The immobilisation of the iron-oxidising bacteria Thiobacillus ferrooxidans on nickel alloy fibre as support is described. This matrix showed promise for application in iron oxidation under strongly acidic conditions. The influence on the colonisation process of T. ferrooxidans exerted by the initial pH of the medium and by temperature has also been studied. Results showed that immobilisation of T. ferrooxidans cells was affected by changes of temperature between 30 degrees C and 40 degrees C and in pH from 1.4 to 2.0.

For this reason, we propose and analyse an alternative means of actuation: Controlled Passive Actuation. Controlled Passive Actuation aims at reducing the energy flow through electric actuators by actuating with a combination of an energy storage element and a Continuously Variable Transmission. In this work, we present a method where we apply a Continuously Variable Transmission with a storage element in the form of a mass to change the state of another mass (“the load”). An abstraction layer is created to abstract the inertia-driven Controlled Passive Actuation to a source of effort, a force actuator. On this abstracted system, feedback control can be applied to achieve control goals such as path tracking. With simulations and experiments, we show that inertia-driven Controlled Passive Actuation can be used to control the state of an (inertial) load. The experimental results show that the performance of the system is affected by the internal dynamics and limited rate of change of the transmission ratio of the Continuously Variable Transmission.

Empirical greenhouse gas (GHG) flux estimates from diverse peatlands are required in order to derive emission factors for managed peatlands. This study on a drained fen peatland quantified the annual GHG balance (Carbon dioxide (CO2), nitrous oxide (N2O), methane (CH4), and C exported in crop yield) from spring barley (SB) and reed canary grass (RCG) using static opaque chambers for GHG flux measurements and biomass yield for indirectly estimating gross primary production (GPP). Estimates of ecosystem respiration (ER) and GPP were compared with more advanced but costly and labor-intensive dynamic chamber studies. Annual GHG balance for the two cropping systems was 4.0 ± 0.7 and 8.1 ± 0.2 Mg CO2-Ceq ha(-1) from SB and RCG, respectively (mean ± standard error, n = 3). Annual CH4 emissions were negligible (<0.006 Mg CO2-Ceq ha(-1)), and N2O emissions contributed only 4-13 % of the full GHG balance (0.5 and 0.3 Mg CO2-Ceq ha(-1) for SB and RCG, respectively). The statistical significance of low CH4 and N2O fluxes was evaluated by a simulation procedure which showed that most of CH4 fluxes were within the range that could arise from random variation associated with actual zero-flux situations. ER measured by static chamber and dynamic chamber methods was similar, particularly when using nonlinear regression techniques for flux calculations. A comparison of GPP derived from aboveground biomass and from measuring net ecosystem exchange (NEE) showed that GPP estimation from biomass might be useful, or serve as validation, for more advanced flux measurement methods. In conclusion, combining static opaque chambers for measuring ER of CO2 and CH4 and N2O fluxes with biomass yield for GPP estimation worked well in the drained fen peatland cropped to SB and RCG and presented a valid alternative to estimating the full GHG balance by dynamic chambers.

Most of the recent studies, performed in order to estimate the potential value of biomass for energy production, were done on common biomass resources such as corn, wheat, sunflower, barley and oats. Although tobacco stalks are rarely or almost not used for this purpose, according to their chemical composition and heating value, they can be classified as non-toxic agricultural waste, which makes them a renewable energy source. According to the statistics in agricultural production, Serbia has a great potential in tobacco stalks which are treated as agricultural waste and they are not used for energetic purposes. This paper deals with two common types of large leaves tobacco stalks in this region; Virginia and Burley, as a potential renewable energy source. The heating values were calculated according to the elemental chemical composition and lignin content, and compared with other known agricultural waste. Various equations for high heating value calculation were taken in account in order to present tobacco stalks as renewable energy source. Results of analysis showed good agreement of tobacco stalks heating values in comparison with other crops, and does not deviate significantly from other agricultural waste.

