description Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Article , Journal 2017Publisher:Elsevier BV Funded by:NSERCNSERCChunbao (Charles) Xu; Chunbao (Charles) Xu; Shanghuan Feng; Gang Chen; An Li; Zhongshun Yuan; Takashi Kuboki; Tao Shui; Hengfu Shui;Abstract In this study, crude cellulose derived from cornstalk, after bleaching, was used as raw material for the synthesis of sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) by reacting with the cellulose with NaOH and chloroacetic acid at 75 °C for 1.5 h. Effects of alkali dosage, concentration of chloroacetic acid on the physical and chemical properties of the CMC products were investigated. It was revealed that the reactants alkali reagent/chloroacetic acid/cellulose at the molar ratio of 4.6:2.8:1and 4:2.5:1, or at the molar ratio of NaOH/ClCH 2 COOH ≈1.6–1.64, resulted in CMC products of relatively high water solubility. The viscosity-average molecular weight M v of these two CMC products obtained at molar ratios of 4.0:2.5:1 and 4.6:2.8:1 is in the range of 1.94 × 10 4 –2.48 × 10 4 g mol −1 , and the average DS of the two products are 0.57 and 0.85, respectively. As the solute concentration is above 2 wt%, the viscosity of the CMC-water solution exhibits nonlinear (exponential) increasing with increasing the solute concentration (typical of non-Newton fluids).

A detailed analysis of the effects of ground grid configuration on grounding performance has been carried out for uniform and horizontally stratified soils with multiple layers. The results of the analysis reveal that the most efficient and cost-effective design is highly dependent on soil structure type and characteristics. In the absence of ground rods, grounding grids with uniform mesh size are quite efficient in soils having a thin (relative to grid size) high resistivity (relative to the lower layers) top soil, while grids with small mesh size at the periphery of the grid provide optimum performance in uniform soils and soils with low resistivity top soils. Ground rods were found to be effective only when a significant portion of their length is in contact with a low resistivity soil, as expected.

Experiments were carried out to determine the accuracy and validity of estimations of hepatic blood flow from systemic clearances of ethanol during very low dose (8 μmol∙min−1∙kg−1) infusions of ethanol in anesthetized cats. Systemic clearances were compared with directly measured hepatic blood flow using a hepatic venous long-circuit technique. This technique allowed direct measurement and alteration of hepatic blood flow and collection of arterial, portal, and hepatic venous blood samples without depletion of the animal's blood volume. In 18 cats, Vmax for ethanol was 93 ± 7 μmol∙min−1 per 100 g liver or 21 ± 2 μmol∙min−1∙kg·body weight−1 and Km was 144 ± 19 μM in terms of logarithmic mean sinusoidal concentration. At the dose of 8 μmol∙min−1∙kg body weight−1 used for estimation of hepatic blood flow, extraction was 0.95 ± 0.07 (mean ± SD). Systemic clearance of ethanol overestimated directly measured hepatic blood flow by 15 ± 16%. Hepatic blood flow changes expressed as percentages of the control level were accurately estimated from systemic ethanol clearance (100 ± 10%). Since 73 ± 12% of the infused ethanol was eliminated by the liver and 83 ± 11% was eliminated by the splanchnic bed, an extrasplanchnic uptake of 17% accounted for the overestimation of hepatic blood flow. Estimation of hepatic blood flow from systemic clearances of ethanol during very low dose infusions may have advantages over other clearance methods. Its use in cats was illustrated in a separate series of experiments and it was shown that surgery significantly reduced hepatic blood flow. The method may merit trial for estimation of hepatic blood flow in humans.

Response surface methodology (RSM) based on central composite design (CCD) was employed to optimize four process parameters: NCO/OH molar ratio, loading of crosslinking agent (glycerol), loading of catalyst (a mixture of triethylene diamine, stannous octoate, and triethanolamine), and loading of blowing agent (water) for the maximum compression strength of the rigid BPU foams. With the quadratic orthogonal regression model, verified by experimentation, the maximum compression strength of approximately 180 kPa was obtained at the following optimal conditions: NCO/OH molar ratio of 1.24:1, glycerol addition of 12.11%, catalyst loading of 0.76%, and blowing agent addition of 1.31% in relation to the total mass of polyols. The BPU foam prepared at the optimal conditions exhibits good thermal conductivity (0.045 Wm−1K−1) and thermal stability, comparable to those of a reference foam prepared with 100% PPG400.

Grace;Abstract The influence of the solid-phase wall boundary condition was investigated in Eulerian–Eulerian numerical simulations of a bubbling fluidized bed. Parametric studies of the particle–wall restitution coefficient and specularity coefficient were performed to evaluate their impact on the predicted flow hydrodynamics in terms of bed expansion, local voidage, and solid velocity. Both two- and three-dimensional simulations were conducted and compared with available experimental data on solid velocity and bubble properties. It is found that the wall effect plays an important role in CFD models. Such factors as the voidage at the bubble boundary, averaging method, and minimum bubble size also influence the mean bubble diameter.

Bessoudo; Andreas K. Athienitis; This paper presents an experimental study of indoor thermal environment near a full-scale glass facade with different types of shading devices under varying climatic conditions in winter. Interior glazing and shading temperature, operative temperature and radiant temperature asymmetry were measured for facade sections with roller shades and venetian blinds at different positions. Interior glass surface temperatures can be high during sunny days with low outdoor temperature. Shading systems significantly improved operative temperature and radiant temperature asymmetry during cold sunny days, depending on their properties and tilt angle. During cloudy days the impact was smaller, however the shading layers could still decrease the amount of heat loss through the facade. A transient building thermal model, which also calculates indoor environmental indices under the presence of solar radiation, was developed and compared with the experimental measurements. Part II of this paper uses this validated model with a transient, two-node thermal comfort model (including transmitted solar radiation) for assessment of indoor environmental conditions with different building envelope and shading properties, facade location and orientation.

For further information contact us at helpdesk@openaire.eudescription Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Article , Journal 1995Publisher:Elsevier BV Authors: Richard J. Parker; Peter L. Simpson; Thomas Gentzis;Abstract Residues from the liquefaction of Black Thunder subbituminous and Illinois No. 6 bituminous coals in an autoclave and a bench unit were examined petrographically. Optical microscopy proved valuable for ranking the samples on the basis of overall coal conversion and presence of vitroplast, granular residue and inertinite. It was observed that in the autoclave that runs on Black Thunder coal, K 2 CO 3 was a superior water gas shift reaction catalyst to NaAlO 2 , or a combination of CS 2 and Fe or Mo catalysts. The amount of vitroplast showing vacuoles and cenospheric morphology in the residues was inversely related to the CO conversion, indicating that the mechanism of vitroplast dissolution is linked to the availability of active CO intermediates (e.g. formate ion, HCOO − ). A CO-steam mixture was more effective than syngas or pure H 2 and N 2 in increasing Black Thunder coal conversion, and resulted in greater morphological changes to the coal particles. In contrast, for Illinois No. 6 coal pure H 2 had a greater effect on coal solubilization and overall conversion than pure CO at the same temperature; this was attributed to the absence of carboxylates to react with the formate ions. Higher mesophase and coke contents were detected in some bench unit runs on Black Thunder coal that were operated in counterflow mode. Higher severity, poorer mixing, longer residence time and a reduction in pressure by almost 3.5 MPa are believed to be responsible for the retrogressive reactions forming mesospheres in these cases.
