addition, the current beach cleaning in Sejerøbugten is examined to gain knowledge about the existing approaches. The report concludes that the beach area with cast seaweed from 0-2 meters from the coast has the best qualities. The beach area has the highest biomethanepotential, a low amount of sand (TS/SI) and does minimal damage to the Natura 2000 area. Cast seaweed can support circular use of ressources by removing nutrients from the recipient and using them in new production chains through Odsherred Biogas. Cast seaweed from beach cleaning in Sejerøbugten can therefore support Odsherred Biogas financially and support a circular use of resources. Dette projekt undersøger, hvordan tang fra stranden i Sejerøbugten indsamles, så det som biomasse både kan understøtte Odsherred Biogasanlæg økonomisk og understøtte cirkulær ressourceanvendelse. I projektet blev udført målinger på tang fra Sejerøbugten for tørstof, organisk tørstof, sandindhold og metanpotentiale for at udregne dækningsbidraget for tangbiomasserne til Odsherred Biogasanlæg og for at vurdere påvirkningen af strandrensningen i Natura 2000-området i Sejerøbugten. Derudover undersøges den nuværende strandrensepraksis for at få en viden om eksisterende fremgangsmåder til strandrensning. Projektet konkluderer, at strandzonen med tang 0-2 m ude i vandet fra vandkanten samlet set havde den bedste kvalitet, idet den havde et gennemsnitligt højt metanpotentiale (115,8 Nml CH4/ g VS), en lav skadevirkning på det opsamlede område samt et lavt sandindhold (14 % SI/TS). Tang kan understøtte cirkulær ressourceanvendelse ved at fjerne næringsstoffer fra recipienten og indgå i nye produktionskæder ved anvendelsen af tangbiomassen i Odsherred Biogasanlæg, så længe der også er en interesse for strandrensning i Odsherred Kommune. Dermed understøtter strandrensningen økonomisk Odsherred Biogasanlæg samt sikrer en cirkulær ressourceanvendelse.

    The effect of ammonia of low and high concentrations on milled wheat straw on biogas production was investigated. Aqueous ammonia was applied to milled wheat straw in a pretreatment process to assess improvement in biogas production through anaerobic digestion. Two different concentrations, 4% (low) and 15% (high), of ammonia were applied to mechanically pretreated wheat straw for 48 hours at 50 oC. Fermented sludge, obtained from Lemvig Biogasanlæg, was used as inoculum and 12 reactors were loaded with a mix of inoculum and pretreated wheat straw in a VS ratio of 4:1. Milled wheat straw pretreated with 15% ammonia produced the highest average yield with 26.5 ml per gVS-1 and a cumulative output of 367ml gVS-1 compared with an average production of 19 ml per gVS-1 and a cumulative output of 289 ml gVS-1 of the 4% ammonia pretreated milled wheat straw. Both produced more than the milling-only pretreatment which yielded 12.8ml per gVS-1. with a cumulative 192 ml gVS-1. The results indicate an increase in production of biogas per gVS-1 for pretreatments using higher concentrations of ammonia. Based on the differences alone it seems that the ammonia pretreatment is effective at increasing biogas yield in a lab setting, however, no statistical significance was found for the data collected with regards to the effect of the ammonia pretreatment on biogas production (p=0.012). A second experiment was conducted examining the physical effects of the ammonia pretreatment which strong suggest that ammonia pretreatment has an effect on the sinkability of wheat straw, eliminating the scum layer formed under usual circumstances by wheat straw added to manure. A correlation between ammonia concentration applied to the wheat straw and sinkability was observed.

    Sustainable agricultural education is a fundamental base for the sustainable development of the agri-food systems. Sustainable education should provide the necessary skills to the practical world. This paper is focused on skills and competences required by the agri-food stakeholders for their current work and for future sustainable development around the world. An online survey was disseminated for data collection, and quantitative and qualitative analyses were employed to understand the impact of the demographic factors on the variety of skills mentioned by the different stakeholders. As a result, according to all of the stakeholders, the skills of navigating in a changing world, networking and strategic development are relevant for their current work, and technical skills were mentioned as relevant for future sustainable development. The age factor, rather than geography and gender, was found to have a stronger impact on defining the aforementioned skills.

