    Societal relations in rural areas have entered into a new stage of adjustment over the past decade. However, the adjustment, which might bring about profound societal changes in countryside as well as in China as a whole, have not been paid much attention and very few studies have been conducted from the perspective of ecological resource crises. We use the case of a village as an example to show how water pollution, as one of the contributory factors, possibly affect the transition of clans and societal changes in Chinese villages. Through observation and interviews, we find that there is an apparent rise of “New Clanism” within clans, which gradually abandons the tradition of supremacy of clan interests and places family or individual interests at top priority. We also find that clan boundaries get increasingly obscure since the integrity of clans is undermined by the rise of new interest groups across clans, but the boundaries remain relatively clear due to the consistency (albeit incomplete) of clan interests. Some new clan élites and representatives of new interest groups get involved in village governance, which indicates that their goals have shifted from natural resources to social or political capital. The significance of our findings is that they provide not only a unique perspective for the interaction between society and resources, but also some new ideas for the future study of rural China at the environment-social interface.

    AbstractArctic plant communities are altered by climate changes. The magnitude of these alterations depends on whether species distributions are determined by macroclimatic conditions, by factors related to local topography, or by biotic interactions. Our current understanding of the relative importance of these conditions is limited due to the scarcity of studies, especially in the High Arctic. We investigated variations in vascular plant community composition and species richness based on 288 plots distributed on three sites along a coast‐inland gradient in Northeast Greenland using a stratified random design. We used an information theoretic approach to determine whether variations in species richness were best explained by macroclimate, by factors related to local topography (including soil water) or by plant‐plant interactions. Latent variable models were used to explain patterns in plant community composition. Species richness was mainly determined by variations in soil water content, which explained 35% of the variation, and to a minor degree by other variables related to topography. Species richness was not directly related to macroclimate. Latent variable models showed that 23.0% of the variation in community composition was explained by variables related to topography, while distance to the inland ice explained an additional 6.4 %. This indicates that some species are associated with environmental conditions found in only some parts of the coast–inland gradient. Inclusion of macroclimatic variation increased the model's explanatory power by 4.2%. Our results suggest that the main impact of climate changes in the High Arctic will be mediated by their influence on local soil water conditions. Increasing temperatures are likely to cause higher evaporation rates and alter the distribution of late‐melting snow patches. This will have little impact on landscape‐scale diversity if plants are able to redistribute locally to remain in areas with sufficient soil water.

    Soils in arid and semi-arid environments are threatened by salinization. A cost-effective and efficient way to reclaim saline land is through leaching. This will be most effective in situations where direct human impact is the cause for salinity, e.g., in environments affected by industrial use or land rehabilitation following mining. Irrigation, which is the most common means of achieving salt leaching, is not feasible for the reclamation of mine sites’ salt-affected soils located in remote areas, and thus, land reclamation largely relies on natural climatic conditions. This study was conducted to assess the effect of different climatic conditions of semi-arid environments on spatio-temporal salt leaching from brine-affected soil, and investigate the efficacy of the reduction of soil bulk density as a reclamation technique for saline land experiencing water scarcity. Three regions (represented by the Australian cities of Roma, Mount Isa, and Quilpie) representing semi-arid environments of Australia were selected, and their climatic scenarios (23 years) were applied to a validated HYDRUS-1D model. A brine-affected soil typical to Queensland, Australia, was chosen for this study. The investigations established that a greater number of individual high rainfall events resulted in a greater reduction of salinity in Roma (96%) and Mount Isa (93.31%) compared with Quilpie (58.75%), in which the soil salinity approached a level (<2 dS m−1) that was suitable for sustaining plant growth. Soil salinity reduced to 8 dS m−1 under the climatic conditions of the Quilpie region. This study also demonstrated that the success of salt leaching from a brine-affected soil is a consequence of a sensitive response to the depth of individual rainfall events rather than rainfall distribution and the total amount of rainfall, and is controlled by the physical properties of the soil. Where climatic conditions cannot solely assist with salt leaching, reclamation may be successful by reducing soil bulk density.

