Abstract Transient thermal behaviors of ultra-supercritical steam turbine control valves during the cold start warm-up process of steam turbine systems were comprehensively studied using conjugate heat transfer (CHT) simulation. The geometrical configurations and boundary conditions used in simulation were identical to the field setup in a thermal power plant. The simulated temperature variations were first validated using measurements by the flush-mounted thermocouples inside the solid valve bodies. The CHT simulation implementing the shear stress transport (SST) turbulence model demonstrated good agreement with the field data, and the overall numerical errors were below 10%; however, the numerical errors of the simulation, which used empirical heat transfer coefficients at the fluid–solid interfaces, reached 40%. The determined temperature differences between the cold valve bodies with the hot steam flow decreased significantly. Specifically, the temperature differences along the inner wall surfaces of the valve bodies decreased to less than 50 °C. Further investigation of the transient heat flux distributions and Nusselt number distributions confirmed that the unsteady flow behaviors, such as the alternating oscillations of the annular wall-attached jet, the central reverse flow and the intermediate shear layer instabilities, enhanced the fluid–solid heat convection process and thus contributed to the warming up of the solid valve bodies.

Microwave-assisted alkali pre-treatment of wheat straw and its enzymatic hydrolysis were investigated and compared with the conventional alkali pre-treatment process. First, the effect of microwave power and pre-treatment time on the weight loss and composition of wheat straw was examined. The results show that the higher microwave power with shorter pre-treatment time and the lower microwave power with longer pre-treatment time had the same effect on the weight loss and composition at the same energy consumption. The comparison was then made between the effect of the microwave-assisted alkali pre-treatment and the conventional alkali one on the weight loss and composition of wheat straw. The wheat straw had a weight loss of 48·4% and a composition of cellulose 79·6%, lignin 5·7% and hemicellulose 7·8% after 25 min microwave-assisted alkali pre-treatment at 700 W, compared with a weight loss of 44·7% and a composition of cellulose 73·5%, lignin 7·2% and hemicellulose 11·2% after 60 min conventional alkali pre-treatment. The microwave-assisted alkali pre-treatment removed more lignin and hemicellulose from wheat straw with shorter pre-treatment time compared with the conventional alkali one. Finally, the enzymatic hydrolysis of pre-treated wheat straw (substrate concentration 50 g l−1, enzyme loading 20 mg g−1 substrate) was also investigated and the results indicate that the microwave-assisted alkali pre-treated wheat straw had higher hydrolysis rate, reducing sugar concentration and glucose content in the hydrolysate than the conventional alkali pre-treated one. Microwave-assisted alkali pre-treatment is a potential alternative of wheat straw pre-treatment for its enzymatic hydrolysis.

Interest in the highly efficient energy hub (EH) model has been growing despite the high computational requirements of planning for a multi-energy, multi-device operation. To address both the device size limitation and the multi-scenario issue, we propose a new solution methodology for solving the EH planning problem. In the method, the decision variables are device sizes. First, a dimension reduction technique is proposed to address the curse of dimensionality based on the correlation of unknown variables such as the capacities of different devices in an EH. Second, to avoid local convergence, a solution method called the variable-sized unimodal searching (VUS) approach is proposed to assure a global optimal planning scheme for the one-dimensional non-convex optimization model obtained from the preceding dimension reduction process. The case study indicates that the proposed approach has a higher computing efficiency than the Benders decomposition (BD) algorithm to deal with a scenario-based stochastic planning problem with a large number of scenarios. Thus, the effectiveness of the EH planning approach is verified.

Abstract This study sought to quantify and characterize cassava waste as fuel. The wastes from three cultivars were collected to study and were divided into three distinct parts of the cassava plant: seed stem, thick stalks, and thin stalks. Physical and chemical analyzes were carried out to determine the elemental composition of the waste: volatile matter; fixed carbon; ash; moisture; lignin; cellulose; hemicellulose; ash composition and higher heating value were determined. We conducted a thermogravimetric analysis in oxidizing and inert atmospheres to study the behavior of the waste as fuel. The root productivity obtained ranged from 7.7 to 13.0 t ha−1 yr−1 on a dry basis (db), and the ratio between waste and roots varied from 0.36 to 0.91. The physical and chemical properties of cassava waste are analogous to those of woody biomass regarding the elemental composition, the higher heating value, and thermogravimetric analysis. Ash content varied from 2.5% to 3.5%, reaching around 6.0% in samples unwashed. Approximately 60% of the ashes are alkali oxides, especially P2O5, K2O, and CaO, which have low melting points. The alkali index calculated suggests that there is a strong tendency that the combustion process leads to ash fouling and the formation of ash deposits.

A serious problem faced by the metal mineral mining industry is the challenge to the sustainable development of resource mining due to the continuous decline of ore geological grade. In the case of producing concentrates of the same quality, compared with using only high-grade raw ore, ore blending is a way to slow down the decline of ore geological grade by combining high- and low-grade raw ore. There are many ore blending models considering cost minimization or profit maximization as the target value, ignoring the fact that ore blending is intended to obtain a homogenized product. Moreover, the ore blending model cannot be solved by traditional operational research methods when blended grade stability of multiple elements is considered in the ore blending program. In this paper, a multi-objective ore blending optimization model is constructed for the comprehensive utilization of associated resources in ores. It minimizes the deviation of the grade of each metallic element in the blended associated ore from the beneficiation grade and the percentage of different types of rocks at the unloading point. To solve this multi-objective optimization model, an intelligent optimization method is proposed that is an improved multi-objective optimization algorithm based on the Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm III (NSGA-III). The case study shows that the proposed model and algorithm can effectively solve the mixing problem of polymetallic ores and obtain a satisfactory ore blending solution.

AbstractTo estimate the life cycle cost of thermal power equipments in engineering, this paper established a comprehensive evaluation model of life cycle cost with the life cycle breakdown and cost breakdown structure. Based on the model, this paper defined the cost elements of the thermal power equipment, analyzed influences of the thermal power equipment. Finally, the model is applied to an instance to estimate various cost categories in each life phase, which were summed up to the life cycle cost of the thermal power equipment.

To determine the potential for improving biomass enzymolysis, a combined oxidization and liquid ammonia pretreatment (OD-LAT) was employed for bamboo. The effects of oxidant, bamboo ages, and species on the pretreatment effectiveness and subsequent enzymolysis were studied. Under the optimal OD-LAT pretreatment and enzymolysis of the B-NA bamboo Neosinocalamus affinis, the glucan and xylan conversion reached 83.85% and 78.66%, respectively, and approximately 59.7-68.5 g of fermentable sugars can be produced per 100 g of dry bamboo, which was an approximately 5-8 fold increase compared with untreated sample. The H2O2 loading of 1.0 was the optimal oxidant dosage for the OD-LAT process. The OD-LAT pretreatment was only suitable for bamboo under three-year-old, and it significantly improved the enzymolysis of B-NA and B-BM, while it was limited to B-DO and B-PP. The pretreatment effects of bamboo were not only related to composition but also to the bamboo age, species, macro-structures and micro-structures.