In Somalia, challenges related to energy access is influenced by both weather and climate extremes and associated conflict. The objective of this article is to gain an improved understanding of these risks and challenges, which are faced by the most vulnerable populations in the country. In particular, cooking energy-related challenges faced by households affected by weather and climate extremes and conflicts include protection risks, malnutrition, health risks, environmental degradation and heightened tension and conflict between social groups. Interventions to address these issues should focus on both fuel supply and fuel demand as well as on improving the livelihoods of affected populations. In the aftermath of an extreme weather event it is recommended that assessments of the energy needs of all affected populations, including both hosts and Internally Displaced People (IDPs), be conducted. Post-disaster support should include the promotion of energy-efficient technologies for cooking as well as alternative sources of fuel where available, including non-wood based renewable energy. The implementation of a field inventory to assess the status of natural resources in areas vulnerable to climate impacts could help to determine woody biomass trends and enable the development of ecosystem restoration plans. These could include provisions for the establishment of woodlots and agro-forestry, thus building resilience to environmental degradation while maintaining woody biomass resources in and around displacement camps.     The need for enhanced environmental planning and management for highland aquatic resources is described and a rationale for integrated action planning is presented. Past action planning initiatives for biodiversity conservation and wetland management are reviewed. A reflective account is given of integrated action planning from five sites in China, India and Vietnam. Eight planning phases are described encompassing: stakeholder assessment and partner selection; rapport building and agreement on collaboration; integrated biodiversity, ecosystem services, livelihoods and policy assessment; problem analysis and target setting; strategic planning; planning and organisation of activities; coordinated implementation and monitoring; evaluation and revised target setting. The scope and targeting of actions are evaluated using the Driving forces, Pressures, State, Impacts and Responses framework and compatibility with biodiversity conservation and socio-economic development objectives are assessed. Criteria to evaluate the quality of planning processes are proposed. Principles for integrated action planning elaborated here should enable stakeholders to formulate plans to reconcile biodiversity conservation with the wise use of wetlands.

    Globally, to ensure food security bio-based fertilizers must replace a percentage of chemical fertilizers. Such replacement must be deemed sustainable from agronomic and greenhouse gas (GHG) emission perspectives. For agronomic performance several controlled protocols are in place but not for testing GHG emissions. Herein, a pre-screening tool is presented to examine GHG emissions from bio-waste as fertilizers. The various treatments examined are as follows: soil with added mineral nitrogen (N, 140 kg N ha-1) fertilizer (MF), the same amount of MF combined with dairy processing sludge (DS), sludge-derived biochar produced at 450 °C (BC450) and 700 °C (BC700) and untreated control (CK). These treatments were combined with Danish (sandy loam) or Irish (clay loam) soils, with carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions and soil inorganic-N contents measured on selected days. During the incubation, biochar mitigated N2O emissions by regulating denitrification. BC450 reduced N2O emissions from Danish soil by 95.5% and BC700 by 97.7% compared to emissions with the sludge application, and for Irish soil, the N2O reductions were 93.6% and 32.3%, respectively. For both soils, biochar reduced CO2 emissions by 50% as compared to the sludge. The lower N2O reduction potential of BC700 for Irish soil could be due to the high soil organic carbon and clay content and pyrolysis temperature. For the same reasons emissions of N2O and CO2 from Irish soil were significantly higher than from Danish soil. The temporal variation in N2O emissions was correlated with soil inorganic-N contents. The CH4 emissions across treatments were not significantly different. This study developed a simple and cost-effective pre-screening method to evaluate the GHG emission potential of new bio-waste before its field application and guide the development of national emission inventories, towards achieving the goals of circular economy and the European Green Deal.

    During farming demonstrations, peer-to-peer learning is known to be more effective than technology transfer when encouraging farmers to consider adopting more sustainable farming practices. Interactive knowledge creation has the potential to create a stimulating peer-learning environment focusing on the use of hands-on activities, knowledge scaffolding, discussions and negotiation. This study investigated how insight can be gained about the interactive knowledge creation that occurs during farming demonstrations by monitoring and evaluating a diverse sample of farming demonstrations in Belgium, Spain and Denmark via surveys and observations originally designed for the AgriDemo-F2F project. The study found that the selected monitoring tools provided insight about how participants experienced specific interactive knowledge creation. However, several stumbling blocks were also identified in using the proposed tools to monitor these learning processes, including the monitoring of abstract concepts and the reluctance among farmers to respond to self-administered open-ended survey questions. Based on these learning points, several proposals were made to improve the monitoring process of interactive knowledge creation. This study confirms that the improved understanding of learning practices and their impact on actual change presents a challenge, but it is essential if the adoption of sustainable farming practices is to be increased.