    AbstractHieracium pilosella and H. aurantiacum are invading alpine regions in New South Wales, Australia. In a glasshouse experiment we investigated germination and growth rates of these two species at temperatures simulating the altitudes where invasions are occurring from autumn to spring. We measured germination rates, growth rates and the development of stolons and ramets using seedlings and plantlets from established plants. Germination was low in H. aurantiacum and unaffected by altitude or seed age. H. pilosella showed site to site variability in germination but had greater germination. No species produced flower spikes. Both species grew rapidly and put at least twice as much biomass into roots compared to shoots. H. aurantiacum could begin to produce stolons after 27 days and seedlings grew a little larger than for H. pilosella. Hieracium aurantiacum put significantly more resources into ramets, allocating between 4–15% of biomass. H. pilosella produced 2.6 stolons month−1, in contrast to 9.8 stolons month−1 for H. aurantiacum. Furthermore, plantlets from established plants had vastly different growth rates. Plantlets of H. aurantiacum produced 2.1 leaves day−1 from late summer to winter where H. pilosella was 3 times slower for the same period but faster following winter. Both species were able to maintain strong growth over cooler months suggesting hawkweeds have the capacity for fast growth in the invaded range under high nutrients and lower competition. H. aurantiacum is likely to be a more effective invader than H. pilosella spreading through stolons and the development of weed mats.

    This thesis is a comparative study of carbon and nitrogen flux dynamics following sole and combined application of mango leaf litter mulch and inorganic fertiliser in highly weathered tropical mango orchard soils. In doing so, the thesis investigated litter decomposition dynamics and litter carbon mass balance and provided baseline datasets of seasonal and annual reactive nitrogen losses (through hydrological and gaseous pathways) under the tropical environmental conditions of Northern Territory Australia.

    Abstract Plant species that expand their range in response to current climate change will encounter soil communities that may hinder, allow or even facilitate plant performance. It has been shown repeatedly for plant species originating from other continents that these plants are less hampered by soil communities from the new than from the original range. However, information about the interactions between intra‐continental range expanders and soil communities is sparse, especially at community level. Here we used a plant–soil feedback experiment approach to examine if the interactions between range expanders and soil communities change during range expansion. We grew communities of range‐expanding and native plant species with soil communities originating from the original and new range of range expanders. In these conditioned soils, we determined the composition of fungi and bacteria by high‐throughput amplicon sequencing of the ITS region and the 16S rRNA gene respectively. Nematode community composition was determined by microscopy‐based morphological identification. Then we tested how these soil communities influence the growth of subsequent communities of range expanders and natives. We found that after the conditioning phase soil bacterial, fungal and nematode communities differed by origin and by conditioning plant communities. Despite differences in bacterial, fungal and nematode communities between original and new range, soil origin did not influence the biomass production of plant communities. Both native and range expanding plant communities produced most above‐ground biomass in soils that were conditioned by plant communities distantly related to them. Synthesis. Communities of range‐expanding plant species shape specific soil communities in both original and new range soil. Plant–soil interactions of range expanders in communities can be similar to the ones of their closely related native plant species.

