To our knowledge, this study is the first to describe the variability of surface water quality in inland waters in China, the affecting drivers behind the changes, and how the government-financed conservation actions have impacted water quality. Water quality was found to be poorest in the North and the Northeast China Plain where there is greater coverage of developed land (cities + cropland), a higher gross domestic product (GDP), and higher population density. There are significant positive relationships between the concentration of the annual mean chemical oxygen demand (COD) and the percentage of developed land use (cities + cropland), GDP, and population density in the individual watersheds (p < 0.001). During the past decade, following Chinese government-financed investments in environmental restoration and reforestation, the water quality of Chinese inland waters has improved markedly, which is particularly evident from the significant and exponentially decreasing GDP-normalized COD and ammonium (NH4+-N) concentrations. It is evident that the increasing GDP in China over the past decade did not occur at the continued expense of its inland water ecosystems. This offers hope for the future, also for other industrializing countries, that with appropriate environmental investments a high GDP can be reached and maintained, while simultaneously preserving inland aquatic ecosystems, particularly through management of sewage discharge.

<div class="section abstract"><div class="htmlview paragraph">The introduction of new light-duty vehicle emission limits to comply under real driving conditions (RDE) is pushing the diesel engine manufacturers to identify and improve the technologies and strategies for further emission reduction. The latest technology advancements on the after-treatment systems have permitted to achieve very low emission conformity factors over the RDE, and therefore, the biggest challenge of the diesel engine development is maintaining its competitiveness in the trade-off “CO<sub>2</sub>-system cost” in comparison to other propulsion systems. In this regard, diesel engines can continue to play an important role, in the short-medium term, to enable cost-effective compliance of CO<sub>2</sub>-fleet emission targets, either in conventional or hybrid propulsion systems configuration. This is especially true for large-size cars, SUVs and light commercial vehicles.</div><div class="htmlview paragraph">In this framework, a comprehensive approach covering the whole powertrain is of primary importance in order to simultaneously meet the performance, efficiency, noise and emission targets, and therefore, further development of the combustion system design and injection system represent important levers for additional improvements. For this purpose, a dedicated 0.5 dm<sup>3</sup> single-cylinder engine has been developed and equipped with, a state-of-the-art Euro 6 combustion system, and an advanced common rail fuel injection system (FIS) offering higher flexibility in terms of injection strategy and higher quantity accuracy. Three injector nozzles with different hydraulic flow rates (HF) have been selected and employed for the overall combustion process optimization.</div><div class="htmlview paragraph">The optimization has been performed by means of an extensive DoE-based test campaign in which the engine and FIS operating parameters have been parametrized with the aim to carry out a proper combination in terms of HF and injection strategy. The results at partial load conditions evidence significant advantages in applying an advanced injection pattern, while the HF reduction can significantly improve the smoke emission and combustion noise without fuel consumption penalties. Therefore, a proper combination and optimization of the HF and injection strategy can provide low noise and engine-out smoke while maintaining the rated power performance targets.</div></div>