In this communication, pretreatment of the anaerobically digested (AD) manure and the application of the pretreated AD manure as liquid medium for the simultaneous saccharification and fermentation (SSF) were described. Furthermore, fermentation of pretreated maize silage and wheat straw was investigated using 2l bioreactors. Wet oxidation performed for 20 min at 121 degrees C was found as the most suitable pretreatment conditions for AD manure. High ammonia concentration and significant amount of macro- and micro-nutrients in the AD manure had a positive influence on the ethanol fermentation. No extra nitrogen source was needed in the fermentation broth. It was shown that the AD manure could successfully substitute process water in SSF of pretreated lignocellulosic fibres. Theoretical ethanol yields of 82% were achieved, giving 30.8 kg ethanol per 100 kg dry mass of maize silage.

The studied biomasses were rice husk, peanut shell and wheat straw. The effect of pyrolysis temperature over solid (bio-char), liquid (bio-oil) and gas (bio-gas) fractions weight yields were evaluated for each biomass, in the range of 350-650 °C. The maximum yield of bio-oil was obtained at 550 °C for rice husk (45 wt%) and wheat straw (58 wt%), and at 500 °C for peanut shells (51 wt%). At those temperatures, the data recorded the smallest spread around the mean. Different characterization techniques of raw biomass were reported, namely, thermal behavior; proximate and ultimate analysis; content of Ca, Al, K, Si and Fe; and hemicellulose, cellulose and lignin composition. Bio-oils characterization included water content and chemical compounds identification. Furthermore, bio-char HHV and BET surface area were measured. Rice husk bio-oil showed 21% selectivity towards furans of which 75% corresponded to furfural and 5-HMF. Peanut shell bio-char presented the highest Higher Heating Value (7250 kcal/kg) and BET surface area (215 m2/g). In addition, co-pyrolysis reactions and the synergistic effects over obtained products completed this study. Co-pyrolysis bio-oils yields varied between 41 and 46 wt%, for all the mixtures. Bio-oil water content decreased up to 15% for rice husk mixed with peanut shell or wheat straw. Moreover, 5-HMF was detected in all bio-oils, and furfural selectivity was higher than 5% in the three mixtures investigated.

MC1 and to analyze the differential protein expression profile in the presence of this metal for the identification of proteins repressed or overexpressed. In the presence of Cr(VI) but in the absence of sulfate ions, bacterial growth was negligible, showing the Cr(VI) toxicity for this bacterium. However, the sulfate presence stimulated bacterium growth and Cr(VI) removal, regardless of its concentrations. Streptomyces sp. MC1 showed ability to remove chromium and sulfate simultaneously. Also, the sulfate presence favored the decrease of total chromium concentration from supernatants reaching a decrease of 50% at 48 h. In presence of chromium, seven proteins were down‐expressed and showed homology to proteins involved in protein biosynthesis, energy production and free radicals detoxification while two proteins involved in oxidation‐reduction processes identified as dihydrolipoamide dehydrogenase and S‐adenosyl‐l‐methionine synthase were overexpressed.

A huge amount of palm waste generated daily represents a problematic high-moisture waste to be disposed of, yet it also represents a promising biomass resource to be transformed into a value-added product. A single-mode microwave hydrothermal carbonization process incorporating steam purging was developed and utilised to convert high-moisture palm waste into hydrochar over a range of process temperatures from 150 to 300 °C. The microwave hydrothermal carbonization recorded a shorter process duration (10 min) and prevented the occurrence of hot spots within the reactor. The resulting hydrochar showed up to 94.3 wt% of mass yield, 69.2 wt% of fixed carbon, and 412.3 m2/g of surface area. The subsequent application of the hydrochar in de-chlorination of domestic water demonstrated an impressive removal performance of up to 98.9% of free chlorine, exhibiting 435 min of breakthrough time, and 40.0 mg/g of bed capacity in continuous column operation. The results show great promise of microwave hydrothermal carbonization as a desirable approach to produce desirable hydrochar for de-chlorination application.

