    Energy optimization of a Multiple Effect Evaporator house employed in the concentration of black liquor during Kraft Recovery process of Paper industries is an eye-catching concern pertinent to the present-day energy scenario. This article presents a proficient approach to solve the energy optimization problem of Multiple Effect Evaporator via metaheuristic optimizers. The proposed method first transforms the energy balance equations into the objective function to be optimized. Three metaheuristic algorithms viz. Harmony Search, Imperialist Competitive Algorithm and Water Cycle Algorithm have been utilized to carry out the optimization task. These metaheuristic approaches effectively figure out the optimum values of various process parameters including steam consumption, vapor temperatures and liquor flow rates, thereby yielding the optimum Steam Economy. Further, the present work investigates the effect of Boiling Point Elevation on the system performance. The results reveal that the inclusion of Boiling Point Elevation in the mathematical model causes a reduction in Steam Economy by 3.89%. The results also demonstrate the proficiency of these metaheuristic approaches towards the solution of a complex set of simultaneous non-linear algebraic equations. For comparative investigation of these metaheuristic approaches with reference to system performance parameters, tabular, evocative and graphical demonstrations have been utilized. Moreover, with the purpose of validating the strength, efficiency and exploratory capabilities of these metaheuristic algorithms, the acquired optimization results are compared with other competent and eminent algorithms to make a comprehensive evaluation.

    The global climate change agenda proceeds at an incremental pace while the Earth is approaching critical tipping points in its development trajectory. Climate action at this pinnacle juncture needs to be greatly accelerated and rooted in the fundamentals of the problem—human beings’ disconnection from nature. This paper underscores the valuable role nature and nature-based solutions can play in addressing climate change at the city scale and its implications for broader sustainability. Urban ecosystems (nature in cities) are seen as an integral part of a proposed local climate action rubric wherein policy measures and integrated planning guide lowcarbon/impact development to create more resilient and sustainable urban environments. The use of green infrastructure is highlighted as a cost-effective means to contribute to mitigation and adaptation needs as well as to promote human wellbeing. The paper takes an exploratory view of the influence of ecosystem services, particularly cultural services, and its economics in relation to the individual and society to understand how biophilia can be nurtured to promote environmental stewardship and climate action.

    In recent years, a wide range of strategies has been implemented in different EU-countries to increase the share of electricity generation from renewable energy sources. This paper evaluates the success of different regulatory strategies. The most important conclusions of this analysis are: (i) regardless of which strategy is chosen, it is of overriding importance that there should be a clear focus on the exclusive promotion of newly installed plants; (ii) a well-designed (dynamic) feed-in tariff system ensures the fastest deployment of power plants using Renewable Energy Sources at the lowest cost to society; (iii) promotion strategies with low policy risks have lower profit requirements for investors and, hence, cause lower costs to electricity customers.

    The electrical ageing of photovoltaic modules during extended damp-heat tests at different stress levels is investigated for three types of crystalline silicon photovoltaic modules with different backsheets, encapsulants and cell types. Deploying different stress levels allows determination of an equivalent stress dose function, which is a first step towards a lifetime prediction of devices. The derived humidity dose is used to characterise the degradation of power as well as that of the solar cell's equivalent circuit parameters calculated from measured current–voltage characteristics. An application of this to the samples demonstrates different modes in the degradation and thus enables better understanding of the module's underlying ageing mechanisms. The analysis of changes in the solar cell equivalent circuit parameters identified the primary contributors to the power degradation and distinguished the potential ageing mechanism for each types of module investigated in this paper. © 2016 The Authors.     Abstract In this paper, a process for the fermentative production of hydrogen is analysed with respect to its exergy efficiency. Parametric studies show the influence of used feedstock, applied process parameters as well as process and heat integration measures on exergy efficiency. It is shown that heat integration and recirculation of fermentor effluents reduce process irreversibilites and the amount of exergy leaving the process in waste streams. Nevertheless, depending on the used feedstock, a large amount of exergy leaves the process via by-products. Internal use of by-products and waste materials for providing process heat could increase chemical exergy efficiency up to 74%.