Abstract Plant competitive interactions influence the effect of herbicides, and the effect of competitive interactions on plant responses may be important to include in the ecological risk assessment of herbicides. In the present study the effect of competitive interactions and sublethal doses of 2 herbicides on plant species was investigated in competition experiments and fitted to empirical competition models. Two nontarget species commonly found in agroecosystems (Centaurea cyanus L. and Silene noctiflora L.) and 2 herbicides (glyphosate and metsulfuron methyl) were used in separate experiments. Plants were sprayed at the 6- to 8-leaf stage. Effects of herbicide treatments and plant density were modeled by generalization of a discrete hyperbolic competition model. The 10% effective dose (ED10) was calculated for C. cyanus. All experiments showed that as density increased, plants were negatively affected. Furthermore, in all cases, C. cyanus remained a better competitor than S. noctiflora. Nevertheless, the density of S. noctiflora (competitor) was an influential element in determining the ED10 of C. cyanus measured at the mature stage. With herbicide exposure, the competitive interactions were further altered; C. cyanus was less affected by glyphosate when S. noctiflora increased to high density. In contrast, at the young stage, conspecific density was important in determining the sensitivity of C. cyanus to metsulfuron methyl, whereas the density of the competitor S. noctiflora had a limited influence. Overall, the results demonstrate the importance of integrating the effect of herbicide and species interactions measured at the reproductive stage into the ecological risk assessments of pesticides. Due to the outstanding performance of ECCs, they are suitable for various construction and repair applications. However, in order for ECCs to achieve their properties; a high amount of binder which is primarily composed of Portland cement (PC) is used alongside a special type of ultrafine silica sand (USS) which is different from the conventional natural fine aggregates. The production of PC is known to be detrimental to the environment due to its high carbon dioxide emissions coupled with the high consumption of natural resources. Thus, the high use of PC content in ECCs posed a sustainability threat. Similarly, the USS used in ECCs are not readily available everywhere and are expensive. The processing of the USS coupled with its transportation over long distances would also increase the cost and embodied carbon of ECCs. Hence, in order to promote more development and applications of ECCs for various applications; this dissertation aims to provide innovative ways to improve the sustainability of ECCs and their performances. This dissertation offers four solutions to improve the sustainability of ECCs which are (i) use of unconventional industrial by-products as partial replacement of PC (ii) total replacement of PC in ECCs with alternative sustainable binders (iii) replacement of USS in ECCs with recycled materials and (iv) the use of supplementary cementitious materials to replace a high volume of PC. The findings from this study revealed sustainable ECCs with acceptable mechanical and durability performance can be achieved with the use of alternative binders or replacement of the conventional USS used in ECC mixtures. The sustainability and cost assessment of the ECCs indicated that the incorporation of industrial by-products such as blast furnace slag (BFS) especially at higher content is beneficial to reducing the negative environmental impact and economic burden associated with ECCs compared to the conventional ECC. The sustainability index and cost index of the ECCs further showed that the use of BFS is more beneficial when the sustainability and cost of the ECCs are compared with the corresponding performance. Similarly, the use of recycled materials as an alternative to USS was found to result in a significant reduction in the embodied carbon and cost of ECCs. The use of recycled materials such as expanded glass (EG) as aggregates in ECCs was also found to improve the thermal insulation properties of ECCs making such ECC suitable for the production of building envelope elements.

Urban environments provide opportunities for greater resource efficiency and the fostering of urban ecosystems. Brownfield areas are a typical example of underused land resources. Brownfield redevelopment projects that include green infrastructure allow for further ecosystems to be accommodated in urban environments. Green infrastructure also deliver important urban ecosystem services (UES) to local residents, which can greatly contribute to improving quality of life in cities. In this case study, we quantify and assess the economic value of five UES for a brownfield redevelopment project in Antwerp, Belgium. The assessment is carried out using the “Nature Value Explorer” modelling tool. The case includes three types of green infrastructure (green corridor,infiltration gullies and green roofs) primarily intended to connect nature reserves on the urban periphery and to avoid surface runoff. The green infrastructure also provides air filtration, climate regulation, carbon sequestration and recreation ecosystem services. The value of recreation far exceeds other values, including the value of avoided runoff. The case study raises crucial questions as to whether existing UES valuation approaches adequately account for the range of UES provided and whether such approaches can be improved to achieve more accurate and reliable value estimates in future analyses.

Dual active bridge converters enable bidirectional power flow in buck and boost operating modes. This paper presents an advanced switching sequence and burst-mode strategy to balance conduction, switching, and magnetic losses under light, medium, and heavy loading conditions, leading to improved operating efficiency. The implementation of the switching sequence employs the natural state-plane trajectories of the converter and contributes to higher efficiency and the ability to perform burst mode. The proposed switching sequences improve the overall efficiency of the converter by enabling soft switching and adjusting the frequency to match the minimum RMS transformer current in the full operating range. Furthermore, it incorporates a fully controlled burst-mode switching sequence for light loading conditions to further extend the efficiency gains. As a result, maximum efficiency is obtained by taking advantage of all the possible switching structures of the converter. The analysis provides insight into the natural trajectories of the converter, which produce soft-switching transitions and enable the converter structures to achieve the target operating point directly. Simulation and experimental results are presented to validate the benefits of the switching sequence and illustrate the burst-mode operation.

