Abstract A great deal of heat is wasted in intensive public shower facilities, such as those in schools, barracks and natatoriums, which open up at specified time. It will contribute a lot to energy saving and environmental protection with significant economic benefits to recycle the exhaust heat. In this paper, we propose two different kinds of heat pumps (an electric heat pump and an absorption heat pump) in the heat recovery systems. In both system, the used shower water is drained through a pipe and collected in a gray water pool. When the wastewater reaches certain volume, the heat pump system will begin working and recycling heat. The wastewater is filtered and piped to the heat exchanger to exchange heat with the tap water whose temperature will increase from 12 °C to 25 °C with the wastewater temperature dropping from 30 °C to 17 °C. Then the wastewater is piped to the heat pump evaporator and the tap water is piped to the condenser for farther heating. According to the different characteristics of the electric heat pump and absorption heat pump, we also introduce the processes and control methods of different heat recovery systems in details in this paper. Based on a practical example, this paper analyzes and compares the economic and environmental benefits of three retrofitting schemes, including “exhaust heat recovery using electric heat pump”, “exhaust heat recovery using electric heat pump + gas boiler” and “exhaust heat recovery using direct-fired heat pump”. Then we find out that the heat recovery system using direct-fired absorption heat pump has lower energy consumption, less pollution, lower operating cost, and shorter payback period. And it has a promising practical application.

Abstract As a burgeoning theoretical framework, energy justice has been mostly focused on the energy transition in Western countries, where socio-political settings are largely featured by liberalism and democracy, leaving an obvious gap in its application in other socio-political contexts. As a major energy consumer and a leader of the global low-carbon transition, China is characterized by a distinctive socio-political regime. An array of grand strategies to transform its coal-dominant energy structure have been initiated to ameliorate deteriorating environmental crises in particular and materialize a low-carbon transition in general. Based on extensive evidence, this article incorporates the energy justice framework into the analysis of an ongoing energy transition project in rural Northern China. It contributes to the related research in three dimensions. First, empirically, it demonstrates that the coal-to-gas heating transition project has been swamped with social injustices; the absence of measures to address these would lead this mega-project to profound failure. Second, theoretically, it illustrates that the concerns of justice are even more paramount in an authoritarian context where policy processes are characterized by strong political-administrative intervention and the pursuit of efficiency at all cost. In light of this, it stresses the indispensable role of restorative justice as a core tenet in achieving energy justice in authoritarian socio-political contexts, such as China. Third, this study advocates expanding the evaluation parameters of authoritarian environmentalism to include social consequences.

The Nigerian government is committed to sustaining rice production to meet national demand. Nevertheless, political tension and climate-induced stressors remain crucial constraints in achieving policy targets. This study examines whether climate change and political instability significantly threaten rice production in Nigeria. First, we employed nonparametric methods to estimate the country's rainfall and temperature trends between 1980Q1 and 2015Q4. Second, we employed the autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) technique to examine the effects of climate change and political instability on rice production. The results show that while temperature has an increasing pattern, rainfall exhibits no significant trend. The findings from the ARDL estimate reveal that rice production responds negatively to temperature changes but is less sensitive to changes in rainfall. In addition, political instability adversely affects rice production in Nigeria. We argue that Nigeria's slow growth in rice production can be traced back to the impact of climate change and political tension in rice farming areas. As a result, reducing the overall degree of conflict to ensure political stability is critical to boosting the country's self-sufficiency in rice production. We also recommend that farmers be supported and trained to adopt improved rice varieties less prone to extreme climate events while supporting them with irrigation facilities to facilitate rice production.