    Abstract The expansion of Sargassum muticum in the Danish estuary Limfjorden between 1984 and 1997 was followed by a decrease in abundance of native perennial macroalgae such as Halidrys siliquosa. Although commonly associated with the expansion of exotic species, it is unknown whether such structural changes affect ecosystem properties such as the production and turnover of organic matter and associated nutrients. We hypothesized that S. muticum possesses ‘ephemeral’ traits relative to the species it has replaced, potentially leading to faster and more variable turnover of organic matter. The biomass dynamics of S. muticum and H. siliquosa was therefore compared in order to assess the potential effects of the expansion of Sargassum. The biomass of Sargassum was highly variable among seasons while that of Halidrys remained almost constant over the year. Sargassum grew faster than Halidrys and other perennial algae and the annual productivity was therefore high (P/B = 12 year−1) and exceeded that of Halidrys (P/B = 5 year−1) and most probably also that of other perennial algae in the system. The major grazer on macroalgae in Limfjorden, the sea urchin Psammechinus miliaris, preferred Sargassum to Halidrys, but estimated losses due to grazing were negligible for both species and most of the production may therefore enter the detritus pool. Detritus from Sargassum decomposed faster and more completely than detritus from Halidrys and other slow-growing perennial macrophytes. High productivity and fast decomposition suggest that the increasing dominance of S. muticum have increased turnover of organic matter and associated nutrients in Limfjorden and we suggest that the ecological effects of the invasion to some extent resemble those imposed by increasing dominance of ephemeral algae following eutrophication.

