    An extensive experimental investigation was carried out to study the energy absorbing characteristics and progressive deformation behavior of unidirectional pultruded composite tubes subjected to an axial impact load. Pultruded square and circular profiles with glass-polyester and glass-vinylester combinations were used to study the specific energy absorption characteristics. Two types of triggering profiles were incorporated to investigate the effect of triggering on energy absorption. All the above combinations were investigated for three impact velocities. The effects of geometry profile, triggering and strain rate on energy absorption of composite tubes were studied in detail. A numerical simulation using finite element method was carried out to assess the energy absorption capability of composite tubes. To model the delamination between the composite plies, a new approach was adopted using cohesive elements. The progressive failure modes and crushing characteristics of the composite tubes are presented. From these studies, the composite tubes can be considered as energy absorbing members for impact applications.

    Trabajo Fin de Grado leído en la Universidad Rey Juan Carlos en el curso académico 2022/2023. Directores/as: Fabiola Gómez Jorge ; Tobacco companies have faced numerous challenges and pressures, from increased awareness of health risks associated with smoking to stringent regulations and changing societal attitudes towards tobacco consumption. By embracing change proactively, the tobacco industry can navigate these challenges more effectively and position itself for long-term success. Instead of waiting until circumstances force them to change, tobacco companies have chosen to adapt their business models, diversify their product offerings, and invest in alternative sectors that align with evolving consumer preferences and public health concerns. This paper presents a deep dive analysis on the tobacco industry transformation journey, from key stakeholders, such as, consumers, company employees, health organizations, and governments¿ point of view, to better understand the rational of this transformation process and the status of the change.

    There is a growing need to assist those who have suffered an amputation due to vascular diseases, especially in those who have general lower limb weakness and need additional assistance to retain independence and overall quality of life. The CYBERLEGs system is a new artificial physical and cognitive lower-limb replacement system for dysvascular transfemoral amputees intended for assistance in activities of daily living. By lowering the cognitive and metabolic effort of using a prosthetic system, CYBERLEGs is intended to increase the number of amputees using prosthetic systems as well as expand the capabilities of those who use currently available technology.

    The important task (NBI neutral beam injector for fusion) and the complexity of radiofrequency ion source need large tests (as ELISE and SPIDER) and intermediate scale tests (as NIO1 in this poster) for optimization. Conditioning (with gas) was found necessary in Cs-free operation. Cs-based operation has begun: stability improves at lower oven temperature; in both cases, lateral view cameras show beam quality. Energy recovery plugin almost ready for NIO1 (or at a test station at TRIPS).

    This study aimed to evaluate the potential of microalgae grown in wastewater to recover carotenoids and biogas in a biorefinery approach. To this end, two pilot raceway ponds treating real wastewater were operated with a hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 8 and 6 days. The maximum total carotenoid content in harvested biomass was 4.3 mg·gDW-1 with a HRT of 8 days, while it stabilized at 1.5–2.2 mg·gDW-1 with a HRT of 6 days. Biochemical methane potential tests were then run to quantify the biogas production from carotenoid-extracted biomass (136.3 mLCH4·gVS-1), which corresponded to 86% of the methane yield achievable from raw microalgal biomass. Co-digestion with primary sludge increased the methane yield production both for raw and carotenoid-extracted biomass by 58 and 86%, respectively, when a 75:25 ratio was employed and by 28 and 44%, respectively, when a 50:50 ratio (VS basis) was used. This approach is promising for recovering resources (bio-based products and bioenergy) in the framework of a circular bioeconomy. Sustainable agriculture leads today to important questions about the diversification of agricultural production and sources of income for farmers, the use of rural and arable land for food and non-food crops, the contribution of agriculture to climate change fighting and the supply of renewable energy. Bioenergy from agriculture is at the heart of these concerns, integrating sustainable development key components: environment and climate change, energy economics and energy supply, agriculture, rural and social development. The lack of primary and reliable data on bioenergy externalities from agriculture and the lack of decision-making tools are important non-technological barriers to the development of bioenergy from agriculture on a large scale, and, consequently, to the achievement of the national and regional objectives of sustainable development with respect to greenhouse gas mitigation, secure and diversified energy supply, rural development and employment and the future of agriculture. Furthermore, the recent worldwide controversies about transport biofuels, food shortages and increasing prices have demonstrated the urgent need for sustainability criteria applied to biofuels and bioenergy. Within this current sustainable development framework, a project entitled TEXBIAG integrating experts from 4 research institutions is financed by the Belgian Science Policy. The final objective of this project is to lead to an actual and significant contribution of bioenergy from agriculture to the mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions, to a secure and diversified energy supply and to farmers' incomes and rural development. To reach this final objective, the project develops three specific tools: (1) a database of primary quantitative data related to environmental and socio-economic impacts of bioenergy from agriculture integrating biomass logistics; (2) a mathematical model monetizing bioenergy externalities from agriculture; and (3) a prediction tool assessing the impacts of political decisions made in the framework ofthe development of bioenergy from agriculture on different economic sectors (energy, agriculture, industry, and environment). An integrated interface tool will be programmed where access to and update of the three tools will be prepared. The project methodology will be conducted for a given number of scenarios with sensitivity analysis wherever possible. The three main target groups that will benefit from the project are: the government officials and policy makers in the field of agriculture, energy and environment in Belgium and its two main regions, the small, medium and large energy companies and the agricultural sector

