The paper describes formation and spreading of dense shelf waters in the Adriatic Sea (North Adriatic Dense Water, NAdDW) during the winter of 2012 as a consequence of an intense and long cold air outbreak of northeasterly Bora winds. As a result, during February 2012 northern Adriatic Sea water temperature dropped to about 6 degrees C and density exceeded 1030 kg/m(3), most likely the maximum value since 1929. NAdDW dynamics has been investigated by means of a 3-D ocean-wave coupled model running on a high resolution and eddy-permitting grid. The numerical experiments have relied on the Coupled-Ocean-Atmosphere-Wave-Sediment-Transport (COAWST) system forced one-way with atmospheric forcings provided by the model COSMO-17. A suite of observational data has been used to characterize the Bora event and evaluate numerical model performance. At sub-basin scales, the newly formed waters flowing southerly have produced a water renewal of the northern Adriatic, as more than 50% of water volumes have left the basin. Dense waters volume transports, evaluated through different Adriatic cross-sections, have been modulated by tides (damped for the densest water masses) and reached about 1 Sv. The contribution of wave-induced forcings has been quantified and examined, indicating that these represent a major driving mechanism during NAdDW production and spreading phases. This work provides evidence that NAdDW is spread accordingly with two different mechanisms: at early stages of its formation, the wind-driven ocean circulation pushes newly formed waters to leave the northern basin with relatively high speeds (about 0.30 m/s). Later on, remaining NAdDW leaks slowly out (0.09 m/s as average) from the production site. Residence times of dense waters in the north, middle, and south Adriatic Sea are also documented. FAGNANO, MASSIMO in OpenAIREBioenergy crops are well known for their ability to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and increase the soil carbon stock. Although such crops are often held to be in competition with food crops and thus raise the question of current and future food security, at the same time mitigation measures are required to tackle climate change and sustain local farming communities and crop production. However, in some cases the actions envisaged for specific pedo-climatic conditions are not always economically sustainable by farmers. In this frame, energy crops with high environmental adaptability and yields, such as giant reed (Arundo donax L.), may represent an opportunity to improve farm incomes, making marginal areas not suitable for food production once again productive. In so doing, three of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations would be met, namely SDG 2 on food security and sustainable agriculture, SDG 7 on reliable, sustainable and modern energy, and SDG 13 on action to combat climate change and its impacts. In this work, the response of giant reed in the marginal areas of an agricultural district of southern Italy (Destra Sele) and expected farm incomes under climate change (2021-2050) are evaluated. The normalized water productivity index of giant reed was determined (WP; 30.1gm-2) by means of a SWAP agro-hydrological model, calibrated and validated on two years of a long-term field experiment. The model was used to estimate giant reed response (biomass yield) in marginal areas under climate change, and economic evaluation was performed to determine expected farm incomes (woodchips and chopped forage). The results show that woodchip production represents the most profitable option for farmers, yielding a gross margin 50% lower than ordinary high-input maize cultivation across the study area.

Abstract Rising temperature has been associated with increased occurrence of herbivorous insect outbreaks, explained by several direct and indirect mechanisms. Whereas natural enemies are known key drivers of forest‐defoliating insect cycles, indirect effects of temperature on insect's ability to defend against pathogens and parasitoids (e.g., immunocompetence), as well as the interaction with other mechanisms (e.g., diet), remain less explored. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of temperature and diet on the performance and immune response of the model lepidopteran system Ormiscodes amphimone (Saturniidae) and its host plants Nothofagus spp. (Nothofagaceae). Larvae of O. amphimone were reared under two temperature conditions (ambient 18:6°C and warmed, 21:6°C; light: dark, 14:10 h) and on leaves of two of their preferred Nothofagus host plants, which vary in quality (lower N. antarctica–higher N. pumilio). We measured developmental time, female pupal weight as a proxy of fitness, relative growth rate, nutritional indices and melanisation of a monofilament as a proxy of immune response. Results showed that an average rise of 2°C favours larval immunocompetence, potentially decreasing mortality exerted by parasitoids. Moreover, depending on diet, an increase in temperature can either maintain (on more nutritious N. pumilio leaves) or enhance (on less nutritious N. antarctica leaves) larval nutritional efficiency, performance and female pupal weight. Hence, an increase in temperature could enhance O. amphimone population growth, through attenuating differences caused by diet and enhancing immunocompetence, favouring outbreak frequency, severity and area.

Paolo Tarolli in OpenAIREAlpine grasslands on the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau are sensitive and vulnerable to climate change and human activities. Climate warming and overgrazing have already caused degradation in a large fraction of alpine grasslands on this plateau. However, it remains unclear how human activities (mainly livestock grazing) regulates vegetation dynamics under climate change. Here, alpine grassland productivity (substituted with the normalized difference vegetation index, NDVI) is hypothesized to vary in a nonlinear trajectory to follow climate fluctuations and human disturbances. With generalized additive mixed modelling (GAMM) and residual-trend (RESTREND) analysis together, both magnitude and direction of climatic (in terms of temperature, precipitation, and radiation) and anthropogenic impacts on NDVI variation were examined across alpine meadows, steppes, and desert-steppes on the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau. The results revealed that accelerating warming and greening, respectively, took place in 76.2% and 78.8% of alpine grasslands on the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau. The relative importance of temperature, precipitation, and radiation impacts was comparable, between 20.4% and 24.8%, and combined to explain 66.2% of NDVI variance at the pixel scale. The human influence was strengthening and weakening, respectively, in 15.5% and 14.3% of grassland pixels, being slightly larger than any sole climatic variable across the entire plateau. Anthropogenic and climatic factors can be in opposite ways to affect alpine grasslands, even within the same grassland type, likely regulated by plant community assembly and species functional traits. Therefore, the underlying mechanisms of how plant functional diversity regulates nonlinear ecosystem response to climatic and anthropogenic stresses should be carefully explored in the future.

