The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Superfund—the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA) database—has collected and built an open-source database based on nearly 2000 US soil remediation cases since 1980, providing detailed information and references for researchers worldwide to carry out remediation work. However, the cases were relatively independent to each other, so the whole database lacks systematicness and instructiveness to some extent. In this study, the basic features of all 144 soil remediation projects in four major oil-producing states (California, Texas, Oklahoma and Alaska) were extracted from the CERCLA database and the correlations among the pollutant species, pollutant site characteristics and selection of remediation methods were analyzed using traditional and machine learning techniques. The Decision Tree Classifier was selected as the machine learning model. The results showed that the growth of new contaminated sites has slowed down in recent years; physical remediation was the most commonly used method, and the probability of its application is more than 80%. The presence of benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylene (BTEX) substances and the geographical location of the site were the two most influential factors in the choice of remediation method for a specific site; the maximum weights of these two features reaches 0.304 and 0.288.

The electromagnetic vibration caused by electromagnetic force on the stator has threatened large hydro generators operating safely and stably. At the Zhexi hydropower station, the hydro generator was beset by electromagnetic vibration for a long time. Therefore, the paper provided a new method to help to find the vibration source and detect the hydro generator fault, through the combination of simulation and experiments. In this paper, the 3D stator pack structure model and the 2D hydro generator electromagnetic models under rotor eccentricity and rotor ellipse deformation conditions were built. Then, electromagnetism simulations were conducted to study the characteristics of the electromagnetic flux and electromagnetic force under different conditions by using the finite element method (FEM). Lastly, the vibration testing experiments and harmonic response simulations of stator frame were performed to present the characteristics of vibration distribution in frequency conditions. The simulation results were compared with the generator measured data to try to find out the main vibration source and guide the overhaul.

In order to evaluate the displacement effect of four kinds of injection media in tight oil sandstone, water, active water, CO2, N2 flooding experiments were carried out in laboratory. Online Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectrometers combine the advantages of NMR technology and core displacement experiments. In the displacement experiment, NMR data of different injection volumes were obtained and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was carried out. The results showed that micro and sub-micropores provided 62–97% of the produced crude oil. The enhanced oil recovery ratio of active water flooding was higher than that of conventional water flooding up to 10%. The recovery ratio of gas flooding in micro and sub-micropores was 60–70% higher than that of water flooding. The recovery ratio of CO2 flooding was 10% higher than that of N2 flooding. The remaining oil was mainly distributed in pores larger than 0.1 μm. Under the same permeability level, the remaining oil saturation of cores after gas flooding was 10–25% lower than water flooding. From MRI images, the displacement effects from good to bad were as follows: CO2 flooding, N2 flooding, active water flooding, and conventional water flooding.

As an important infrastructure project, the concrete gravity dam plays an extremely important role in hydropower generation, irrigation, flood control, and other aspects. Seepage is an important factor affecting the stability of concrete gravity dams. Seepage safety assessment is of great significance to the safe operation of the dams. However, the existing seepage safety assessment models are not dynamic, and the correlation among indicators is often neglected and the overall seepage safety of the concrete gravity dams has not been considered. To solve these problems, this research proposes a dynamic matter-element extension (D-MEE) model. First, the D-MEE model is established through adroit integration of the matter-element extension (MEE) model and functional data analysis (FDA). Second, a dynamic criteria importance through the intercriteria correlation (D-CRITIC) method that can effectively consider the correlation among indicators is proposed to determine the weights. Third, the influence of different dam blocks on the overall seepage safety status is considered by constructing a spatial weight matrix. Finally, the proposed method is applied to the concrete gravity dam X in southwest China. The results show that the proposed method is effective and superior to the existing evaluation methods of seepage safety.

The focus is on conventional chemicals currently in use for abattoir wastewater treatment and energy related aspects. In addition, this article discusses the use of cleaning and sanitizing agents at the meat processing facilities and their effect on decision making in regard to selecting the treatment methods. This study shows that cleaning chemicals are currently used at a concentration of 2% to 3% which will further be diluted with the bulk wastewater. For example, for an abattoir that produces 3500 m3/day wastewater and uses around 200 L (3%) acid and alkaline chemicals, the final concentration of these chemical will be around 0.00017%. For this reason, the effects of these chemicals on the treatment method and the environment are very limited. Chemical treatment is highly efficient in removing soluble and colloidal particles from the red meat processing industry wastewater. Actually, it is shown that, if chemical treatment has been applied, then biological treatment can only be included for the treatment of the solid waste by-product and/or for production of bioenergy. Chemical treatment is recommended in all cases and especially when the wastewater is required to be reused or released to water streams. This study also shows that energy consumption for chemical treatment units is insignificant while efficient compared to other physical or biological units. A combination of a main (ferric chloride) and an aid coagulant has shown to be efficient and cost-effective in treating abattoir wastewater. The cost of using this combination per cubic meter wastewater treated is 0.055 USD/m3 compared to 0.11 USD/m3 for alum and the amount of sludge produced is 77% less than that produced by alum. In addition, the residues of these chemicals in the wastewater and the sludge have a positive or no impact on biological processes. Energy consumption from a small wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) installed to recycle wastewater for a meet facility can be around $500,000.