    Reducing methane (CH4) emission from paddy rice production is an important target for many Asian countries in order to comply with their climate policy commitments. National greenhouse gas (GHG) inventory approaches like the Tier-2 approach of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) are useful to assess country-scale emissions from the agricultural sector. In paddy rice, alternate wetting and drying (AWD) is a promising and well-studied water management technique which, as shown in experimental studies, can effectively reduce CH4 emissions. However, so far little is known about GHG emission rates under AWD when the technique is fully controlled by farmers. This study assesses CH4 and nitrous oxide (N2O) fluxes under continuous flooded (CF) and AWD treatments for seven subsequent seasons on farmers’ fields in a pumped irrigation system in Central Luzon, Philippines. Under AWD management, CH4 emissions were substantially reduced (73% in dry season (DS), 21% in wet season (WS)). In all treatments, CH4 is the major contributor to the total GHG emission and is, thus, identified as the driving force to the global warming potential (GWP). The contribution of N2O emissions to the GWP was higher in CF than in AWD, however, these only offset 15% of the decrease in CH4 emission and, therefore, did not jeopardize the strong reduction in the GWP. The study proves the feasibility of AWD under farmers’ management as well as the intended mitigation effect. Resulting from this study, it is recommended to incentivize dissemination strategies in order to improve the effectiveness of mitigation initiatives. A comparison of single CH4 emissions to calculated emissions with the IPCC Tier-2 inventory approach identified that, although averaged values showed a sufficient degree of accuracy, fluctuations for single measurement points have high variation which limit the use of the method for field-level assessments.

    Coral reefs are vulnerable to the impacts of global climate change (e.g rising sea temperature) as well as to numerous local disturbances (e.g overfishing). In combination, these impacts are known to degrade coral reefs, compromising critical ecosystem functions and leading to the potential loss of biodiversity and associated ecosystem services. Management aims to minimise these negative effects but is challenged by substantial uncertainty about the relative contribution and interactions among the various types of stressors on coral reefs. One of the most widely applied management tools on coral reefs are Marine Protected Areas (MPAs). MPAs restrict certain or all types of human activities within their boundaries and are aimed at rebuilding degraded habitats, maintaining ecosystem functions, and protecting healthy reefs to ensure the continued provision of ecosystem services. However, using MPAs effectively requires an understanding of their optimal placement to ensure the conservation of biodiversity and ecological functions in support of local communities and stakeholders. My thesis addresses this topic by developing a novel marine spatial planning approach that integrates reef ecosystem services explicitly into the decision-making process.The first chapter of my thesis is a general introduction that provides an overview of current scientific knowledge about the vulnerability of coral reefs and how these ecosystems are likely to respond to various impacts from global and local stressors. Chapter 2 is focused on investigating the response of coral communities to global and local disturbances more explicitly by using an ecological model to examine the impacts of sea surface temperature, local thermal stress, cyclone, fishing pressure, nutrient enrichment and crown of thorns starfish (CoTS) outbreaks on reefs under alternative climate scenarios by examining applied to Indonesian coral reefs. We used three greenhouse gas emissions (Representative concentration pathway - RCP8.5, RCP4.5, and RCP2.6) for the scenarios of climate change. Reefs are likely to experience further declines in coral cover under all alternative scenarios of climate change and local thermal regimes, but with varied rates of decline in different geographic locations. Management benefits were greater under the more pessimistic greenhouse gas emission scenario RCP8.5 and management of two local stressors with complementary ecological targets (i.e., coral recruitment and adult mortality) provided greater benefits than utilizing tools with similar modes of action. For example, combining approaches that targeted CoTS and either fishing or nutrients, that affect adult mortality and recruitment (respectively), had far greater efficacy than targeting the duality of fishing and nutrients, which both influence recruitment only. The results provide new insight into the importance of applying management tools that address different ecological processes.In Chapter 3, I establish a generally applicable MPA design approach to reconcile multiple reef ecosystem services under explicit consideration of local community needs. Using Selayar Island, South Sulawesi (Indonesia) as a case study, I found that the design of MPAs to address all three ecosystem services – biodiversity, fisheries productivity, and coastal protection – proved challenging. Relatively few reefs exhibit high values of all three services and optimization software is needed to seek network locations that achieve reasonable trade-offs between services. Local fishers valued fisheries benefits over biodiversity and coastal protection. Finding MPA networks that deliver fishers’ preferences was particularly difficult if attempting to include the highest levels of fisheries benefit. Compromising on the magnitude of fishery benefits provided much greater flexibility in the choice of MPA networks that delivered moderately high benefits across all services. Moreover, it becomes more challenging to find good solutions as the target level of MPA coverage increases from 10% to 30%, implying that fewer good solutions occur.In Chapter 4, I examine the extent to which governance factors and management processes, such as involvement of the local community in conservation planning and prior experience with MPAs, influence the perceived benefits of MPAs for fisheries. I incorporate governance factors and preferred MPA distribution based on interviews of local fisher communities. The results reveal that the better engagement of the community into the MPA planning process and governance of MPAs lead to a more positive perception of MPA benefits by fishers. Yet fishers’ perceptions of MPAs were more nuanced. Generally, the perceptions were less positive (1) in fishers that fish more frequently, and (2) fishers operating larger boats that include pelagic fishing (cf. fishers using small-scale artisanal methods). It is hypothesized that pelagic fishers are less invested in the benefits of MPAs and that fishers operating more frequently might be less likely to notice modest changes in productivity should it occur.I also asked whether fishers with a more positive perception of MPA benefits would be more likely to locate future MPAs closer to their fishing grounds. However, this simple hypothesis was not supported. Fishers in Selayar recommend a minimum average distance of ~5 km of MPAs from fishing grounds while people involved in MPA planning tended to suggest distances about 8 km farther from fishing grounds. The absence of a simple relationship between fisher perceptions and the separation of MPA-fishing grounds implies that other – unmeasured – factors are responsible. In general, our findings emphasize the importance of incorporating governance processes and social factors into MPA designation.In Chapter 5, I review my conclusions and consider their broader implications and needs for further work. Prioritising multiple reefs for multiple ecosystem services is challenging and therefore the use of optimisation software is necessary to find suites of MPAs that can meet such diverse objectives. A willingness to compromise on the absolute magnitude of fisheries benefits – the ecosystem service of the greatest value to the community – led to far greater flexibility in finding MPA solutions. Overall, tackling more complex sets of objectives is feasible but requires the use of standard optimisation software to select reasonable solutions. Yet management implementation, such as MPA design, requires good governance and an increasing reliance on sophisticated tools has the potential to undermine the transparency and inclusivity of the implementation process. Future studies will need to consider the communication of tools usage as well as the development of frameworks to apply the tools effectively.

