Superhydrophobic coatings are gaining popularity because of their low maintenance requirements, high durability, and wide range of potential uses. Such coatings, for instance, may provide beneficial resistance to fouling, icing, smear, and corrosion, and can separate oil from water. Therefore, the creation of superhydrophobic materials is a topic of great interest to academics all around the world. In this paper, a spray-coating deposition technique is used to deposit silica nanoparticles on glass while using a sol–gel as a base. The applied coating increased the transmittance to 99% at 600 nm. Water contact angle (WCA) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) observations of the coated layer’s grade index and induced porousness led to superhydrophobic behavior with a water contact angle that was higher than 158°.

Reactive power compensation is one of the practical tools that can be used to improve power systems and reduce costs. These benefits are achieved when the compensators are installed in a suitable place with optimal capacity. This study solves the issues of optimal supply and the purchase of reactive power in the IEEE 30-bus power system, especially when considering voltage stability and reducing total generation and operational costs, including generation costs, reserves, and the installation of reactive power control devices. The modified version of the artificial bee colony (MABC) algorithm is proposed to solve optimization problems and its results are compared with the artificial bee colony (ABC) algorithm, the particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm and the genetic algorithm (GA). The simulation results showed that the minimum losses in the power system requires further costs for reactive power compensation. Also, optimization results proved that the proposed MABC algorithm has a lower active power loss, reactive power costs, a better voltage profile and greater stability than the other three algorithms.

Despite the increasing utilization of renewable energy resources, such as solar and wind energy, most residential buildings still rely on conventional energy supply by public utility services. Such utility services often use time-of-use energy pricing, which compels residential consumers to reduce their energy usage. This paper presents a wireless home energy management (HEM) system that enables the automatic control of home appliances to reduce energy consumption to assist such energy users. The system consists of multiple smart sockets that measure the energy that is consumed by the connected appliances and are capable of implementing on/off commands. The system includes other support components for supplying data to a central controller, which utilizes a rule-based HEM algorithm. The control rules were designed, such that the lifestyle of the user would be preserved while the energy consumption and daily energy cost were reduced. The experimental results showed that the central controller could effectively receive data and control multiple devices. The system was also found to afford significant reductions of 23.5 kWh and $2.898 in the total daily energy consumption and bill of the considered household setup, respectively. The proposed HEM system promises to be particularly useful for households with a high daily energy consumption.

In the proposed method, the generation expansion planning (GEP) of wind farms is coordinated with the transmission expansion planning (TEP) problem by using energy storage systems (ESSs) to improve network flexibility. To consider the impact of the reactive power in the CNEP problem, the AC power flow model is used. The CNEP constraints include the AC power flow equations, planning constraints of the different equipment, and the system operating limits. Therefore, this model imposes hard nonlinearity onto the problem, which is linearized by the use of first-order Taylor’s series and the big-M method as well as the linearization of the circular plane. The uncertainty of loads, the energy price, and the wind farm generation are modeled by scenario-based stochastic programming (SBSP). To determine the effectiveness of the proposed solution approach, it is tested on the IEEE 6-bus and 24-bus test systems using GAMS software.