A 1000 Nm3/h capacity pilot scale dual baghouse filter system was tested on flue gas and fly ash from a municipal solid waste incinerator, and the removal efficiency of dioxins, heavy metals and HCl was studied. Activated carbon was injected at the inlet of the first baghouse filter to remove the gas phase dioxins and heavy metals, and baking soda was injected at the inlet of the second baghouse filter to remove HCl. Concentrations of dioxins at the outlet of the first and second baghouse were 0.034 and 0.011 ng TEQ/Nm3, respectively, which were both far below the national emission standard. The particulate matter concentration was 0.85 mg/m3, and the heavy metals leaching concentration of the fly ash from the second baghouse filter was lower than the hazardous waste identification standard. HCl concentration was almost zero at the outlet of the second baghouse filter when the optimal equivalence ratio of baking soda to HCl was 1.6. In addition, the estimated fly ash yield was 2.35% of the incinerated solid waste for the dual baghouse filter system, which was significantly lower than 3.5% as the traditional semidry scrubber + single baghouse filter.

The RNG k-ε model turbulence model is used to carry out a CFD numerical simulation of the dual-flow channel pumping station. Through the model test, the accuracy of the numerical simulation of the dual-flow channel pump device is verified. Using the harmonic response analysis method, the water pressure fluctuating load calculated under different startup conditions under the design water level is applied to the pumping station. In this way, the dynamic response law of the pump station structure under the action of water pressure pulsation is studied. The calculation results show that the values of pressure pulsation in the drainage condition and the water diversion condition are relatively close, and the main difference is the difference in the water levels of the inlet and outlet water. Under different working conditions, the amplitude of the pumping station building basically shows the characteristics that the vertical amplitude is greater than the horizontal amplitude. The maximum dynamic displacement under drainage condition is greater than that under the diversion condition, and the maximum dynamic displacement appears at the control gate. Under the three working conditions, the maximum dynamic stress of each characteristic part of the pumping station building is low. The maximum total dynamic stress under the drainage condition is greater than that under the diversion condition.

Heavy oil reservoirs are often characterized by high viscosity and poor mobility, which is more complex with the presence of bottom water. The conventional vertical well development method has low oil recovery efficiency and limited controlled reserves of a single well. In addition, water cut can increase dramatically when the edge-bottom water breaks through. Horizontal well and CO2 huff-n-puff is an effective alternative development model for heavy oil reservoirs. This development method makes efficient use of CO2 and accords with the “Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS)”. The horizontal well can increase the drainage area. The dissolution of CO2 improves the mobility of crude oil and increases formation energy. In this paper, we established numerical simulation models based on the Liuguanzhuang oilfield in Dagang. The characteristics and producing rules of the horizontal well and CO2 huff-n-puff development in the heavy oil reservoir were studied. The results show that the production characteristics of horizontal well and CO2 huff-n-puff were similar to Steam-Assisted Gravity Drainage (SAGD). CO2 forms a viscosity reduction area above the horizontal well and the heavy oil flows into the wellbore due to gravity after viscosity reduction. The CO2 huff-n-puff can effectively enhance the production area of horizontal wells compared with the depletion development. However, the improvement in the production area gradually decreased as CO2 huff-n-puff cycles continued. There was a boundary of production area against the horizontal well, with the main production of heavy oil occurring at the upper and either end of the horizontal well. The CO2 huff-n-puff has a restraining effect on the edge-bottom water, which is confirmed via the proposed theoretical model.