    L'étude a été menée pour déterminer l'ampleur de l'adaptation des pratiques agricoles par les petits exploitants en réponse au changement climatique dans les régions côtières du Bangladesh. Les données ont été collectées auprès de 80 petits exploitants sélectionnés au hasard dans le but d'identifier l'adaptation des pratiques agricoles, de déterminer les facteurs qui influencent l'adaptation des pratiques agricoles et de connaître les contraintes rencontrées par les agriculteurs dans l'adaptation des pratiques agricoles. Les résultats de l'étude ont révélé que la majorité (75 %) des petits exploitants agricoles ont fait une adaptation faible à moyenne des pratiques agricoles en réponse au changement climatique. L'analyse de corrélation a indiqué que parmi les caractéristiques socio-économiques sélectionnées, l'éducation du répondant, le revenu familial annuel, l'exposition à la communication, la formation agricole et la perception du changement climatique ont montré une relation positive et significative avec leur adaptation des pratiques agricoles. L'analyse de régression multiple par étapes a exploré que parmi six, quatre variables indépendantes finalement entrées dans le modèle et la contribution de ces facteurs (éducation, perception, exposition à la communication et formation) représentaient 88% de la variation totale de l'ampleur de l'adaptation des pratiques agricoles. Elle a été trouvée que la majorité (76 %) des petits exploitants agricoles avaient été confrontés à des contraintes élevées à moyennes dans l'adaptation des pratiques agricoles en réponse au changement climatique. El estudio se realizó para determinar el grado de adaptación de las prácticas agrícolas por parte de los pequeños agricultores en respuesta al cambio climático en las regiones costeras de Bangladesh. Los datos se recopilaron de 80 pequeños agricultores seleccionados al azar con los objetivos de identificar la adaptación de las prácticas agrícolas, determinar los factores que influyen en la adaptación de las prácticas agrícolas y descubrir las limitaciones que enfrentan los agricultores para adaptar las prácticas agrícolas. Los hallazgos del estudio revelaron que la mayoría (75%) de los pequeños agricultores hicieron una adaptación baja a media de las prácticas agrícolas en respuesta al cambio climático. El análisis de correlación indicó que entre las características socioeconómicas seleccionadas, la educación del encuestado, el ingreso familiar anual, la exposición a la comunicación, la capacitación agrícola y la percepción del cambio climático mostraron una relación positiva y significativa con su adaptación de las prácticas agrícolas. El análisis de regresión múltiple paso a paso exploró que entre seis, cuatro variables independientes finalmente entraron en el modelo y la contribución de estos factores (educación, percepción, exposición a la comunicación y capacitación) representaron el 88% de la variación total en el alcance de la adaptación de las prácticas agrícolas. The study was conducted to determine the extent of adaptation of farming practices by smallholder farmers in response to climate change in coastal regions of Bangladesh.The data were collected from 80 randomly selected smallholder farmers with the objectives to identify the adaptation of farming practices, to determine the factors those influence adaptation of farming practices and to find out the constraints faced by the farmers in adapting farming practices.The findings of the study revealed that majority (75%) of the smallholder farmers made low to medium adaptation of farming practices in response to climate change.Correlation analysis indicated that among the selected socio-economic characteristics, respondent's education, annual family income, communication exposure, agricultural training and perception of climate change showed positive and significant relationship with their adaptation of farming practices.Step-wise multiple regression analysis explored that amongst six, four independent variables finally entered into the model and contribution of these factors (education, perception, communication exposure and training) accounted for 88% of the total variation in the extent of adaptation of farming practices.It was found that majority (76%) of the smallholder farmers had faced high to medium constraints in adapting farm practices in response to climate change. أجريت الدراسة لتحديد مدى تكيف المزارعين أصحاب الحيازات الصغيرة مع الممارسات الزراعية استجابة لتغير المناخ في المناطق الساحلية في بنغلاديش. تم جمع البيانات من 80 مزارعًا من أصحاب الحيازات الصغيرة تم اختيارهم عشوائيًا بهدف تحديد تكيف الممارسات الزراعية، وتحديد العوامل التي تؤثر على تكيف الممارسات الزراعية ومعرفة القيود التي يواجهها المزارعون في تكييف الممارسات الزراعية. كشفت نتائج الدراسة أن الأغلبية (75 ٪) من المزارعين أصحاب الحيازات الصغيرة قاموا بتكيف منخفض إلى متوسط للممارسات الزراعية استجابة لتغير المناخ. أشار تحليل الارتباط إلى أنه من بين الخصائص الاجتماعية والاقتصادية المختارة، أظهر تعليم المستجيبين ودخل الأسرة السنوي والتعرض للاتصالات والتدريب الزراعي وإدراك تغير المناخ علاقة إيجابية وهامة مع تكيفهم مع الممارسات الزراعية. اكتشف تحليل الانحدار المتعدد أنه من بين ستة متغيرات، دخلت أربعة متغيرات مستقلة أخيرًا في نموذج ومساهمة هذه العوامل (التعليم والإدراك والتعرض للتواصل والتدريب) تمثل 88 ٪ من إجمالي التباين في مدى تكييف الممارسات الزراعية. أن غالبية المزارعين أصحاب الحيازات الصغيرة (76 ٪) واجهوا قيودًا عالية إلى متوسطة في تكييف الممارسات الزراعية استجابة لتغير المناخ.

    Literature review of the debate over the concept 'Sustainable Agruculture'. Agricultural sustainability have been thoroughly discussed in the literature as a multidimensional concept, of which the most important are; system describing or goal prescribing, the three dimensions of sustainability, the geographical extent of sustainability and the role of technology, and as a system approach to sustainability assessment. Several frameworks have been developed, each with a specified geographical extent and timeframe that makes assessment possible. Some scholars have begun to argue that, due to the terms’ ambiguity, it has become a cliché. However, despite its vagueness, the term is comprehensively used by institutions, such as the EU.