An increase in the world’s population results in high energy demand, which is mostly fulfilled by consuming fossil fuels (FFs). By nature, FFs are scarce, depleted, and non-eco-friendly. Renewable energy sources (RESs) photovoltaics (PVs) and wind turbines (WTs) are emerging alternatives to the FFs. The integration of an energy storage system with these sources provides promising and economical results to satisfy the user’s load in a stand-alone environment. Due to the intermittent nature of RESs, their optimal sizing is a vital challenge when considering cost and reliability parameters. In this paper, three meta-heuristic algorithms: teaching-learning based optimization (TLBO), enhanced differential evolution (EDE), and the salp swarm algorithm (SSA), along with two hybrid schemes (TLBO + EDE and TLBO + SSA) called enhanced evolutionary sizing algorithms (EESAs) are proposed for solving the unit sizing problem of hybrid RESs in a stand-alone environment. The objective of this work is to minimize the user’s total annual cost (TAC). The reliability is considered via the maximum allowable loss of power supply probability ( L P S P m a x ) concept. The simulation results reveal that EESAs provide better results in terms of TAC minimization as compared to other algorithms at four L P S P m a x values of 0%, 0.5%, 1%, and 3%, respectively, for a PV-WT-battery hybrid system. An increase in the world’s population results in high energy demand, which is mostly fulfilled by consuming fossil fuels (FFs). By nature, FFs are scarce, depleted, and non-eco-friendly. Renewable energy sources (RESs) photovoltaics (PVs) and wind turbines (WTs) are emerging alternatives to the FFs. The integration of an energy storage system with these sources provides promising and economical results to satisfy the user’s load in a stand-alone environment. Due to the intermittent nature of RESs, their optimal sizing is a vital challenge when considering cost and reliability parameters. In this paper, three meta-heuristic algorithms: teaching-learning based optimization (TLBO), enhanced differential evolution (EDE), and the salp swarm algorithm (SSA), along with two hybrid schemes (TLBO + EDE and TLBO + SSA) called enhanced evolutionary sizing algorithms (EESAs) are proposed for solving the unit sizing problem of hybrid RESs in a stand-alone environment. The objective of this work is to minimize the user’s total annual cost (TAC). The reliability is considered via the maximum allowable loss of power supply probability ( L P S P m a x ) concept. The simulation results reveal that EESAs provide better results in terms of TAC minimization as compared to other algorithms at four L P S P m a x values of 0%, 0.5%, 1%, and 3%, respectively, for a PV-WT-battery hybrid system. Further, the PV-WT-battery hybrid system is found as the most economical scenario when it is compared to PV-battery and WT-battery systems.

Transportation is a vital necessity without which the entire world would come to a standstill. The fossil fuels used to power transportation are consumed at rates of approximately 100,000 times their rate of natural formation, and their consumption subjects the human environment and ecosystem to significant damage. As substitutes for fossil-based diesel, second-generation biodiesels can eliminate many of the challenges concerning first-generation biodiesels in terms of their high cost and the food versus fuel debate. The seeds of the date palm tree have significant oil content and are a promising prospective energy source. This study investigated the potential environmental benefits of this biofuel in terms of diesel tailpipe emission reduction. The various blends of palm date biodiesel were produced and matched to fuel standard requirements, resulting in four standard-compatible blends that were tested in a diesel engine at varying operating conditions for speed and load. Although the biodiesel emissions had lower concentrations of CO2, CO, and HC relative to fossil diesel, higher concentrations of NOx were detected. The results suggest that date-seed biodiesel could become a sustainable energy source for the transport sector, although further technical and economic investigations will be required before its wide deployment.

This paper thermo-physically characterizes salt hydrate, paraffin wax and milk fat as phase change materials (PCMs). The three PCMs are compared in terms of improving heat sink (HS) performance for cooling electronic packaging. An experimental study is carried out on commercially available finned HS with and without PCM under natural ventilation (NV) and forced ventilation (FV) at different heat loads (4 W to 10 W). The results indicate that integration of all of the PCMs into the HS improves its cooling performance; however, milk fat lags behind the other two PCMs in terms of cooling produced. A three-dimensional pressure-based conjugate heat transfer model has been developed and validated with experimental results. The model predicts the parametric influence of PCM melting range, thermal conductivity and density on HS thermal management performance. The HS cooling performance improves with increased density and conductivity while it deteriorates with the wider melting range of the PCMs.

The proportional integral derivative (PID) regulator is the most often utilized controller in the industry due to its benefits. It permits linear systems to operate well, but it causes non-linear behavior when the system is subjected to physical variable circumstances, such as temperature and saturation. A PID controller is insufficient in this case. The proportional integral (PI) controller inside the direct torque control (DTC) regulates the speed of the doubly fed induction motor (DFIM). However, the system consisting of DTC and a DFIM is non-linear due to its multivariable parameters, resulting in undesirable overshoots and torque ripples. As a result, several approaches are used to improve the DTC’s robustness. The integration of optimization methods was discovered. These algorithms are used to provide gains that are near-optimal, bringing the system closer to its ideal state in order to accomplish effective torque and speed control. This article focuses on a comparative study of the different objective functions, in order to have very effective DFIM behaviors, by using a genetic algorithm. Agenetic algorithm (GA) is presented in this study for adjusting the optimal PID parameters in DTC to control the DFIM, utilizing objective functions such as integral square error (ISE), integral time absolute error (ITAE), and integral absolute error (IAE), employed independently and in a weighted combination. This article offers a comparison of several objective functions inside the DTC and DFIM, which will be utilized in future research into another optimization technique for this control type. Matlab/Simulink was used to construct the novel hybrid structure based on the GA-DTC intelligent control. The simulation results demonstrated the efficiency of the GA-DTC intelligent control with a weighted combination, providing acceptable performance with respect to rapidity, precision, and stability, as well as an improvement of 14.53% in the rejection time reduction, fewer torque ripples and flux ripples on the stator and rotor by 27.88%, 15.13%, and 4.375%, respectively, and respective increases of 32.45% and 71% in the THDs of the stator and rotor currents, which are acceptable.