Mining coal, oil and other energy will form much slope engineering, such as open-pit mine slope and oil depot slope. The groundwater seepage seriously affects the stability of these slope engineering projects. Drainage pipes are commonly used in slope engineering projects to reduce the risk of moisture decreasing soil stability. Such pipes are prone to blockage by soil accumulation after a period of operation, resulting in decreased drainage or complete failure. By installing fibre bundles in drainage pipes, drainage can be maintained under soil ingress. This paper conducted particle flow simulations of the influences of soil particles on the clogging of geotextile filters and drainage pipes under various influences and estimated their seepage rates. Higher water pressure, smaller flower hole intervals in the pipe, greater soil friction angles and smaller pipe inclination angles are less conducive to drainage. Under silting conditions, the seepage and drainage performance of a drainage pipe can be improved by installing a fibre bundle. Five types of fibre bundles were tested with plastic rope providing the best drainage effect. With plastic rope and cotton rope, the best drainage is achieved using uneven arrangements of fibre bundles. In contrast, nylon rope, hemp rope and polyester rope perform best when uniformly arranged. The greater the number of fibre bundles per unit cross-sectional area of pipe, the better the seepage conductivity. Seepage is also greater when the soil in the pipe has a higher sand content. These results provide a reference for the design and construction of more reliable drainage systems for slope engineering in wet areas.

Anode modification is a useful method to increase the performance of microbial fuel cells (MFCs). By using the electrochemical deposition method, Fe3O4 and polypyrrole (PPy) were polymerized on a carbon felt anode to prepare Fe3O4-PPy composite modified anodes. In order to ascertain the effect of electrodeposition time on characteristics of the modified electrode, the preparation time of the modified electrode was adjusted. The modified anodes were used in MFCs, and their performances were evaluated by analyzing the electricity generation performance and sewage treatment capacity of MFCs. Experimental results indicated that the Fe3O4-PPy composite modified anodes could enhance the power production capacity and sewage treatment efficiency of MFC effectively. In particular, when the deposition time was 50 min, the modified anode could significantly improve the MFC performance. In this case, the steady-state current density of MFC increased by 59.5% in comparison with that of the MFC with an unmodified carbon felt anode, and the chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal rate was 95.3% higher than that of the unmodified anode. Therefore, the Fe3O4-PPy composite is an effective material for electrode modification, and a good anode modification effect can be obtained by selecting the appropriate electrodeposition time.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Superfund—the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA) database—has collected and built an open-source database based on nearly 2000 US soil remediation cases since 1980, providing detailed information and references for researchers worldwide to carry out remediation work. However, the cases were relatively independent to each other, so the whole database lacks systematicness and instructiveness to some extent. In this study, the basic features of all 144 soil remediation projects in four major oil-producing states (California, Texas, Oklahoma and Alaska) were extracted from the CERCLA database and the correlations among the pollutant species, pollutant site characteristics and selection of remediation methods were analyzed using traditional and machine learning techniques. The Decision Tree Classifier was selected as the machine learning model. The results showed that the growth of new contaminated sites has slowed down in recent years; physical remediation was the most commonly used method, and the probability of its application is more than 80%. The presence of benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylene (BTEX) substances and the geographical location of the site were the two most influential factors in the choice of remediation method for a specific site; the maximum weights of these two features reaches 0.304 and 0.288.

The electromagnetic vibration caused by electromagnetic force on the stator has threatened large hydro generators operating safely and stably. At the Zhexi hydropower station, the hydro generator was beset by electromagnetic vibration for a long time. Therefore, the paper provided a new method to help to find the vibration source and detect the hydro generator fault, through the combination of simulation and experiments. In this paper, the 3D stator pack structure model and the 2D hydro generator electromagnetic models under rotor eccentricity and rotor ellipse deformation conditions were built. Then, electromagnetism simulations were conducted to study the characteristics of the electromagnetic flux and electromagnetic force under different conditions by using the finite element method (FEM). Lastly, the vibration testing experiments and harmonic response simulations of stator frame were performed to present the characteristics of vibration distribution in frequency conditions. The simulation results were compared with the generator measured data to try to find out the main vibration source and guide the overhaul.

In order to evaluate the displacement effect of four kinds of injection media in tight oil sandstone, water, active water, CO2, N2 flooding experiments were carried out in laboratory. Online Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectrometers combine the advantages of NMR technology and core displacement experiments. In the displacement experiment, NMR data of different injection volumes were obtained and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was carried out. The results showed that micro and sub-micropores provided 62–97% of the produced crude oil. The enhanced oil recovery ratio of active water flooding was higher than that of conventional water flooding up to 10%. The recovery ratio of gas flooding in micro and sub-micropores was 60–70% higher than that of water flooding. The recovery ratio of CO2 flooding was 10% higher than that of N2 flooding. The remaining oil was mainly distributed in pores larger than 0.1 μm. Under the same permeability level, the remaining oil saturation of cores after gas flooding was 10–25% lower than water flooding. From MRI images, the displacement effects from good to bad were as follows: CO2 flooding, N2 flooding, active water flooding, and conventional water flooding.