Castor bean (Ricinus communis L.), is a plant belonging to the Euphorbiaceae family and one of the most interesting oil seed crops to develop and study in the Mediterranean basin. The main trait that enhances castor cultivation is its oil content, which is really high, around 40-55% depending on the genotype and area of cultivation. Today’s panorama and policies are pushing towards the exploitation of this crop because it is expected to be a valid alternative to fossil fuels for the production of biofuels, such as biodiesel, and for the valorization and use of abandoned and degraded land. Field experiment was conducted for analyzing the oil yield and oil content of four dwarf hybrids of castor, compared to a local genotype, selected by the University of Catania, Italy. The aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of different sowing dates on the oil content and oil yield of castor seeds. The analysis was conducted on primary and secondary raceme. The oil content was higher in the dwarf hybrids for the primary racemes, whereas for the secondary raceme the most productive one, in terms of oil content was GT. By analyzing also the oil yield (resulted from the multiplication of the oil content by the oil yield), the most productive genotype for the oil yield on average was G4, whereas SW3 was the sowing date with the highest value. Nevertheless, the combination genotype x sowing date had higher result for G3 SW3. Among the parameters studied, the genotype G2 shown a low level of tolerance to the low temperatures. Estimates of ecosystem respiration (ER) and GPP were compared with more advanced but costly and labor-intensive dynamic chamber studies. Annual GHG balance for the two cropping systems was 4.0 ± 0.7 and 8.1 ± 0.2 Mg CO2-Ceq ha(-1) from SB and RCG, respectively (mean ± standard error, n = 3). Annual CH4 emissions were negligible (<0.006 Mg CO2-Ceq ha(-1)), and N2O emissions contributed only 4-13 % of the full GHG balance (0.5 and 0.3 Mg CO2-Ceq ha(-1) for SB and RCG, respectively). The statistical significance of low CH4 and N2O fluxes was evaluated by a simulation procedure which showed that most of CH4 fluxes were within the range that could arise from random variation associated with actual zero-flux situations. ER measured by static chamber and dynamic chamber methods was similar, particularly when using nonlinear regression techniques for flux calculations. A comparison of GPP derived from aboveground biomass and from measuring net ecosystem exchange (NEE) showed that GPP estimation from biomass might be useful, or serve as validation, for more advanced flux measurement methods. In conclusion, combining static opaque chambers for measuring ER of CO2 and CH4 and N2O fluxes with biomass yield for GPP estimation worked well in the drained fen peatland cropped to SB and RCG and presented a valid alternative to estimating the full GHG balance by dynamic chambers.

Most of the recent studies, performed in order to estimate the potential value of biomass for energy production, were done on common biomass resources such as corn, wheat, sunflower, barley and oats. Although tobacco stalks are rarely or almost not used for this purpose, according to their chemical composition and heating value, they can be classified as non-toxic agricultural waste, which makes them a renewable energy source. According to the statistics in agricultural production, Serbia has a great potential in tobacco stalks which are treated as agricultural waste and they are not used for energetic purposes. This paper deals with two common types of large leaves tobacco stalks in this region; Virginia and Burley, as a potential renewable energy source. The heating values were calculated according to the elemental chemical composition and lignin content, and compared with other known agricultural waste. Various equations for high heating value calculation were taken in account in order to present tobacco stalks as renewable energy source. Results of analysis showed good agreement of tobacco stalks heating values in comparison with other crops, and does not deviate significantly from other agricultural waste.

In this communication, pretreatment of the anaerobically digested (AD) manure and the application of the pretreated AD manure as liquid medium for the simultaneous saccharification and fermentation (SSF) were described. Furthermore, fermentation of pretreated maize silage and wheat straw was investigated using 2l bioreactors. Wet oxidation performed for 20 min at 121 degrees C was found as the most suitable pretreatment conditions for AD manure. High ammonia concentration and significant amount of macro- and micro-nutrients in the AD manure had a positive influence on the ethanol fermentation. No extra nitrogen source was needed in the fermentation broth. It was shown that the AD manure could successfully substitute process water in SSF of pretreated lignocellulosic fibres. Theoretical ethanol yields of 82% were achieved, giving 30.8 kg ethanol per 100 kg dry mass of maize silage.

