Trends within Northern Hemisphere surface waters indicate that natural organic matter (NOM) concentrations are rising not only due to historical, acid-deposition based influence, but more recently due to climate change. The accumulation of NOM in reservoirs is detrimental to potable water supply and erodes the success and capacity of existing treatment infrastructure. In recent years, the Australian East Coast has experienced a rapid succession of high temperatures, rainfall deficiencies, drought, fire, intense rainfall, and flooding. Such events have the ability to convey changes to the way NOM is fluxed to aquatic systems and how NOM is cycled and stored within reservoirs. The aim of this thesis was to assess the role of climatic variation on the susceptibility for reservoirs in Greater Sydney to accumulate NOM. An assessment of the historical record of all six major surface water storage reservoirs in Greater Sydney using a combined hierarchical clustering and principal component analysis technique, has indicated for the first time that these systems are browning from accumulating DOC. Subsequent determinations of changepoints in this historical record combined with extensive temporal cross examination of climatological drivers, deduced browning was influenced by intensive precipitation events which translated to intense and rapid reservoir recharge. A comprehensive assessment of the physical and chemical properties of NOM within the Nepean catchment (Sydney, Australia, n = 656) by fluorescence spectroscopy and liquid-chromatography with organic carbon detection (LC-OCD), deduced only minor NOM compositional change occurred across drought and intensive rainfall events. A similar assessment of the fire impacted Warragamba catchment (Sydney, Australia) concluded that fire impacted particulate organic matter held significant quantities of leachable dissolved organic matter. Overall, it was concluded that climate driven increases in precipitation intensity will drive an increased frequency and observance of browner reservoir systems due to higher NOM concentrations, but this will not equate to large compositional shifts in the underlying physical and chemical properties of NOM within a catchment system.

Chhabra; This work sets out to investigate the effect of confining walls on the settling velocity of variously shaped rigid particles in stationary Newtonian liquids. Cubes, parallelepipeds, cylinders, needles, thin plates and circular discs of different sizes and made of different materials (1200–7800 kg/m3) have been sedimented in scores of liquids in cyclindrical tubes of different inside diameters (20–100 mm). The retardation effect due to the presence of bounding walls has been quantified in terms of a wall factor which is a function only of particle size and shape, and tube diameter in the low Reynolds number region ( <7). Simple expressions are presented that not only correlate well the present results but also describe satisfactorily the scant literature data.

The pathogenesis of alcoholic liver disease (ALD) remains uncertain. Fibrin production and degradation are altered in experimental liver injury. We have recently identified increased expression of a number of genes (annexin A2 (ANXA2), p11, tPA and PAI-1) that implicate fibrinolysis in ALD progression. Aim of our study was to study the direct effect of alcohol on fibrinolysis and plasmin activity in hepatic cell lines and in vivo.Expression of pro- and anti-fibrinolytic genes was determined in liver biopsies from patients with progressive ALD and in HepG2, Huh7 and LX-2 cells exposed to alcohol. The functional effects on fibrinolysis and plasmin activities were determined. C57BL6 female mice were given a single dose of alcohol and serum and liver triglyceride content and serum plasmin activity determined.Alcohol induced a significant up-regulation of ANXA2, PLG, PAI-1 and p11 in human ALD, cell lines and in mice exposed to alcohol. Up-regulation of ANXA2 and p11 was inhibited by the alcohol dehydrogenase inhibitor 4-methylpyrazole. Fibrinolysis and plasmin were increased in HepG2 and LX-2 cells by 10mM alcohol and was inhibited by ANXA2 blocking antibody. Plasmin also increased in mice given a moderate dose of alcohol. By contrast, there was striking up-regulation of PAI-1 in mice given a high dose of alcohol with associated decrease in plasmin.Alcohol directly alters hepatic expression of pro- and anti-fibrinolytic genes in a dose dependent manner with low dose promoting fibrinolysis and high dose inhibiting fibrinolysis. After a large dose of alcohol in vivo, the dominant effect was up-regulation of hepatic PAI-1 with suppression of plasmin. The effect of alcohol on fibrinolysis and plasmin is mediated in part by ANXA2. Alcohol directly influences hepatic pathways of fibrinolysis that may contribute to ALD.

The primary question explored by this thesis is what alternative, carbon tax or emissions trading, would be an optimal policy for climate change mitigation in Australia. This thesis focuses on assessing carbon tax and emissions trading policy options on the basis of multiple criteria related to climate change policy in the Australian context. The study analyses the issues of environmental degradation, policy responses to the climate change issue, carbon taxation and emissions trading as a theoretical foundation for addressing the research question. The weaknesses of common evaluation methods and practices in dealing with climate change policy are also critiqued. After reviewing policy evaluation methods, the study builds a methodological framework to assess the climate change policy options based on the multi-criteria and Delphi methods. To facilitate the evaluation procedure, the criteria necessary for the climate change policy evaluation are identified. This study employs the Delphi method to verify the evaluation criteria in the Australian context and to assess the relative importance of these criteria. The thesis also attempts to construct carbon tax and emissions trading policies for Australia using a combination of theoretical and practical considerations. Further, these two contrasting policies are qualitatively analysed with reference to the identified criteria to assess potential performance of the proposed carbon tax and emissions trading. The resultant evaluation criteria and performance ranks of each proposed policy option allows building a decision matrix which facilitates the final evaluation and selection of an optimal policy. The evaluation results reveal that the carbon tax policy constructed by this study outperforms the designed emissions trading in terms of many criteria. As a result, the carbon tax is identified as an optimal climate change mitigation policy for Australia. The results of this study also indicate that the emissions trading proposed by the Australian Government might be a misleading policy founded on biased assumptions. Based on these findings it is recommended that Australia reconsider carbon tax and emissions trading policies on the basis of well developed multiple criteria to obtain a justified and sustained policy solution.