In this paper, we propose mathematical optimization models of household energy units to optimally control the major residential energy loads while preserving the user preferences. User comfort is modelled in a simple way, which considers appliance class, user preferences and weather conditions. The wind-driven optimization (WDO) algorithm with the objective function of comfort maximization along with minimum electricity cost is defined and implemented. On the other hand, for maximum electricity bill and peak reduction, min-max regret-based knapsack problem (K-WDO) algorithm is used. To validate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithms, extensive simulations are conducted for several scenarios. The simulations show that the proposed algorithms provide with the best optimal results with a fast convergence rate, as compared to the existing techniques.

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) experiences up to 50% power losses in photovoltaic (PV) panels caused by frequent dust accumulation over the panels trailed by extreme temperature. Compositional and morphological insights into dust particle can potentially help design PV cleaning mechanisms inclusive of self-cleaning explored in the current article. Five different locations were studied to discover potential differences in dust samples. The collected samples were characterised employing Optical Microscopy, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), X-ray Powder Diffraction (XRD), and Elemental Composition Analysis (Energy Dispersive Spectrometry, EDS). The micrographs revealed that the majority of particles were irregularly shaped, providing interlocking for the dust to stay over the surface. The particle size ranged from 0.01 to 300 µm, and some of the collected dust exhibited cavities. XRD analyses revealed variations in the chemical composition among the samples studied. Elemental Composition Analysis via EDS revealed both consistent patterns and variations in element presence among the dust samples, highlighting specific detections of chlorine (Cl) at some sites.

Superhydrophobic coatings are gaining popularity because of their low maintenance requirements, high durability, and wide range of potential uses. Such coatings, for instance, may provide beneficial resistance to fouling, icing, smear, and corrosion, and can separate oil from water. Therefore, the creation of superhydrophobic materials is a topic of great interest to academics all around the world. In this paper, a spray-coating deposition technique is used to deposit silica nanoparticles on glass while using a sol–gel as a base. The applied coating increased the transmittance to 99% at 600 nm. Water contact angle (WCA) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) observations of the coated layer’s grade index and induced porousness led to superhydrophobic behavior with a water contact angle that was higher than 158°.

Reactive power compensation is one of the practical tools that can be used to improve power systems and reduce costs. These benefits are achieved when the compensators are installed in a suitable place with optimal capacity. This study solves the issues of optimal supply and the purchase of reactive power in the IEEE 30-bus power system, especially when considering voltage stability and reducing total generation and operational costs, including generation costs, reserves, and the installation of reactive power control devices. The modified version of the artificial bee colony (MABC) algorithm is proposed to solve optimization problems and its results are compared with the artificial bee colony (ABC) algorithm, the particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm and the genetic algorithm (GA). The simulation results showed that the minimum losses in the power system requires further costs for reactive power compensation. Also, optimization results proved that the proposed MABC algorithm has a lower active power loss, reactive power costs, a better voltage profile and greater stability than the other three algorithms.

Despite the increasing utilization of renewable energy resources, such as solar and wind energy, most residential buildings still rely on conventional energy supply by public utility services. Such utility services often use time-of-use energy pricing, which compels residential consumers to reduce their energy usage. This paper presents a wireless home energy management (HEM) system that enables the automatic control of home appliances to reduce energy consumption to assist such energy users. The system consists of multiple smart sockets that measure the energy that is consumed by the connected appliances and are capable of implementing on/off commands. The system includes other support components for supplying data to a central controller, which utilizes a rule-based HEM algorithm. The control rules were designed, such that the lifestyle of the user would be preserved while the energy consumption and daily energy cost were reduced. The experimental results showed that the central controller could effectively receive data and control multiple devices. The system was also found to afford significant reductions of 23.5 kWh and $2.898 in the total daily energy consumption and bill of the considered household setup, respectively. The proposed HEM system promises to be particularly useful for households with a high daily energy consumption.