A range of different approaches to more stable PEMs based on Nafion have been studied of which composite materials of Nafion with mechanically stronger polymers is one of the most promising directions. If successful, they will lead to thinner composite PEMs with enhanced fuel cell performance, life span, and cost-effectiveness. Developed in this thesis are electrospinning conditions for the fabrication of electrospun mats for potential application in PEMs. Polysulfone (PSU), poly vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene (PVDF-HFP), and polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) were tested as mechanically stronger but inert (minimal contribution to proton transport) polymers that can tolerate the fuel cell condition. PVDF-HFP generated defect free electrospun mats over a wide range of spinning conditions, while PSU required very specific conditions and no successful conditions were found for PVDF mostly due to over-wetting. These mats might function as mechanical support and could be tested as PEMs when filled with Nafion, but the complete filling of electrospun mats with Nafion has been proven difficult. Instead, the electrospinning of Nafion was tested to explore options of electrospinning mixed mats of two different polymers and co-electrospinning of core-sheath fibers. Two commercial Nafion solutions D520 and D2020 with 5 wt% and 20 wt% content of Nafion were electrospun together with polyethylene oxide of two different molecular weights as a carrier polymer. Mats of sufficient quality for PEM tests were obtained with solutions based on 20 wt% content of Nafion, a low flow rate of 0.2 mL/h, and the lower molecular weight polyethylene oxide as the carrier. Finally, coaxial electrospinning conditions for the formation of core-sheath fibers were developed for Nafion as sheath material and PVDF-HFP or PSU as the core material. Defect-free, core-sheath fibers were generated when the concentration of both solutions was high (20 wt%), the Nafion flow rate was about 0.2 mL/h for the sheath, and the core flow rate was below the flow rate of the sheath (0.1-0.15 mL/h for PVDF-HFP and 0.15 mL/h for PSU). Mats of these core-sheath fibers should provide good mechanical strength combined with much better compatibility with Nafion. A straightforward pore filling with Nafion solutions is expected and their investigation as PEMs in fuel cells is planned as future work.

Abstract The essay stages the law at the intersections between the humanities, technology, and the production of digital space. Interactions like these are relevant in the present age, where humankind is outcompeting natural resources and changing the earth. The Anthropocene is an epoch of environmental crisis; despite this, we turn such a crisis into a process of sublimation servient to the control of the earth. Blurring the divide between the digital and the human is functional to such a process. The strategic use of the law makes climate-change policies compatible with global markets. Assuming that manufacturing digital spaces is useful to this end, the essay focuses on multimedia games. Blending real-word performances with internet- and media-related contents, they are functional to sublimation, convincing us that we can tackle climate change without rearranging our economic paradigms.