The studied biomasses were rice husk, peanut shell and wheat straw. The effect of pyrolysis temperature over solid (bio-char), liquid (bio-oil) and gas (bio-gas) fractions weight yields were evaluated for each biomass, in the range of 350-650 °C. The maximum yield of bio-oil was obtained at 550 °C for rice husk (45 wt%) and wheat straw (58 wt%), and at 500 °C for peanut shells (51 wt%). At those temperatures, the data recorded the smallest spread around the mean. Different characterization techniques of raw biomass were reported, namely, thermal behavior; proximate and ultimate analysis; content of Ca, Al, K, Si and Fe; and hemicellulose, cellulose and lignin composition. Bio-oils characterization included water content and chemical compounds identification. Furthermore, bio-char HHV and BET surface area were measured. Rice husk bio-oil showed 21% selectivity towards furans of which 75% corresponded to furfural and 5-HMF. Peanut shell bio-char presented the highest Higher Heating Value (7250 kcal/kg) and BET surface area (215 m2/g). In addition, co-pyrolysis reactions and the synergistic effects over obtained products completed this study. Co-pyrolysis bio-oils yields varied between 41 and 46 wt%, for all the mixtures. Bio-oil water content decreased up to 15% for rice husk mixed with peanut shell or wheat straw. Moreover, 5-HMF was detected in all bio-oils, and furfural selectivity was higher than 5% in the three mixtures investigated.

MC1 and to analyze the differential protein expression profile in the presence of this metal for the identification of proteins repressed or overexpressed. In the presence of Cr(VI) but in the absence of sulfate ions, bacterial growth was negligible, showing the Cr(VI) toxicity for this bacterium. However, the sulfate presence stimulated bacterium growth and Cr(VI) removal, regardless of its concentrations. Streptomyces sp. MC1 showed ability to remove chromium and sulfate simultaneously. Also, the sulfate presence favored the decrease of total chromium concentration from supernatants reaching a decrease of 50% at 48 h. In presence of chromium, seven proteins were down‐expressed and showed homology to proteins involved in protein biosynthesis, energy production and free radicals detoxification while two proteins involved in oxidation‐reduction processes identified as dihydrolipoamide dehydrogenase and S‐adenosyl‐l‐methionine synthase were overexpressed.

A huge amount of palm waste generated daily represents a problematic high-moisture waste to be disposed of, yet it also represents a promising biomass resource to be transformed into a value-added product. A single-mode microwave hydrothermal carbonization process incorporating steam purging was developed and utilised to convert high-moisture palm waste into hydrochar over a range of process temperatures from 150 to 300 °C. The microwave hydrothermal carbonization recorded a shorter process duration (10 min) and prevented the occurrence of hot spots within the reactor. The resulting hydrochar showed up to 94.3 wt% of mass yield, 69.2 wt% of fixed carbon, and 412.3 m2/g of surface area. The subsequent application of the hydrochar in de-chlorination of domestic water demonstrated an impressive removal performance of up to 98.9% of free chlorine, exhibiting 435 min of breakthrough time, and 40.0 mg/g of bed capacity in continuous column operation. The results show great promise of microwave hydrothermal carbonization as a desirable approach to produce desirable hydrochar for de-chlorination application.

Castor bean (Ricinus communis L.), is a plant belonging to the Euphorbiaceae family and one of the most interesting oil seed crops to develop and study in the Mediterranean basin. The main trait that enhances castor cultivation is its oil content, which is really high, around 40-55% depending on the genotype and area of cultivation. Today’s panorama and policies are pushing towards the exploitation of this crop because it is expected to be a valid alternative to fossil fuels for the production of biofuels, such as biodiesel, and for the valorization and use of abandoned and degraded land. Field experiment was conducted for analyzing the oil yield and oil content of four dwarf hybrids of castor, compared to a local genotype, selected by the University of Catania, Italy. The aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of different sowing dates on the oil content and oil yield of castor seeds. The analysis was conducted on primary and secondary raceme. The oil content was higher in the dwarf hybrids for the primary racemes, whereas for the secondary raceme the most productive one, in terms of oil content was GT. By analyzing also the oil yield (resulted from the multiplication of the oil content by the oil yield), the most productive genotype for the oil yield on average was G4, whereas SW3 was the sowing date with the highest value. Nevertheless, the combination genotype x sowing date had higher result for G3 SW3. Among the parameters studied, the genotype G2 shown a low level of tolerance to the low temperatures.