Abstract The 2013/2017 Nankai Trough (Japan) and 2017 Shenhu Area (China) offshore methane hydrate production tests showed the world the possibility and feasibility of the oceanic methane hydrate production by depressurization. However, the relatively low gas production rate still remained as one of the critical bottlenecks for the economical utilization. This study chose the Nankai Trough as a target area, and aimed at the gas recovery enhancement from the methane hydrate reservoir using vertical wells. A traditional single-vertical-well system and a new dual-vertical-well system were proposed, and special production strategies of the aggressive depressurization and permeability improvement were applied to these two systems for the effectiveness verification. Based on the 15-year simulation results, it was found that the middle low-permeability silt-dominated layers in the reservoir held the key to the gas recovery enhancement, and for the single-vertical-well system, the permeability improvement in this sublayer seemed more reliable and feasible than the aggressive depressurization. On the other hand, the dual-vertical-well system significantly exceeded the single-vertical-well system due to the synergistic effect of the two wellbores, and could raise the average gas production rate (9.5 × 103 m3/day) by one order of magnitude (to 7.9 × 104 m3/day). Moreover, if this new system was combined with the aggressive depressurization, the average gas production rate could be further raised by one order of magnitude (to 3.4 × 105 m3/day).

AbstractA bioreactor system composed of a stirred tank and three tubular bioreactors in series was established, and continuous ethanol fermentation was carried out using a general Saccharomyces cerevisiae strain and a very high gravity medium containing 280 g L−1 glucose, supplemented with 5 g L−1 yeast extract and 3 g L−1 peptone. Sustainable oscillations of glucose, ethanol, and biomass were observed when the tank was operated at the dilution rate of 0.027 h−1, which significantly affected ethanol fermentation performance of the system. After the tubular bioreactors were packed with 1/2″ Intalox ceramic saddles, the oscillations were attenuated and quasi‐steady states were achieved. Residence time distributions were studied for the packed bioreactors by the step input response technique using xylose as a tracer, which was added into the medium at a concentration of 20 g L−1, indicating that the backmixing alleviation assumed for the packed tubular bioreactors could not be established, and its contribution to the oscillation attenuation could not be verified. Furthermore, the role of the packing's yeast cell immobilization in the oscillation attenuation was investigated by packing the tubular bioreactors with packings with significant difference in yeast cell immobilization effects, and the experimental results revealed that only the Intalox ceramic saddles and wood chips with moderate yeast cell immobilization effects could attenuate the oscillations, and correspondingly, improved the ethanol fermentation performance of the system, while the porous polyurethane particles with good yeast cell immobilization effect could not. And the viability analysis for the immobilized yeast cells illustrated that the extremely lower yeast cell viability within the tubular bioreactors packed with the porous polyurethane particles could be the reason for their inefficiency, while the yeast cells loosely immobilized onto the surfaces of the Intalox ceramic saddles and wood chips could be renewed during the fermentation, guaranteeing their viability and making them more efficient in attenuating the oscillations. The packing Raschig rings without yeast cell immobilization effect did not affect the oscillatory behavior of the tubular bioreactors, further supporting the role of the yeast cell immobilization in the oscillation attenuation. In order to enhance the efficiency and benefits of the sludge anaerobic digestion process, K2FeO4 was added to a sludge anaerobic digestion system, and its effects on the system were comprehensively investigated. Results showed that sludge anaerobic digestion was greatly improved by adding 500 mg/L K2FeO4. Biogas and methane productions were increased by 26.6 and 28.4%, respectively. Sludge reduction, protein removal, and the conversion efficiency of dissolved organics were all improved. The mechanism revealed that the disintegration of sludge flocs, enhancement of protease activity, and decrease of soluble sulfide toxicity on microorganisms contributed to biogas production and sludge reduction. Biogas quality was improved, benefitting from the decreasing H2S content in biogas; as additionally, the cost of biogas desulfuration was reduced. In the biogas slurry treatment, the PO43--P concentrations were decreased by 39%, which also reduced the cost of the dephosphorization processes at certain extent.

In industrial production, it is necessary to accurately predict the load changes of multiple nodes before performing accurate load control. To solve this problem, this paper proposes a multinodal short-term load forecasting model based on participation factor of each node and the long-short-term memory (LSTM) network based ensemble learning. A hybrid ensemble strategy based on bootstrap sampling and weighted average sum is proposed to extract the deep features of multinodal load data, while the participation factor is adopted to represent the coupling between master node and slave nodes. Experimental results show the high accuracy of the proposed method in multinodal load forecasting.