Global climatic energy balance has been increasingly altered by massive emissions of greenhouse gases (GHGs), such as carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), and nitrous oxide (N2O), leading to a variety of natural disturbances in terrestrial ecosystems. Further, the increasing use of fossil fuels and the looming climate crisis have created an unprecedented urgency for the development of a biobased circular economy. Therefore, production of biofuels from plant biomass is currently seen as a promising source of renewable energy, ensuring sustainable development with minimal carbon footprint. Soil acidification is considered one of the major obstacles to crop production and a significant source of GHGs emissions, especially N2O, because acidification changes the physicochemical and biochemical properties of the soil. Dolomite (DM) is the most widely used countermeasure to neutralize soil acidity to improve crop productivity and control net fluxes of GHGs. Nevertheless, the extent of GHG emissions following the application of DM under different environmental conditions is still unclear. Therefore, in this context, we conducted a meta-analysis using 32 peer-reviewed publications to determine the effects of DM, climate zones, and soil properties on GHGs emissions. The results of the current meta-analysis show that DM application significantly increased CO2 emissions (30.34 %) and CH4 emissions (4.91 %), but reduced N2O emissions by 54.88 %. A significant effect of DM (>10 t ha−1) on CO2, CH4, and N2O emissions was also observed. Increasing soil pH increased CO2 and N2O emissions by 188.34 % and 49.78 %, respectively, while reducing CH4 emissions by 81.94 %. Most importantly, WFPS, soil textural class, soil C:N ratio, and climate zones were identified as key edaphic factors affecting the GHG emissions following the application of DM. Abstract The voltammetric response of microparticulate deposits resulting from solvent evaporation of ethanolic extracts of mangrove sediments in contact with aqueous acetate buffer is hereby described. Dated sediment cores sampled from the Peruvian mangrove system (“Manglares de Tumbes” National Sanctuary) presented voltammetric responses dominated by oxidative signals of organic components that exhibit significant variations depending on the depth. Voltammetric data allowed for the definition of electrochemical indexes representative of the electrochemically oxidable organic matter fraction. These electrochemical indexes were fEAOM (for the total amount of organic matter being electrochemically active), fEROM (for the fraction of organic matter electrochemically oxidizable in reversible form), fRDOX (for the proportion between the fractions of electrochemically active organic matter which is in an oxidized state and in a reduced state) and fROS (capability for reaction with reactive oxygen species), while the spectroscopic index A1650/A3400 (as a proxy analogous to fRDOX) was also applied. The mangrove forest presents a higher oxidized fraction of the electrochemically active organic matter, as confirmed by additional data obtained from infrared spectroscopy. These results indicate that the described electrochemical indexes may provide insights on organic matter degradation by oxidative processes in addition to chemical analyses of coastal vegetated systems that are currently used, such as mangrove wetlands.

To our knowledge, this study is the first to describe the variability of surface water quality in inland waters in China, the affecting drivers behind the changes, and how the government-financed conservation actions have impacted water quality. Water quality was found to be poorest in the North and the Northeast China Plain where there is greater coverage of developed land (cities + cropland), a higher gross domestic product (GDP), and higher population density. There are significant positive relationships between the concentration of the annual mean chemical oxygen demand (COD) and the percentage of developed land use (cities + cropland), GDP, and population density in the individual watersheds (p < 0.001). During the past decade, following Chinese government-financed investments in environmental restoration and reforestation, the water quality of Chinese inland waters has improved markedly, which is particularly evident from the significant and exponentially decreasing GDP-normalized COD and ammonium (NH4+-N) concentrations. It is evident that the increasing GDP in China over the past decade did not occur at the continued expense of its inland water ecosystems. This offers hope for the future, also for other industrializing countries, that with appropriate environmental investments a high GDP can be reached and maintained, while simultaneously preserving inland aquatic ecosystems, particularly through management of sewage discharge.