As an important infrastructure project, the concrete gravity dam plays an extremely important role in hydropower generation, irrigation, flood control, and other aspects. Seepage is an important factor affecting the stability of concrete gravity dams. Seepage safety assessment is of great significance to the safe operation of the dams. However, the existing seepage safety assessment models are not dynamic, and the correlation among indicators is often neglected and the overall seepage safety of the concrete gravity dams has not been considered. To solve these problems, this research proposes a dynamic matter-element extension (D-MEE) model. First, the D-MEE model is established through adroit integration of the matter-element extension (MEE) model and functional data analysis (FDA). Second, a dynamic criteria importance through the intercriteria correlation (D-CRITIC) method that can effectively consider the correlation among indicators is proposed to determine the weights. Third, the influence of different dam blocks on the overall seepage safety status is considered by constructing a spatial weight matrix. Finally, the proposed method is applied to the concrete gravity dam X in southwest China. The results show that the proposed method is effective and superior to the existing evaluation methods of seepage safety.

This review article addresses wastewater treatment methods in the red meat processing industry. The focus is on conventional chemicals currently in use for abattoir wastewater treatment and energy related aspects. In addition, this article discusses the use of cleaning and sanitizing agents at the meat processing facilities and their effect on decision making in regard to selecting the treatment methods. This study shows that cleaning chemicals are currently used at a concentration of 2% to 3% which will further be diluted with the bulk wastewater. For example, for an abattoir that produces 3500 m3/day wastewater and uses around 200 L (3%) acid and alkaline chemicals, the final concentration of these chemical will be around 0.00017%. For this reason, the effects of these chemicals on the treatment method and the environment are very limited. Chemical treatment is highly efficient in removing soluble and colloidal particles from the red meat processing industry wastewater. Actually, it is shown that, if chemical treatment has been applied, then biological treatment can only be included for the treatment of the solid waste by-product and/or for production of bioenergy. Chemical treatment is recommended in all cases and especially when the wastewater is required to be reused or released to water streams. This study also shows that energy consumption for chemical treatment units is insignificant while efficient compared to other physical or biological units. A combination of a main (ferric chloride) and an aid coagulant has shown to be efficient and cost-effective in treating abattoir wastewater. The cost of using this combination per cubic meter wastewater treated is 0.055 USD/m3 compared to 0.11 USD/m3 for alum and the amount of sludge produced is 77% less than that produced by alum. In addition, the residues of these chemicals in the wastewater and the sludge have a positive or no impact on biological processes. Energy consumption from a small wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) installed to recycle wastewater for a meet facility can be around $500,000.

A 1000 Nm3/h capacity pilot scale dual baghouse filter system was tested on flue gas and fly ash from a municipal solid waste incinerator, and the removal efficiency of dioxins, heavy metals and HCl was studied. Activated carbon was injected at the inlet of the first baghouse filter to remove the gas phase dioxins and heavy metals, and baking soda was injected at the inlet of the second baghouse filter to remove HCl. Concentrations of dioxins at the outlet of the first and second baghouse were 0.034 and 0.011 ng TEQ/Nm3, respectively, which were both far below the national emission standard. The particulate matter concentration was 0.85 mg/m3, and the heavy metals leaching concentration of the fly ash from the second baghouse filter was lower than the hazardous waste identification standard. HCl concentration was almost zero at the outlet of the second baghouse filter when the optimal equivalence ratio of baking soda to HCl was 1.6. In addition, the estimated fly ash yield was 2.35% of the incinerated solid waste for the dual baghouse filter system, which was significantly lower than 3.5% as the traditional semidry scrubber + single baghouse filter.

The particulate matter concentration was 0.85 mg/m3, and the heavy metals leaching concentration of the fly ash from the second baghouse filter was lower than the hazardous waste identification standard. HCl concentration was almost zero at the outlet of the second baghouse filter when the optimal equivalence ratio of baking soda to HCl was 1.6. In addition, the estimated fly ash yield was 2.35% of the incinerated solid waste for the dual baghouse filter system, which was significantly lower than 3.5% as the traditional semidry scrubber + single baghouse filter.