Abstract In AP1000 plant, the Automatic Depressurization System (ADS) 1–3 stages operate to discharge the high-temperature and high-pressure steam from the Reactor Coolant System (RCS) primary side to the large heat sink tank In-containment Refueling Water Storage Tank (IRWST) in accidental conditions. The key equipment’s specific shape and arrangement lead to the complicate flow and heat transfer characteristics in IRWST. In the present work, an overall scaled IRWST&ADS sparger experiment has been built up. The thermocouples matrix, flowmeters, pressure transmitters, heat flux sensors, Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) technique, and high speed camera are employed for the measurements of the key thermal and flow parameters. The local steam jets condensation phenomena as well as the overall flow and thermal behavior are investigated. The experimental results indicate that the thermal stratification phenomenon is obvious in IRWST. The criteria of Richardson Number and Stratification Number are utilized to predict and evaluate the thermal stratification extent, respectively. An improved ADS arrangement design is further proposed to reduce the thermal stratification. Moreover, the multi-holes lumped “steam condensation column” is modeled with characteristic parameters, then the steam condensation heat transfer coefficient range in chugging condensation process is estimated. The experimental results provide practical engineering application reference for the effective operation of the passive safety system in AP1000 plant.

Response of aquatic organisms to eutrophication have been well reported, while less studies are available for the recovery of eutrophic lakes following a reduction in the external loading, especially for systems where nitrogen is reduced but the phosphorus concentration is maintained high due to internal loading. Diatoms are nitrate (NO3-N) opportunists but can also use ammonium (NH4-N). They may, therefore, be more sensitive to nitrogen reduction than other algae that typically prefer NH4-N. We document the variations of nutrients and diatoms in subtropical, eutrophic Lake Taihu over 28 yr during which a reduction of the external loading resulted from lake management. According to the results of change point analysis, data on environmental variables were divided into two periods (P1: 1992-2006; P2: 2007-2019) with two different seasons (WS: Winter-Spring; SA: Summer-Autumn), respectively. Compared with P1-WS, the concentration of NH4-N decreased significantly whereas NO3-N showed no significant change in P2-WS. In contrast, NH4-N concentrations were low and showed no significant changes in P1-SA and P2-SA and NO3-N decreased significantly in the latter period. Accordingly, NO3-N: NH4-N mass ratios in P1-SA and P2-WS were all significantly higher than those in P2-SA and P1-WS, respectively. The biomass of WS diatom increased significantly and the timing of the peak biomass shifted from P1-SA to P2-WS since 2007. The SEM analysis showed that NO3-N was retained as a statistically significant predictor for diatom biomass in P1-SA and significant effects of windspeed, zooplankton and NH4-N on diatom biomass in P2-WS. Windspeed and zooplankton have further changed the biomass of diatoms in the case of declining inorganic nitrogen. We conclude that the magnitude of vernal suppression or stimulation of diatom assemblages has increased, concomitant with the variations of NH4-N and NO3-N: NH4-N mass ratios. Diatoms response to NH4-N or NO3-N is apparently changing in response to water temperature in this eutrophic shallow lake. Thus, parallel reductions in external nitrogen loading, along with variations in dominant inorganic nitrogen, will stimulate the growth of diatom and therefore increase the total biomass of phytoplankton in still high internal phosphorus loading, which is should be regarded as a good sign of restoration measures.

Abstract Dolomite, a naturally occurring Ca-based sorbent, shows superior recycling stability in carbonation/calcination cycles for CO2 capture. However, the separation between Ca and Mg in sorbent during recycling weakens the resistance for sintering from MgO, leading to a drastic reduction in the CO2 carrying activity (spent sorbent). This paper presents a novel method for the reactivation of spent dolomite sorbents. Notable activity recovery is achieved by ball milling of the spent sorbent with H2O and dry ice. Powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) results confirm the transformation from oxide (CaO/MgO) to carbonate (CaCO3/CaMg(CO3)2), so that the segregated Ca and Mg in spent sorbent are re-mixed at the atomic level, which is mainly responsible for this effective reactivation. Water plays an irreplaceable role in this process by providing a liquid environment to accelerate the diffusion of the reactants and ionic reactions. In addition, thermogravimetric analysis was carried out on a series of samples with different ball-milling times to determine the suitable reactivation conditions for CO2 capture.