    Fire danger indices are descriptors of fire potential in a large area, and combine a few variables that affect the initiation, spread and control of forest fires. The Canadian Fire Weather Index (FWI) is one of the most widely used fire danger indices in the world, and it is built upon instantaneous values of temperature, relative humidity and wind velocity at noon, together with 24 hourly accumulated precipitation. However, the scarcity of appropriate data has motivated the use of daily mean values as surrogates of the instantaneous ones in several studies that aimed to assess the impact of global warming on fire. In this paper we test the sensitivity of FWI values to both instantaneous and daily mean values, analyzing their effect on mean seasonal fire danger (seasonal severity rating, SSR) and extreme fire danger conditions (90th percentile, FWI90, and FWI>30, FOT30), with a special focus on its influence in climate change impact studies. To this aim, we analyzed reanalysis and regional climate model (RCM) simulations, and compared the resulting instantaneous and daily mean versions both in the present climate and in a future scenario. In particular, we were interested in determining the effect of these datasets on the projected changes obtained for the mean and extreme seasonal fire danger conditions in future climate scenarios, as given by a RCM. Overall, our results warn against the use of daily mean data for the computation of present and future fire danger conditions. Daily mean data lead to systematic negative biases of fire danger calculations. Although the mean seasonal fire danger indices might be corrected to compensate for this bias, fire danger extremes (FWI90 and specially FOT30) cannot be reliably transformed to accommodate the spatial pattern and magnitude of their respective instantaneous versions, leading to inconsistent results when projected into the future. As a result, we advocate caution when using daily mean data and strongly recommend the application of the standard definition for its calculation as closely as possible. Threshold-dependent indices derived from FWI are not reliably represented by the daily mean version and thus can neither be applied for the estimation of future fire danger season length and severity, nor for the estimation of future extreme events.