    The ATLAS Inner Detector is a composite tracking system consisting of silicon pixels, silicon strips and straw tubes in a 2 T magnetic field. Its installation was completed in August 2008 and the detector took part in data- taking with single LHC beams and cosmic rays. The initial detector operation, hardware commissioning and in-situ calibrations are described. Tracking performance has been measured with 7.6 million cosmic-ray events, collected using a tracking trigger and reconstructed with modular pattern-recognition and fitting software. The intrinsic hit efficiency and tracking trigger efficiencies are close to 100%. Lorentz angle measurements for both electrons and holes, specific energy-loss calibration and transition radiation turn-on measurements have been performed. Different alignment techniques have been used to reconstruct the detector geometry. After the initial alignment, a transverse impact parameter resolution of 22.1+/-0.9 ��m and a relative momentum resolution ��p/p = (4.83+/-0.16) \times 10-4 GeV-1 \times pT have been measured for high momentum tracks. 34 pages, 25 figures

    With the increasing scale and scope of global trade, the magnitude of the CO2 flows embodied in goods and services through international trade has aroused great concern among researchers and governments. In this study, we established a global network model of these CO2 transfers from 2001 to 2010 using ecological network analysis and data from the World Input-Output Database for 40 selected countries whose GDP accounted for more than 85% of the total global GDP. Based on the utility analysis, we determined the ecological relationships among the countries involved in the global trade network and their changes during the study period. The analysis revealed that competition and exploitation/control relationships dominated the global network, with each accounting for more than 40% of the total relationships throughout the study period; mutualism accounted for the smallest proportion (less than 4%). More than 80% of the competition and 75% of the exploitation/control relationships were within Europe or involved flows from Europe to North America or Asia. Finland, France, Japan, Greece, and Spain had the largest proportions of competition relationships. In Denmark, Luxembourg, Malta, and Switzerland, exploitation was dominant, whereas in Russia, Indonesia, and India, control was dominant. Our analysis identifies the key nodes of the many adverse ecological relationships within the global CO2 network and those with more mutual relationships. Our work provides a scientific basis for developing more ecologically sustainable national and global CO2 flows through trade.

    AbstractFor modelling the porosity of the electrodes in a lithium-ion battery the electrode materials are described by spherical particles. With these particles the main chemical reaction, the diffusion of lithium into the electrodes, is described. Because the main reaction occurs at the surface of a particle a numerically efficient solver which is able to predict the correct surface concentration with only a few discretization points in the bulk is developed. The new algorithm is compared to a standard finite difference scheme with respect to accuracy, the number of discretization points used, and calculation time.

    Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy is an important tool for fuel-cell analysis and monitoring. This study focuses on the low-AC frequencies (2–0.1 Hz) to show that the thickness of the catalyst layer significantly influences the overall resistance of the cell. By combining known models, a new equivalent circuit model was generated. The new model is able to simulate the impedance signal in the complete frequency spectrum of 105–10−2 Hz, usually used in experimental work on polymer electrolyte fuel cells (PEMFCs). The model was compared with experimental data and to an older model from the literature for verification. The electrochemical impedance spectra recorded on different MEAs with cathode catalyst layer thicknesses of approx. 5 and 12 µm show the appearance of a third semicircle in the low-frequency region that scales with current density. It has been shown that the ohmic resistance contribution (Rmt) of this third semicircle increases with the catalyst layer’s thickness. Furthermore, the electrolyte resistance is shown to decrease with increasing catalyst-layer thickness. The cause of this phenomenon was identified to be increased water retention by thicker catalyst layers.

    Most plastic products in circulation worldwide are based on fossil petroleum and are not biodegradable,which is known to be one of the biggest burdens and threats to the environment. One possible solution to this problem could be the use of bio-based and biodegradable polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB). Undernitrogen and phosphate depletion, Synechocystis sp. PCC 6714 produces PHB. As a positive side-effect,this method also binds the greenhouse gas CO2 through photosynthesis.This thesis analyses the results of a series of experiments carried out as part of basic research to better understand a possible PHB production process. The main goal was to investigate the effects of different lactose concentrations between 1 and 10 g/L from concentrated whey on the microorganism,particularly on the PHB production. The following three main results were obtained:Firstly, the cyanobacterium strain used could not metabolise lactose and even showed lower growth andPHB content of 2.2% at 1 g/L lactose compared to 4.2% without the addition of whey in the shake flaskexperiment. When upscaling in a photobioreactor, the same ratios were observed between cultivationswith and without whey, with the PHB content doubling to 6.5 and 10.5% (volumetric productivity 7.7and 21.1 mg/L/day).Secondly, the standard hydrolysation method for PHB quantification with concentrated sulfuric acid was compared with the alkaline sodium hydroxide method using a multivariate data analysis.Subsequently, the more promising acidic method was further optimised to reduce viscosity of sulfuricacid, gaining an optimum at 160 min, 14 M H2SO4, 100°C.Thirdly, as an alternative to the state of the art methods for recovering PHB, which use, e.g. the harmful chloroform, three ionic liquids based on the cation 1-Ethyl-3-methylimidazolium with three differentanions Dimethylphosphate, Acetate or Chloride were tested to dissolve the biomass but not thebiopolymer. 1-Ethyl-3-methylimidazolium Dimethylphosphate completely dissolved the biomass at75°C after 1 h and did not decompose or dissolve the PHB so that it could be implemented in a complete recovery process.