Heavy oil reservoirs are often characterized by high viscosity and poor mobility, which is more complex with the presence of bottom water. The conventional vertical well development method has low oil recovery efficiency and limited controlled reserves of a single well. In addition, water cut can increase dramatically when the edge-bottom water breaks through. Horizontal well and CO2 huff-n-puff is an effective alternative development model for heavy oil reservoirs. This development method makes efficient use of CO2 and accords with the “Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS)”. The horizontal well can increase the drainage area. The dissolution of CO2 improves the mobility of crude oil and increases formation energy. In this paper, we established numerical simulation models based on the Liuguanzhuang oilfield in Dagang. The characteristics and producing rules of the horizontal well and CO2 huff-n-puff development in the heavy oil reservoir were studied. The results show that the production characteristics of horizontal well and CO2 huff-n-puff were similar to Steam-Assisted Gravity Drainage (SAGD). CO2 forms a viscosity reduction area above the horizontal well and the heavy oil flows into the wellbore due to gravity after viscosity reduction. The CO2 huff-n-puff can effectively enhance the production area of horizontal wells compared with the depletion development. However, the improvement in the production area gradually decreased as CO2 huff-n-puff cycles continued. There was a boundary of production area against the horizontal well, with the main production of heavy oil occurring at the upper and either end of the horizontal well. The CO2 huff-n-puff has a restraining effect on the edge-bottom water, which is confirmed via the proposed theoretical model.

Mining coal, oil and other energy will form much slope engineering, such as open-pit mine slope and oil depot slope. The groundwater seepage seriously affects the stability of these slope engineering projects. Drainage pipes are commonly used in slope engineering projects to reduce the risk of moisture decreasing soil stability. Such pipes are prone to blockage by soil accumulation after a period of operation, resulting in decreased drainage or complete failure. By installing fibre bundles in drainage pipes, drainage can be maintained under soil ingress. This paper conducted particle flow simulations of the influences of soil particles on the clogging of geotextile filters and drainage pipes under various influences and estimated their seepage rates. Higher water pressure, smaller flower hole intervals in the pipe, greater soil friction angles and smaller pipe inclination angles are less conducive to drainage. Under silting conditions, the seepage and drainage performance of a drainage pipe can be improved by installing a fibre bundle. Five types of fibre bundles were tested with plastic rope providing the best drainage effect. With plastic rope and cotton rope, the best drainage is achieved using uneven arrangements of fibre bundles. In contrast, nylon rope, hemp rope and polyester rope perform best when uniformly arranged. The greater the number of fibre bundles per unit cross-sectional area of pipe, the better the seepage conductivity. Seepage is also greater when the soil in the pipe has a higher sand content. These results provide a reference for the design and construction of more reliable drainage systems for slope engineering in wet areas.

Anode modification is a useful method to increase the performance of microbial fuel cells (MFCs). By using the electrochemical deposition method, Fe3O4 and polypyrrole (PPy) were polymerized on a carbon felt anode to prepare Fe3O4-PPy composite modified anodes. In order to ascertain the effect of electrodeposition time on characteristics of the modified electrode, the preparation time of the modified electrode was adjusted. The modified anodes were used in MFCs, and their performances were evaluated by analyzing the electricity generation performance and sewage treatment capacity of MFCs. Experimental results indicated that the Fe3O4-PPy composite modified anodes could enhance the power production capacity and sewage treatment efficiency of MFC effectively. In particular, when the deposition time was 50 min, the modified anode could significantly improve the MFC performance. In this case, the steady-state current density of MFC increased by 59.5% in comparison with that of the MFC with an unmodified carbon felt anode, and the chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal rate was 95.3% higher than that of the unmodified anode. Therefore, the Fe3O4-PPy composite is an effective material for electrode modification, and a good anode modification effect can be obtained by selecting the appropriate electrodeposition time.

Anode modification is a useful method to increase the performance of microbial fuel cells (MFCs). By using the electrochemical deposition method, Fe3O4 and polypyrrole (PPy) were polymerized on a carbon felt anode to prepare Fe3O4-PPy composite modified anodes. In order to ascertain the effect of electrodeposition time on characteristics of the modified electrode, the preparation time of the modified electrode was adjusted. The modified anodes were used in MFCs, and their performances were evaluated by analyzing the electricity generation performance and sewage treatment capacity of MFCs. Experimental results indicated that the Fe3O4-PPy composite modified anodes could enhance the power production capacity and sewage treatment efficiency of MFC effectively. In particular, when the deposition time was 50 min, the modified anode could significantly improve the MFC performance. In this case, the steady-state current density of MFC increased by 59.5% in comparison with that of the MFC with an unmodified carbon felt anode, and the chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal rate was 95.3% higher than that of the unmodified anode. Therefore, the Fe3O4-PPy composite is an effective material for electrode modification, and a good anode modification effect can be obtained by selecting the appropriate electrodeposition time.