    Authors: Sánchez García, Paula;

    [ES] El sistema agroalimentario atraviesa un período de transición debido a diversas tensiones ambientales, económicas y sociales. En este contexto, las políticas implementadas por los diferentes países europeos juegan un papel fundamental. Esta tesis tiene como objetivo analizar diferentes herramientas políticas disponibles para los diferentes actores de la cadena agroalimentaria con el objetivo de proporcionar una comprensión integral del panorama político y regulatorio actual en Europa. Este trabajo está enmarcado en el proyecto EU VISIONARY, creado para mejorar la sostenibilidad de la agricultura europea mediante la promoción de prácticas ambientalmente amigables, económicamente viables y socioculturalmente apropiadas en los sistemas agroalimentarios. Se analizan las herramientas políticas identificadas y seleccionadas en varios de los países participantes en el proyecto VISIONARY (Reino Unido, Hungría, Alemania, Rumanía, Polonia, España, Italia y Dinamarca), considerando su hibridación e interdependencia y cómo interactúan con los diferentes actores del sistema agroalimentario. Para lograr esto, se realiza una revisión de la literatura sobre el marco actual de la política agraria dentro de la Unión Europea, considerando las últimas dinámicas como el Pacto Verde Europeo, las estrategias de Biodiversidad y De la Granja a la Mesa . Paralelamente, se tabulan los datos recopilados (93 herramientas de políticas), seguido de un análisis de correspondencia múltiple para identificar interacciones significativas entre las diferentes variables. Tras analizar y presentar los resultados, se constata que la mayoría de las intervenciones están relacionadas con la Política Agrícola Común (PAC), están alineadas con las estrategias europeas y están dirigidas principalmente a los agricultores. Además, las principales formas de acción son las regulaciones directas y los incentivos económicos. [EN] The agri-food system is going through a transition period due to environmental, economic, and social tensions. In this context, policies implemented by European countries play a vital role. This Master thesis aims to analyze different policy tools available to agri-food chain stakeholders to provide a comprehensive understanding of the current political and regulatory landscape in Europe. This work is part of the EU VISIONARY project, which was created to improve the sustainability of European agriculture by promoting environmentally friendly, economically viable, and socioculturally appropriate practices in food systems. The political tools identified and selected by some of the countries participating in the VISIONARY project (United Kingdom, Hungary, Germany, Romania, Poland, Spain, Italy, and Denmark) are analyzed, considering their hybridization and interdependency and how they interact with the different actors of the agri-food system. To achieve this analysis, a literature review of the current agricultural policy framework within the European Union is conducted, considering the latest dynamics such as The Green Deal, the Farm to Fork , and Biodiversity strategies. Additionally, the collected data (93 policy tools) is tabulated, followed by a multiple correspondence analysis to identify significant intersections between different variables. After analyzing and presenting the results, it was found that most interventions are related to the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP), are aligned with European strategies, and are primarily aimed at farmers. Furthermore, the primary forms of action are directregulations and economic incentives.