In grid-connected photovoltaic (PV) power stations, improving the life expectancy and long-term reliability of three-phase PV inverters is urgently needed to match the significantly higher lifetime of the PV modules. A key contribution toward such improvement is replacing the conventional electrolytic film capacitors by metallized polypropylene film ones. This paper presents a detailed evaluation of a conventional three-phase grid-connected PV inverter performance when replacing the electrolytic capacitor with a minimum value of metallized polypropylene film capacitor. Although the minimum dc bus capacitance leads to higher voltage ripples, such ripples were found to be within acceptable limits to operate the inverter satisfactorily. Simulation and experimental results are presented for a 5-kW grid-connected inverter prototype with a nominal dc voltage of 457 V to confirm the theoretical considerations. Peer Reviewed

Overall, close to 10.000 cells have been manufactured with efficiencies up to 21,1%. From theses HJT cells, 60-cell modules have been produced. Temperature coefficient measurements of both cells and modules have been conducted by independent institutes, resulting in outstanding -0,20%/K and -0,22%/K, respectively. The modules have been deployed on an outdoor test field in Mid-European climate conditions for over 1 year. The results demonstrate the durability of the HJT modules and comparison with standard crystalline modules show an increase of energy yield of up to 7% on sunny days already in spring time. Under hot climate conditions in southern regions this increase is supposed to be even higher, making HJT modules extremely suitable for southern climates and low LCOE´s. 28th European Photovoltaic Solar Energy Conference and Exhibition; 1887-1889

In this study, a multi-fluid BF model is adopted to study hydrogen shaft injection's influence on in-furnace phenomena and BF performance, including flow-thermal-chemical behaviors and fossil fuel rate saving. The computational domain includes the industrial-scale BF regions from the slag surface in the hearth to the stock line near the furnace top, and the study is carried out under a fixed bosh gas flow rate. The simulation results show that compared with regular BF operation, hydrogen shaft injection can considerably affect BF performance, including the gas flow field, thermal field, and reduction behaviors. It is found that, as the injection rate increases, the penetration depth of hydrogen shows an increasing trend; the apex of cohesive zone shifts to a higher position with a more concave-shaped profile; moreover, both the reduction degree of iron oxides and thermal conditions in the shaft can be improved, which are accompanied with a significantly decreased fossil fuel rate. This study provides a quantitative tool to understand and optimize the hydrogen shaft injection into BFs towards a low-carbon ironmaking process.

Abstract. Stable isotope records from speleothems provide information on past climate changes, most particularly information that can be used to reconstruct past changes in precipitation and atmospheric circulation. These records are increasingly being used to provide “out-of-sample” evaluations of isotope-enabled climate models. SISAL (Speleothem Isotope Synthesis and Analysis) is an international working group of the Past Global Changes (PAGES) project. The working group aims to provide a comprehensive compilation of speleothem isotope records for climate reconstruction and model evaluation. The SISAL database contains data for individual speleothems, grouped by cave system. Stable isotopes of oxygen and carbon (δ18O, δ13C) measurements are referenced by distance from the top or youngest part of the speleothem. Additional tables provide information on dating, including information on the dates used to construct the original age model and sufficient information to assess the quality of each data set and to erect a standardized chronology across different speleothems. The metadata table provides location information, information about the full range of measurements carried out on each speleothem and information about the cave system that is relevant to the interpretation of the records, as well as citations for both publications and archived data. The compiled data are available at http://dx.doi.org/10.17864/1947.139.

Abstract In this paper, a recent optimization algorithm called Equilibrium Optimizer (EO) is first improved using a linear reduction diversity technique (LRD) and local minima elimination method (MEM). The improved EO (IEO) reduces the diversity of the population until enabling them to get better solutions. This method is centered around improving the particles with the worst fitness values within the population by moving them toward the best-so-far solution as an attempt to increase the convergence toward the near-optimal solution. As a side effect, LRD increases the probability of entrapment into local minima if it could not find a better solution. Therefore, another method known as local minima elimination method (MEM) is used to take the current solution either within the boundaries of two particles selected randomly or within the search boundaries of the problem itself. The extensive comparative experiments demonstrate that the proposed IEO is competitive and often superior compared to recent algorithms. We applied the proposed IEO algorithm to R.T.C France commercial solar cells using a single diode model (SDM), the double diode model (DDM), and three photovoltaic (PV) modules in addition to two commercial ones.

Koschier; Most presently manufactured bulk photovoltaic devices suffer from poor rear surface recombination velocities which limit the achievable efficiencies. In order to overcome this efficiency limitation, an innovative approach to redesigning the rear contact has been sought. The Buried Contact Solar Cell (BCSC) has been chosen as the basis for this study as this technology has been proven to be superior in performance to other commercially available bulk technologies. The new rear contacting scheme has been devised with improved experimental devices demonstrated. It utilises a process known as Metal Mediated Epitaxial Growth (MMEG) to achieve an improved Back Surface Field (BSF). This device design can also take advantage of the thyristor structure by utilising the p + region formed by MMEG in conjunction with the n-p-n structure unavoidably produced during most manufacturing processes. Results indicate that superior rear surface passivation can be achieved using this process and design. Higher open circuit voltages in the vicinity of 30-40 m V have been achieved relative to the conventional BCSC, indicating that higher efficiency devices are possible.