<div class="section abstract"><div class="htmlview paragraph">The introduction of new light-duty vehicle emission limits to comply under real driving conditions (RDE) is pushing the diesel engine manufacturers to identify and improve the technologies and strategies for further emission reduction. The latest technology advancements on the after-treatment systems have permitted to achieve very low emission conformity factors over the RDE, and therefore, the biggest challenge of the diesel engine development is maintaining its competitiveness in the trade-off “CO<sub>2</sub>-system cost” in comparison to other propulsion systems. In this regard, diesel engines can continue to play an important role, in the short-medium term, to enable cost-effective compliance of CO<sub>2</sub>-fleet emission targets, either in conventional or hybrid propulsion systems configuration. This is especially true for large-size cars, SUVs and light commercial vehicles.</div><div class="htmlview paragraph">In this framework, a comprehensive approach covering the whole powertrain is of primary importance in order to simultaneously meet the performance, efficiency, noise and emission targets, and therefore, further development of the combustion system design and injection system represent important levers for additional improvements. For this purpose, a dedicated 0.5 dm<sup>3</sup> single-cylinder engine has been developed and equipped with, a state-of-the-art Euro 6 combustion system, and an advanced common rail fuel injection system (FIS) offering higher flexibility in terms of injection strategy and higher quantity accuracy. Three injector nozzles with different hydraulic flow rates (HF) have been selected and employed for the overall combustion process optimization.</div><div class="htmlview paragraph">The optimization has been performed by means of an extensive DoE-based test campaign in which the engine and FIS operating parameters have been parametrized with the aim to carry out a proper combination in terms of HF and injection strategy. The results at partial load conditions evidence significant advantages in applying an advanced injection pattern, while the HF reduction can significantly improve the smoke emission and combustion noise without fuel consumption penalties. Therefore, a proper combination and optimization of the HF and injection strategy can provide low noise and engine-out smoke while maintaining the rated power performance targets.</div></div>

Abstract Plant competitive interactions influence the effect of herbicides, and the effect of competitive interactions on plant responses may be important to include in the ecological risk assessment of herbicides. In the present study the effect of competitive interactions and sublethal doses of 2 herbicides on plant species was investigated in competition experiments and fitted to empirical competition models. Two nontarget species commonly found in agroecosystems (Centaurea cyanus L. and Silene noctiflora L.) and 2 herbicides (glyphosate and metsulfuron methyl) were used in separate experiments. Plants were sprayed at the 6- to 8-leaf stage. Effects of herbicide treatments and plant density were modeled by generalization of a discrete hyperbolic competition model. The 10% effective dose (ED10) was calculated for C. cyanus. All experiments showed that as density increased, plants were negatively affected. Furthermore, in all cases, C. cyanus remained a better competitor than S. noctiflora. Nevertheless, the density of S. noctiflora (competitor) was an influential element in determining the ED10 of C. cyanus measured at the mature stage. With herbicide exposure, the competitive interactions were further altered; C. cyanus was less affected by glyphosate when S. noctiflora increased to high density. In contrast, at the young stage, conspecific density was important in determining the sensitivity of C. cyanus to metsulfuron methyl, whereas the density of the competitor S. noctiflora had a limited influence. Overall, the results demonstrate the importance of integrating the effect of herbicide and species interactions measured at the reproductive stage into the ecological risk assessments of pesticides. Due to the outstanding performance of ECCs, they are suitable for various construction and repair applications. However, in order for ECCs to achieve their properties; a high amount of binder which is primarily composed of Portland cement (PC) is used alongside a special type of ultrafine silica sand (USS) which is different from the conventional natural fine aggregates. The production of PC is known to be detrimental to the environment due to its high carbon dioxide emissions coupled with the high consumption of natural resources. Thus, the high use of PC content in ECCs posed a sustainability threat. Similarly, the USS used in ECCs are not readily available everywhere and are expensive. The processing of the USS coupled with its transportation over long distances would also increase the cost and embodied carbon of ECCs. Hence, in order to promote more development and applications of ECCs for various applications; this dissertation aims to provide innovative ways to improve the sustainability of ECCs and their performances. This dissertation offers four solutions to improve the sustainability of ECCs which are (i) use of unconventional industrial by-products as partial replacement of PC (ii) total replacement of PC in ECCs with alternative sustainable binders (iii) replacement of USS in ECCs with recycled materials and (iv) the use of supplementary cementitious materials to replace a high volume of PC. The findings from this study revealed sustainable ECCs with acceptable mechanical and durability performance can be achieved with the use of alternative binders or replacement of the conventional USS used in ECC mixtures. The sustainability and cost assessment of the ECCs indicated that the incorporation of industrial by-products such as blast furnace slag (BFS) especially at higher content is beneficial to reducing the negative environmental impact and economic burden associated with ECCs compared to the conventional ECC. The sustainability index and cost index of the ECCs further showed that the use of BFS is more beneficial when the sustainability and cost of the ECCs are compared with the corresponding performance. Similarly, the use of recycled materials as an alternative to USS was found to result in a significant reduction in the embodied carbon and cost of ECCs. The use of recycled materials such as expanded glass (EG) as aggregates in ECCs was also found to improve the thermal insulation properties of ECCs making such ECC suitable for the production of building envelope elements.