    Energy optimization of a Multiple Effect Evaporator house employed in the concentration of black liquor during Kraft Recovery process of Paper industries is an eye-catching concern pertinent to the present-day energy scenario. This article presents a proficient approach to solve the energy optimization problem of Multiple Effect Evaporator via metaheuristic optimizers. The proposed method first transforms the energy balance equations into the objective function to be optimized. Three metaheuristic algorithms viz. Harmony Search, Imperialist Competitive Algorithm and Water Cycle Algorithm have been utilized to carry out the optimization task. These metaheuristic approaches effectively figure out the optimum values of various process parameters including steam consumption, vapor temperatures and liquor flow rates, thereby yielding the optimum Steam Economy. Further, the present work investigates the effect of Boiling Point Elevation on the system performance. The results reveal that the inclusion of Boiling Point Elevation in the mathematical model causes a reduction in Steam Economy by 3.89%. The results also demonstrate the proficiency of these metaheuristic approaches towards the solution of a complex set of simultaneous non-linear algebraic equations. For comparative investigation of these metaheuristic approaches with reference to system performance parameters, tabular, evocative and graphical demonstrations have been utilized. Moreover, with the purpose of validating the strength, efficiency and exploratory capabilities of these metaheuristic algorithms, the acquired optimization results are compared with other competent and eminent algorithms to make a comprehensive evaluation.

    The global climate change agenda proceeds at an incremental pace while the Earth is approaching critical tipping points in its development trajectory. Climate action at this pinnacle juncture needs to be greatly accelerated and rooted in the fundamentals of the problem—human beings’ disconnection from nature. This paper underscores the valuable role nature and nature-based solutions can play in addressing climate change at the city scale and its implications for broader sustainability. Urban ecosystems (nature in cities) are seen as an integral part of a proposed local climate action rubric wherein policy measures and integrated planning guide lowcarbon/impact development to create more resilient and sustainable urban environments. The use of green infrastructure is highlighted as a cost-effective means to contribute to mitigation and adaptation needs as well as to promote human wellbeing. The paper takes an exploratory view of the influence of ecosystem services, particularly cultural services, and its economics in relation to the individual and society to understand how biophilia can be nurtured to promote environmental stewardship and climate action.

    In recent years, a wide range of strategies has been implemented in different EU-countries to increase the share of electricity generation from renewable energy sources. This paper evaluates the success of different regulatory strategies. The most important conclusions of this analysis are: (i) regardless of which strategy is chosen, it is of overriding importance that there should be a clear focus on the exclusive promotion of newly installed plants; (ii) a well-designed (dynamic) feed-in tariff system ensures the fastest deployment of power plants using Renewable Energy Sources at the lowest cost to society; (iii) promotion strategies with low policy risks have lower profit requirements for investors and, hence, cause lower costs to electricity customers.

    The electrical ageing of photovoltaic modules during extended damp-heat tests at different stress levels is investigated for three types of crystalline silicon photovoltaic modules with different backsheets, encapsulants and cell types. Deploying different stress levels allows determination of an equivalent stress dose function, which is a first step towards a lifetime prediction of devices. The derived humidity dose is used to characterise the degradation of power as well as that of the solar cell's equivalent circuit parameters calculated from measured current–voltage characteristics. An application of this to the samples demonstrates different modes in the degradation and thus enables better understanding of the module's underlying ageing mechanisms. The analysis of changes in the solar cell equivalent circuit parameters identified the primary contributors to the power degradation and distinguished the potential ageing mechanism for each types of module investigated in this paper. © 2016 The Authors.     Abstract In this paper, a process for the fermentative production of hydrogen is analysed with respect to its exergy efficiency. Parametric studies show the influence of used feedstock, applied process parameters as well as process and heat integration measures on exergy efficiency. It is shown that heat integration and recirculation of fermentor effluents reduce process irreversibilites and the amount of exergy leaving the process in waste streams. Nevertheless, depending on the used feedstock, a large amount of exergy leaves the process via by-products. Internal use of by-products and waste materials for providing process heat could increase chemical exergy efficiency up to 74%.