    This report seeks to investigate how cast seaweed in Sejerøbugten can be collected as a biomass to support Odsherred Biogas financially and support circular use of resources. This is investigated through a quantitative examining of cast seaweed from Sejerøbugten by measuring dry matter, organic matter, content of sand and biomethanepotential of five kinds of seaweeds found in Sejerøbugten. The quantitative examining is used in the thesis for calculations of the contribution margin of cast seaweed in Odsherred Biogas and to evaluate the influence of beach cleaning in the Natura 2000 area at Sejerøbugten. In addition, the current beach cleaning in Sejerøbugten is examined to gain knowledge about the existing approaches. The report concludes that the beach area with cast seaweed from 0-2 meters from the coast has the best qualities. The beach area has the highest biomethanepotential, a low amount of sand (TS/SI) and does minimal damage to the Natura 2000 area. Cast seaweed can support circular use of ressources by removing nutrients from the recipient and using them in new production chains through Odsherred Biogas. Cast seaweed from beach cleaning in Sejerøbugten can therefore support Odsherred Biogas financially and support a circular use of resources. Dette projekt undersøger, hvordan tang fra stranden i Sejerøbugten indsamles, så det som biomasse både kan understøtte Odsherred Biogasanlæg økonomisk og understøtte cirkulær ressourceanvendelse. I projektet blev udført målinger på tang fra Sejerøbugten for tørstof, organisk tørstof, sandindhold og metanpotentiale for at udregne dækningsbidraget for tangbiomasserne til Odsherred Biogasanlæg og for at vurdere påvirkningen af strandrensningen i Natura 2000-området i Sejerøbugten. Derudover undersøges den nuværende strandrensepraksis for at få en viden om eksisterende fremgangsmåder til strandrensning. Projektet konkluderer, at strandzonen med tang 0-2 m ude i vandet fra vandkanten samlet set havde den bedste kvalitet, idet den havde et gennemsnitligt højt metanpotentiale (115,8 Nml CH4/ g VS), en lav skadevirkning på det opsamlede område samt et lavt sandindhold (14 % SI/TS). Tang kan understøtte cirkulær ressourceanvendelse ved at fjerne næringsstoffer fra recipienten og indgå i nye produktionskæder ved anvendelsen af tangbiomassen i Odsherred Biogasanlæg, så længe der også er en interesse for strandrensning i Odsherred Kommune. Dermed understøtter strandrensningen økonomisk Odsherred Biogasanlæg samt sikrer en cirkulær ressourceanvendelse.

    The effect of ammonia of low and high concentrations on milled wheat straw on biogas production was investigated. Aqueous ammonia was applied to milled wheat straw in a pretreatment process to assess improvement in biogas production through anaerobic digestion. Two different concentrations, 4% (low) and 15% (high), of ammonia were applied to mechanically pretreated wheat straw for 48 hours at 50 oC. Fermented sludge, obtained from Lemvig Biogasanlæg, was used as inoculum and 12 reactors were loaded with a mix of inoculum and pretreated wheat straw in a VS ratio of 4:1. Milled wheat straw pretreated with 15% ammonia produced the highest average yield with 26.5 ml per gVS-1 and a cumulative output of 367ml gVS-1 compared with an average production of 19 ml per gVS-1 and a cumulative output of 289 ml gVS-1 of the 4% ammonia pretreated milled wheat straw. Both produced more than the milling-only pretreatment which yielded 12.8ml per gVS-1. with a cumulative 192 ml gVS-1. The results indicate an increase in production of biogas per gVS-1 for pretreatments using higher concentrations of ammonia. Based on the differences alone it seems that the ammonia pretreatment is effective at increasing biogas yield in a lab setting, however, no statistical significance was found for the data collected with regards to the effect of the ammonia pretreatment on biogas production (p=0.012). A second experiment was conducted examining the physical effects of the ammonia pretreatment which strong suggest that ammonia pretreatment has an effect on the sinkability of wheat straw, eliminating the scum layer formed under usual circumstances by wheat straw added to manure. A correlation between ammonia concentration applied to the wheat straw and sinkability was observed.

    Sustainable agricultural education is a fundamental base for the sustainable development of the agri-food systems. Sustainable education should provide the necessary skills to the practical world. This paper is focused on skills and competences required by the agri-food stakeholders for their current work and for future sustainable development around the world. An online survey was disseminated for data collection, and quantitative and qualitative analyses were employed to understand the impact of the demographic factors on the variety of skills mentioned by the different stakeholders. As a result, according to all of the stakeholders, the skills of navigating in a changing world, networking and strategic development are relevant for their current work, and technical skills were mentioned as relevant for future sustainable development. The age factor, rather than geography and gender, was found to have a stronger impact on defining the aforementioned skills.