Urban environments provide opportunities for greater resource efficiency and the fostering of urban ecosystems. Brownfield areas are a typical example of underused land resources. Brownfield redevelopment projects that include green infrastructure allow for further ecosystems to be accommodated in urban environments. Green infrastructure also deliver important urban ecosystem services (UES) to local residents, which can greatly contribute to improving quality of life in cities. In this case study, we quantify and assess the economic value of five UES for a brownfield redevelopment project in Antwerp, Belgium. The assessment is carried out using the “Nature Value Explorer” modelling tool. The case includes three types of green infrastructure (green corridor,infiltration gullies and green roofs) primarily intended to connect nature reserves on the urban periphery and to avoid surface runoff. The green infrastructure also provides air filtration, climate regulation, carbon sequestration and recreation ecosystem services. The value of recreation far exceeds other values, including the value of avoided runoff. The case study raises crucial questions as to whether existing UES valuation approaches adequately account for the range of UES provided and whether such approaches can be improved to achieve more accurate and reliable value estimates in future analyses.

Dual active bridge converters enable bidirectional power flow in buck and boost operating modes. This paper presents an advanced switching sequence and burst-mode strategy to balance conduction, switching, and magnetic losses under light, medium, and heavy loading conditions, leading to improved operating efficiency. The implementation of the switching sequence employs the natural state-plane trajectories of the converter and contributes to higher efficiency and the ability to perform burst mode. The proposed switching sequences improve the overall efficiency of the converter by enabling soft switching and adjusting the frequency to match the minimum RMS transformer current in the full operating range. Furthermore, it incorporates a fully controlled burst-mode switching sequence for light loading conditions to further extend the efficiency gains. As a result, maximum efficiency is obtained by taking advantage of all the possible switching structures of the converter. The analysis provides insight into the natural trajectories of the converter, which produce soft-switching transitions and enable the converter structures to achieve the target operating point directly. Simulation and experimental results are presented to validate the benefits of the switching sequence and illustrate the burst-mode operation.

A range of different approaches to more stable PEMs based on Nafion have been studied of which composite materials of Nafion with mechanically stronger polymers is one of the most promising directions. If successful, they will lead to thinner composite PEMs with enhanced fuel cell performance, life span, and cost-effectiveness. Developed in this thesis are electrospinning conditions for the fabrication of electrospun mats for potential application in PEMs. Polysulfone (PSU), poly vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene (PVDF-HFP), and polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) were tested as mechanically stronger but inert (minimal contribution to proton transport) polymers that can tolerate the fuel cell condition. PVDF-HFP generated defect free electrospun mats over a wide range of spinning conditions, while PSU required very specific conditions and no successful conditions were found for PVDF mostly due to over-wetting. These mats might function as mechanical support and could be tested as PEMs when filled with Nafion, but the complete filling of electrospun mats with Nafion has been proven difficult. Instead, the electrospinning of Nafion was tested to explore options of electrospinning mixed mats of two different polymers and co-electrospinning of core-sheath fibers. Two commercial Nafion solutions D520 and D2020 with 5 wt% and 20 wt% content of Nafion were electrospun together with polyethylene oxide of two different molecular weights as a carrier polymer. Mats of sufficient quality for PEM tests were obtained with solutions based on 20 wt% content of Nafion, a low flow rate of 0.2 mL/h, and the lower molecular weight polyethylene oxide as the carrier. Finally, coaxial electrospinning conditions for the formation of core-sheath fibers were developed for Nafion as sheath material and PVDF-HFP or PSU as the core material. Defect-free, core-sheath fibers were generated when the concentration of both solutions was high (20 wt%), the Nafion flow rate was about 0.2 mL/h for the sheath, and the core flow rate was below the flow rate of the sheath (0.1-0.15 mL/h for PVDF-HFP and 0.15 mL/h for PSU). Mats of these core-sheath fibers should provide good mechanical strength combined with much better compatibility with Nafion. A straightforward pore filling with Nafion solutions is expected and their investigation as PEMs in fuel cells is planned as future work.