    The ATLAS Inner Detector is a composite tracking system consisting of silicon pixels, silicon strips and straw tubes in a 2 T magnetic field. Its installation was completed in August 2008 and the detector took part in data- taking with single LHC beams and cosmic rays. The initial detector operation, hardware commissioning and in-situ calibrations are described. Tracking performance has been measured with 7.6 million cosmic-ray events, collected using a tracking trigger and reconstructed with modular pattern-recognition and fitting software. The intrinsic hit efficiency and tracking trigger efficiencies are close to 100%. Lorentz angle measurements for both electrons and holes, specific energy-loss calibration and transition radiation turn-on measurements have been performed. Different alignment techniques have been used to reconstruct the detector geometry. After the initial alignment, a transverse impact parameter resolution of 22.1+/-0.9 ��m and a relative momentum resolution ��p/p = (4.83+/-0.16) \times 10-4 GeV-1 \times pT have been measured for high momentum tracks. 34 pages, 25 figures

    With the increasing scale and scope of global trade, the magnitude of the CO2 flows embodied in goods and services through international trade has aroused great concern among researchers and governments. In this study, we established a global network model of these CO2 transfers from 2001 to 2010 using ecological network analysis and data from the World Input-Output Database for 40 selected countries whose GDP accounted for more than 85% of the total global GDP. Based on the utility analysis, we determined the ecological relationships among the countries involved in the global trade network and their changes during the study period. The analysis revealed that competition and exploitation/control relationships dominated the global network, with each accounting for more than 40% of the total relationships throughout the study period; mutualism accounted for the smallest proportion (less than 4%). More than 80% of the competition and 75% of the exploitation/control relationships were within Europe or involved flows from Europe to North America or Asia. Finland, France, Japan, Greece, and Spain had the largest proportions of competition relationships. In Denmark, Luxembourg, Malta, and Switzerland, exploitation was dominant, whereas in Russia, Indonesia, and India, control was dominant. Our analysis identifies the key nodes of the many adverse ecological relationships within the global CO2 network and those with more mutual relationships. Our work provides a scientific basis for developing more ecologically sustainable national and global CO2 flows through trade.

    AbstractFor modelling the porosity of the electrodes in a lithium-ion battery the electrode materials are described by spherical particles. With these particles the main chemical reaction, the diffusion of lithium into the electrodes, is described. Because the main reaction occurs at the surface of a particle a numerically efficient solver which is able to predict the correct surface concentration with only a few discretization points in the bulk is developed. The new algorithm is compared to a standard finite difference scheme with respect to accuracy, the number of discretization points used, and calculation time.

    Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy is an important tool for fuel-cell analysis and monitoring. This study focuses on the low-AC frequencies (2–0.1 Hz) to show that the thickness of the catalyst layer significantly influences the overall resistance of the cell. By combining known models, a new equivalent circuit model was generated. The new model is able to simulate the impedance signal in the complete frequency spectrum of 105–10−2 Hz, usually used in experimental work on polymer electrolyte fuel cells (PEMFCs). The model was compared with experimental data and to an older model from the literature for verification. The electrochemical impedance spectra recorded on different MEAs with cathode catalyst layer thicknesses of approx. 5 and 12 µm show the appearance of a third semicircle in the low-frequency region that scales with current density. It has been shown that the ohmic resistance contribution (Rmt) of this third semicircle increases with the catalyst layer’s thickness. Furthermore, the electrolyte resistance is shown to decrease with increasing catalyst-layer thickness. The cause of this phenomenon was identified to be increased water retention by thicker catalyst layers.

    Most plastic products in circulation worldwide are based on fossil petroleum and are not biodegradable,which is known to be one of the biggest burdens and threats to the environment. One possible solution to this problem could be the use of bio-based and biodegradable polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB). Undernitrogen and phosphate depletion, Synechocystis sp. PCC 6714 produces PHB. As a positive side-effect,this method also binds the greenhouse gas CO2 through photosynthesis.This thesis analyses the results of a series of experiments carried out as part of basic research to better understand a possible PHB production process. The main goal was to investigate the effects of different lactose concentrations between 1 and 10 g/L from concentrated whey on the microorganism,particularly on the PHB production. The following three main results were obtained:Firstly, the cyanobacterium strain used could not metabolise lactose and even showed lower growth andPHB content of 2.2% at 1 g/L lactose compared to 4.2% without the addition of whey in the shake flaskexperiment. When upscaling in a photobioreactor, the same ratios were observed between cultivationswith and without whey, with the PHB content doubling to 6.5 and 10.5% (volumetric productivity 7.7and 21.1 mg/L/day).Secondly, the standard hydrolysation method for PHB quantification with concentrated sulfuric acid was compared with the alkaline sodium hydroxide method using a multivariate data analysis.Subsequently, the more promising acidic method was further optimised to reduce viscosity of sulfuricacid, gaining an optimum at 160 min, 14 M H2SO4, 100°C.Thirdly, as an alternative to the state of the art methods for recovering PHB, which use, e.g. the harmful chloroform, three ionic liquids based on the cation 1-Ethyl-3-methylimidazolium with three differentanions Dimethylphosphate, Acetate or Chloride were tested to dissolve the biomass but not thebiopolymer. 1-Ethyl-3-methylimidazolium Dimethylphosphate completely dissolved the biomass at75°C after 1 h and did not decompose or dissolve the PHB so that it could be implemented in a complete recovery process.