A water-soluble organic redox couple (TT−/DTT) and new organic dyes (D45 and D51) have been developed for aqueous dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs). An optimal efficiency of 3.5% was obtained using the D51 dye and an optimized electrolyte composition. The highest IPCE value obtained was 68% at 460 nm.

The search for affordable high performance electrode materials in photoelectrochemical hydrogen production by solar water splitting is an ongoing quest. Hematite is a photoanode material with an electronic band gap suitable for efficient absorption of visible light in a photoelectrochemical cell (PEC). Although its poor electronic structure makes hematite a controversial candidate for PEC, it remains promising because it is an earth abundant, chemically stable and low cost material – necessary prerequisites for PEC to become a competitive cost-efficient solar fuel economy. In addition to reviewing some recent PEC research on hematite and its relevant physical and chemical characteristics, we show how hematite obtained by a low cost synthesis can be refined by hydrothermal treatment and further functionalized by coating with phycocyanin, a light harvesting protein known for photosynthesis in blue-green algae.

Abstract The environmental impacts of brine disposal from seawater desalination plants and wastewater treatment plants represent a subject of growing concern; thus, determining the potential applicability of zero liquid discharge (ZLD) for water treatment is crucial. Membrane-based technologies are a potentially attractive strategy that can be used to reach this goal. Recent studies have highlighted that integrating a series of membrane processes is a viable approach to achieving ZLD for industrial use. However, a relatively limited number of reports have been published on the challenging problems encountered with ZLD approaches. Here, we provide a review of membrane processes that may be used in ZLD approaches and describe their problems as well as potential solutions and innovative technologies for improving their performance. Furthermore, the energy consumption of the different approaches is calculated and analyzed because it represents a major contributor to the total cost, and investments in innovative technologies are discussed. Finally, the prospects for membrane-based ZLD and further research are highlighted.

Li Wang; Abstract Vegetation is usually sparse in the desert regions, but it plays important roles in stabilizing sand dunes and combating desertification. Establishing how desert vegetation responds to changes in both natural forcing and anthropogenic interference is essential for better understanding desertification processes and their future dynamics. In this study, a comprehensive analysis of NDVI time series data in combination with climate reanalysis data and topographic data was conducted to investigate the possible effects of different external factors on desert vegetation in the Tengger desert, one of the largest deserts in northern China. The results show that vegetation is mostly distributed near the desert margins and in the interdune areas with relatively low and flat topography. Multiple NDVI datasets indicate a consistently greening trend over the entire desert during the last forty years, and the greening rates are higher at sites with sand fixation and vegetation restoration practices. After a few decades of restoration practices, vegetation greenness in these sites is approaching their natural states, but they still show large interannual variability associated with precipitation fluctuations. Therefore, the greening trend of the entire desert could be related to recent climate change towards wetter, warmer and less windy conditions, while human efforts have accelerated the rate of vegetation recovery in the restoration sites. Our study implies that the present climate change has produced conditions favorable for continued vegetation increase in the drylands of northern China, and this trend has been facilitated by policy-driven restoration projects. The combined effects of climate change, topography and human interference on desert vegetation should be considered in future restoration practices.

Biodegradation rates of benzoate and related aromatic compounds, 3-nitrobenzoate, 4-chlorobenzoate, 4-chlorophenol, and 2,4-dichlorophenol by unexposed (unacclimated) and long-term exposed (acclimated) biomass were quantified using a modified fed-batch technique. The acclimated biomass was taken after approximately 1-year of operation from three lab-scale sequencing batch reactors (SBR). These reactors were operated under various cycling electron acceptor conditions with a continuous feed of a synthetic wastewater containing biogenic and nonbiogenic chemicals including benzoate, 3-nitrobenzoate, and 4-chlorophenol, but not 4-chlorobenzoate or 2,4-dichlorophenol. The unexposed biomass was taken from a full-scale wastewater treatment plant, which constituted one of the original sources of inoculum for the lab-scale SBRs. The acclimated biomass manifested high removal rates of benzoate and related aromatic compounds with additional removal of structurally similar chemicals (4-chlorobenzoate and 2,4-dichlorophenol). The unacclimated biomass showed no removal of 3-nitrobenzoate, 4-chlorobenzoate or 2,4-dichlorophenol. Addition of biogenic substrates reduced the degradation of most aromatic compounds tested, but it enhanced 2,4-dichlorophenol removal. Biodegradation rates of each aromatic compound with the biomass from the anoxic/aerobic SBR were further determined under anaerobic (absence of aeration and NO3-), anoxic (no aeration, but with surplus NO3-), standard oxygen (DO > 0.2 mg/L), and elevated oxygen (DO > 25 mg/L) conditions. The removal rate of both benzoate and 3-nitrobenzoate decreased under anaerobic condition but not under the anoxic condition; 4-chlorophenol biodegradation, on the other hand, was reduced significantly under both anoxic and anaerobic conditions. The removal rates of aromatic compounds, particularly those of 3-nitrobenzoate and 2,4-dichlorophenol, increased significantly under elevated dissolved oxygen conditions. Our results demonstrated that when the biochemical conditions shifted from oxygen-respiration to nitrate respiration, to anaerobiosis, the biodegradation rates of test aromatic compounds decreased or ceased.