Abstract The essay stages the law at the intersections between the humanities, technology, and the production of digital space. Interactions like these are relevant in the present age, where humankind is outcompeting natural resources and changing the earth. The Anthropocene is an epoch of environmental crisis; despite this, we turn such a crisis into a process of sublimation servient to the control of the earth. Blurring the divide between the digital and the human is functional to such a process. The strategic use of the law makes climate-change policies compatible with global markets. Assuming that manufacturing digital spaces is useful to this end, the essay focuses on multimedia games. Blending real-word performances with internet- and media-related contents, they are functional to sublimation, convincing us that we can tackle climate change without rearranging our economic paradigms.

Global climatic energy balance has been increasingly altered by massive emissions of greenhouse gases (GHGs), such as carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), and nitrous oxide (N2O), leading to a variety of natural disturbances in terrestrial ecosystems. Further, the increasing use of fossil fuels and the looming climate crisis have created an unprecedented urgency for the development of a biobased circular economy. Therefore, production of biofuels from plant biomass is currently seen as a promising source of renewable energy, ensuring sustainable development with minimal carbon footprint. Soil acidification is considered one of the major obstacles to crop production and a significant source of GHGs emissions, especially N2O, because acidification changes the physicochemical and biochemical properties of the soil. Dolomite (DM) is the most widely used countermeasure to neutralize soil acidity to improve crop productivity and control net fluxes of GHGs. Nevertheless, the extent of GHG emissions following the application of DM under different environmental conditions is still unclear. Therefore, in this context, we conducted a meta-analysis using 32 peer-reviewed publications to determine the effects of DM, climate zones, and soil properties on GHGs emissions. The results of the current meta-analysis show that DM application significantly increased CO2 emissions (30.34 %) and CH4 emissions (4.91 %), but reduced N2O emissions by 54.88 %. A significant effect of DM (>10 t ha−1) on CO2, CH4, and N2O emissions was also observed. Increasing soil pH increased CO2 and N2O emissions by 188.34 % and 49.78 %, respectively, while reducing CH4 emissions by 81.94 %. Most importantly, WFPS, soil textural class, soil C:N ratio, and climate zones were identified as key edaphic factors affecting the GHG emissions following the application of DM. Abstract The voltammetric response of microparticulate deposits resulting from solvent evaporation of ethanolic extracts of mangrove sediments in contact with aqueous acetate buffer is hereby described. Dated sediment cores sampled from the Peruvian mangrove system (“Manglares de Tumbes” National Sanctuary) presented voltammetric responses dominated by oxidative signals of organic components that exhibit significant variations depending on the depth. Voltammetric data allowed for the definition of electrochemical indexes representative of the electrochemically oxidable organic matter fraction. These electrochemical indexes were fEAOM (for the total amount of organic matter being electrochemically active), fEROM (for the fraction of organic matter electrochemically oxidizable in reversible form), fRDOX (for the proportion between the fractions of electrochemically active organic matter which is in an oxidized state and in a reduced state) and fROS (capability for reaction with reactive oxygen species), while the spectroscopic index A1650/A3400 (as a proxy analogous to fRDOX) was also applied. The mangrove forest presents a higher oxidized fraction of the electrochemically active organic matter, as confirmed by additional data obtained from infrared spectroscopy. These results indicate that the described electrochemical indexes may provide insights on organic matter degradation by oxidative processes in addition to chemical analyses of coastal vegetated systems that are currently used, such as mangrove wetlands.