Despite the increasing utilization of renewable energy resources, such as solar and wind energy, most residential buildings still rely on conventional energy supply by public utility services. Such utility services often use time-of-use energy pricing, which compels residential consumers to reduce their energy usage. This paper presents a wireless home energy management (HEM) system that enables the automatic control of home appliances to reduce energy consumption to assist such energy users. The system consists of multiple smart sockets that measure the energy that is consumed by the connected appliances and are capable of implementing on/off commands. The system includes other support components for supplying data to a central controller, which utilizes a rule-based HEM algorithm. The control rules were designed, such that the lifestyle of the user would be preserved while the energy consumption and daily energy cost were reduced. The experimental results showed that the central controller could effectively receive data and control multiple devices. The system was also found to afford significant reductions of 23.5 kWh and $2.898 in the total daily energy consumption and bill of the considered household setup, respectively. The proposed HEM system promises to be particularly useful for households with a high daily energy consumption.

In the proposed method, the generation expansion planning (GEP) of wind farms is coordinated with the transmission expansion planning (TEP) problem by using energy storage systems (ESSs) to improve network flexibility. To consider the impact of the reactive power in the CNEP problem, the AC power flow model is used. The CNEP constraints include the AC power flow equations, planning constraints of the different equipment, and the system operating limits. Therefore, this model imposes hard nonlinearity onto the problem, which is linearized by the use of first-order Taylor’s series and the big-M method as well as the linearization of the circular plane. The uncertainty of loads, the energy price, and the wind farm generation are modeled by scenario-based stochastic programming (SBSP). To determine the effectiveness of the proposed solution approach, it is tested on the IEEE 6-bus and 24-bus test systems using GAMS software.

An increase in the world’s population results in high energy demand, which is mostly fulfilled by consuming fossil fuels (FFs). By nature, FFs are scarce, depleted, and non-eco-friendly. Renewable energy sources (RESs) photovoltaics (PVs) and wind turbines (WTs) are emerging alternatives to the FFs. The integration of an energy storage system with these sources provides promising and economical results to satisfy the user’s load in a stand-alone environment. Due to the intermittent nature of RESs, their optimal sizing is a vital challenge when considering cost and reliability parameters. In this paper, three meta-heuristic algorithms: teaching-learning based optimization (TLBO), enhanced differential evolution (EDE), and the salp swarm algorithm (SSA), along with two hybrid schemes (TLBO + EDE and TLBO + SSA) called enhanced evolutionary sizing algorithms (EESAs) are proposed for solving the unit sizing problem of hybrid RESs in a stand-alone environment. The objective of this work is to minimize the user’s total annual cost (TAC). The reliability is considered via the maximum allowable loss of power supply probability ( L P S P m a x ) concept. The simulation results reveal that EESAs provide better results in terms of TAC minimization as compared to other algorithms at four L P S P m a x values of 0%, 0.5%, 1%, and 3%, respectively, for a PV-WT-battery hybrid system. Further, the PV-WT-battery hybrid system is found as the most economical scenario when it is compared to PV-battery and WT-battery systems.

Transportation is a vital necessity without which the entire world would come to a standstill. The fossil fuels used to power transportation are consumed at rates of approximately 100,000 times their rate of natural formation, and their consumption subjects the human environment and ecosystem to significant damage. As substitutes for fossil-based diesel, second-generation biodiesels can eliminate many of the challenges concerning first-generation biodiesels in terms of their high cost and the food versus fuel debate. The seeds of the date palm tree have significant oil content and are a promising prospective energy source. This study investigated the potential environmental benefits of this biofuel in terms of diesel tailpipe emission reduction. The various blends of palm date biodiesel were produced and matched to fuel standard requirements, resulting in four standard-compatible blends that were tested in a diesel engine at varying operating conditions for speed and load. Although the biodiesel emissions had lower concentrations of CO2, CO, and HC relative to fossil diesel, higher concentrations of NOx were detected. The results suggest that date-seed biodiesel could become a sustainable energy source for the transport sector, although further technical and economic investigations will be required before its wide deployment.

This paper thermo-physically characterizes salt hydrate, paraffin wax and milk fat as phase change materials (PCMs). The three PCMs are compared in terms of improving heat sink (HS) performance for cooling electronic packaging. An experimental study is carried out on commercially available finned HS with and without PCM under natural ventilation (NV) and forced ventilation (FV) at different heat loads (4 W to 10 W). The results indicate that integration of all of the PCMs into the HS improves its cooling performance; however, milk fat lags behind the other two PCMs in terms of cooling produced. A three-dimensional pressure-based conjugate heat transfer model has been developed and validated with experimental results. The model predicts the parametric influence of PCM melting range, thermal conductivity and density on HS thermal management performance. The HS cooling performance improves with increased density and conductivity while it deteriorates with the wider melting range of the PCMs.