In Somalia, challenges related to energy access is influenced by both weather and climate extremes and associated conflict. The objective of this article is to gain an improved understanding of these risks and challenges, which are faced by the most vulnerable populations in the country. In particular, cooking energy-related challenges faced by households affected by weather and climate extremes and conflicts include protection risks, malnutrition, health risks, environmental degradation and heightened tension and conflict between social groups. Interventions to address these issues should focus on both fuel supply and fuel demand as well as on improving the livelihoods of affected populations. In the aftermath of an extreme weather event it is recommended that assessments of the energy needs of all affected populations, including both hosts and Internally Displaced People (IDPs), be conducted. Post-disaster support should include the promotion of energy-efficient technologies for cooking as well as alternative sources of fuel where available, including non-wood based renewable energy. The implementation of a field inventory to assess the status of natural resources in areas vulnerable to climate impacts could help to determine woody biomass trends and enable the development of ecosystem restoration plans. These could include provisions for the establishment of woodlots and agro-forestry, thus building resilience to environmental degradation while maintaining woody biomass resources in and around displacement camps.     The need for enhanced environmental planning and management for highland aquatic resources is described and a rationale for integrated action planning is presented. Past action planning initiatives for biodiversity conservation and wetland management are reviewed. A reflective account is given of integrated action planning from five sites in China, India and Vietnam. Eight planning phases are described encompassing: stakeholder assessment and partner selection; rapport building and agreement on collaboration; integrated biodiversity, ecosystem services, livelihoods and policy assessment; problem analysis and target setting; strategic planning; planning and organisation of activities; coordinated implementation and monitoring; evaluation and revised target setting. The scope and targeting of actions are evaluated using the Driving forces, Pressures, State, Impacts and Responses framework and compatibility with biodiversity conservation and socio-economic development objectives are assessed. Criteria to evaluate the quality of planning processes are proposed. Principles for integrated action planning elaborated here should enable stakeholders to formulate plans to reconcile biodiversity conservation with the wise use of wetlands.

    Globally, to ensure food security bio-based fertilizers must replace a percentage of chemical fertilizers. Such replacement must be deemed sustainable from agronomic and greenhouse gas (GHG) emission perspectives. For agronomic performance several controlled protocols are in place but not for testing GHG emissions. Herein, a pre-screening tool is presented to examine GHG emissions from bio-waste as fertilizers. The various treatments examined are as follows: soil with added mineral nitrogen (N, 140 kg N ha-1) fertilizer (MF), the same amount of MF combined with dairy processing sludge (DS), sludge-derived biochar produced at 450 °C (BC450) and 700 °C (BC700) and untreated control (CK). These treatments were combined with Danish (sandy loam) or Irish (clay loam) soils, with carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions and soil inorganic-N contents measured on selected days. During the incubation, biochar mitigated N2O emissions by regulating denitrification. BC450 reduced N2O emissions from Danish soil by 95.5% and BC700 by 97.7% compared to emissions with the sludge application, and for Irish soil, the N2O reductions were 93.6% and 32.3%, respectively. For both soils, biochar reduced CO2 emissions by 50% as compared to the sludge. The lower N2O reduction potential of BC700 for Irish soil could be due to the high soil organic carbon and clay content and pyrolysis temperature. For the same reasons emissions of N2O and CO2 from Irish soil were significantly higher than from Danish soil. The temporal variation in N2O emissions was correlated with soil inorganic-N contents. The CH4 emissions across treatments were not significantly different. This study developed a simple and cost-effective pre-screening method to evaluate the GHG emission potential of new bio-waste before its field application and guide the development of national emission inventories, towards achieving the goals of circular economy and the European Green Deal.

    During farming demonstrations, peer-to-peer learning is known to be more effective than technology transfer when encouraging farmers to consider adopting more sustainable farming practices. Interactive knowledge creation has the potential to create a stimulating peer-learning environment focusing on the use of hands-on activities, knowledge scaffolding, discussions and negotiation. This study investigated how insight can be gained about the interactive knowledge creation that occurs during farming demonstrations by monitoring and evaluating a diverse sample of farming demonstrations in Belgium, Spain and Denmark via surveys and observations originally designed for the AgriDemo-F2F project. The study found that the selected monitoring tools provided insight about how participants experienced specific interactive knowledge creation. However, several stumbling blocks were also identified in using the proposed tools to monitor these learning processes, including the monitoring of abstract concepts and the reluctance among farmers to respond to self-administered open-ended survey questions. Based on these learning points, several proposals were made to improve the monitoring process of interactive knowledge creation. This study confirms that the improved understanding of learning practices and their impact on actual change presents a challenge, but it is essential if the adoption of sustainable farming practices is to be increased.