This paper thermo-physically characterizes salt hydrate, paraffin wax and milk fat as phase change materials (PCMs). The three PCMs are compared in terms of improving heat sink (HS) performance for cooling electronic packaging. An experimental study is carried out on commercially available finned HS with and without PCM under natural ventilation (NV) and forced ventilation (FV) at different heat loads (4 W to 10 W). The results indicate that integration of all of the PCMs into the HS improves its cooling performance; however, milk fat lags behind the other two PCMs in terms of cooling produced. A three-dimensional pressure-based conjugate heat transfer model has been developed and validated with experimental results. The model predicts the parametric influence of PCM melting range, thermal conductivity and density on HS thermal management performance. The HS cooling performance improves with increased density and conductivity while it deteriorates with the wider melting range of the PCMs.

The proportional integral derivative (PID) regulator is the most often utilized controller in the industry due to its benefits. It permits linear systems to operate well, but it causes non-linear behavior when the system is subjected to physical variable circumstances, such as temperature and saturation. A PID controller is insufficient in this case. The proportional integral (PI) controller inside the direct torque control (DTC) regulates the speed of the doubly fed induction motor (DFIM). However, the system consisting of DTC and a DFIM is non-linear due to its multivariable parameters, resulting in undesirable overshoots and torque ripples. As a result, several approaches are used to improve the DTC’s robustness. The integration of optimization methods was discovered. These algorithms are used to provide gains that are near-optimal, bringing the system closer to its ideal state in order to accomplish effective torque and speed control. This article focuses on a comparative study of the different objective functions, in order to have very effective DFIM behaviors, by using a genetic algorithm. Agenetic algorithm (GA) is presented in this study for adjusting the optimal PID parameters in DTC to control the DFIM, utilizing objective functions such as integral square error (ISE), integral time absolute error (ITAE), and integral absolute error (IAE), employed independently and in a weighted combination. This article offers a comparison of several objective functions inside the DTC and DFIM, which will be utilized in future research into another optimization technique for this control type. Matlab/Simulink was used to construct the novel hybrid structure based on the GA-DTC intelligent control. The simulation results demonstrated the efficiency of the GA-DTC intelligent control with a weighted combination, providing acceptable performance with respect to rapidity, precision, and stability, as well as an improvement of 14.53% in the rejection time reduction, fewer torque ripples and flux ripples on the stator and rotor by 27.88%, 15.13%, and 4.375%, respectively, and respective increases of 32.45% and 71% in the THDs of the stator and rotor currents, which are acceptable.

In this paper, we propose mathematical optimization models of household energy units to optimally control the major residential energy loads while preserving the user preferences. User comfort is modelled in a simple way, which considers appliance class, user preferences and weather conditions. The wind-driven optimization (WDO) algorithm with the objective function of comfort maximization along with minimum electricity cost is defined and implemented. On the other hand, for maximum electricity bill and peak reduction, min-max regret-based knapsack problem (K-WDO) algorithm is used. To validate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithms, extensive simulations are conducted for several scenarios. The simulations show that the proposed algorithms provide with the best optimal results with a fast convergence rate, as compared to the existing techniques.

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) experiences up to 50% power losses in photovoltaic (PV) panels caused by frequent dust accumulation over the panels trailed by extreme temperature. Compositional and morphological insights into dust particle can potentially help design PV cleaning mechanisms inclusive of self-cleaning explored in the current article. Five different locations were studied to discover potential differences in dust samples. The collected samples were characterised employing Optical Microscopy, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), X-ray Powder Diffraction (XRD), and Elemental Composition Analysis (Energy Dispersive Spectrometry, EDS). The micrographs revealed that the majority of particles were irregularly shaped, providing interlocking for the dust to stay over the surface. The particle size ranged from 0.01 to 300 µm, and some of the collected dust exhibited cavities. XRD analyses revealed variations in the chemical composition among the samples studied. Elemental Composition Analysis via EDS revealed both consistent patterns and variations in element presence among the dust samples, highlighting specific detections of chlorine (Cl) at some sites.
