A.M.O. Notenbaert in OpenAIREHeat stress is a global issue constraining pig productivity, and it is likely to intensify under future climate change. Technological advances in earth observation have made tools available that enable identification and mapping livestock species that are at risk of exposure to heat stress due to climate change. Here, we present a methodology to map the current and likely future heat stress risk in pigs using R software by combining the effects of temperature and relative humidity. We applied the method to growing-finishing pigs in Uganda. We mapped monthly heat stress risk and quantified the number of pigs exposed to heat stress using 18 global circulation models and projected impacts in the 2050s. Results show that more than 800 000 pigs in Uganda will be affected by heat stress in the future. The results can feed into evidence-based policy, planning and targeted resource allocation in the livestock sector.

High nutrient discharge from groundwater (GW) into surface water (SW) have multiple undesirable effects on river water quality. With the aim to estimate the impact of anthropic pressures and river–aquifer interactions on nitrate status in SW, this study integrates two hydrological simulation and water quality models. PATRICAL models SW–GW interactions and RREA models streamflow changes due to human activity. The models were applied to the Júcar River Basin District (RBD), where 33% of the aquifers have a concentration above 50 mg NO3−/L. As a result, there is a direct linear correlation between the nitrate concentration in rivers and aquifers (Júcar r2 = 0.9, and Turia r2 = 0.8), since in these Mediterranean basins, the main amount of river flows comes from groundwater discharge. The concentration of nitrates in rivers and GW tends to increase downstream of the district, where artificial surfaces and agriculture are concentrated. The total NO3− load to Júcar RBD rivers was estimated at 10,202 tN/year (239 kg/km2/year), from which 99% is generated by diffuse pollution, and 3378 tN/year (79 kg/km2/year) is discharged into the Mediterranean Sea. Changes in nitrate concentration in the RBD rivers are strongly related to the source of irrigation water, river–aquifer interactions, and flow regulation. The models used in this paper allow the identification of pollution sources, the forecasting of nitrate concentration in surface and groundwater, and the evaluation of the efficiency of measures to prevent water degradation, among other applications.

El transporte informal ha sido trabajado como una de las constantes en las ciudades latinoamericanas. En la literatura, este fenómeno se relaciona como un efecto de la implementacion de las políticas neoliberales de privatizacion de los sistemas de transporte o como una evidencia de la incapacidad de la Administracion pública y del Estado para hacerse cargo de su espacio de soberania. Este trabajo problematiza estos diagnósticos y sugiere una nueva manera de abordar el transporte informal en las urbes del sur global. Con técnicas etnográficas, el trabajo muestra como la informalidad es un espacio socialmente construido con tres caracteristicas principales: a) la persistencia de hombres prestadores del servicio y mujeres usuarias, ambos de bajos ingresos económicos, solidarios entre si para resistir ante un sistema oficial que los excluye; b) el uso significativo de esta clase de transportes de mujeres de estratos bajos que necesitan movilizarse, de manera flexible y económica, de zonas alejadas de los centros productivos, excluidos de los diseños de rutas de transporte, y c) la burocratización de las prácticas asociadas con la prestación del servicio informal. Estos hallazgos permiten sostener que los espacios urbanos son construcciones sociales que, al estar cruzadas por vectores de poder como el género, hacen que la experiencia geográfica de hombres y mujeres sea diferenciada.

It is a green technology with low energy consumption, not generating high CO2 emissions or polluting effluents. The main food applications derive from its effect on particle size, causing a more homogeneous distribution of fluid elements (particles, globules, droplets, aggregates, etc.) and favouring the release of intracellular components; and its effect on the structure and configuration of chemical components such as polyphenols and macromolecules such as carbohydrates (fibres) and proteins (also microorganisms and enzymes). The challenges of the 21st century lead food industry processing towards obtaining food with high nutritional quality and taking advantage of waste to obtain ingredients with specific properties. For this purpose, soft and non-thermal technologies such as high pressures homogenization have a huge potential. The objective of this work is to review how the need to combine safety, functionality and sustainability in food industry has conditioned the last decade applications of high-pressure homogenization technology.

Sanchez-Alcalde, Luis in OpenAIREThis research aims to show the positive and negative indirect effects of COVID-19 on the environment, particularly in the most affected countries such as China, USA, Italy, and Spain. Our research shows that there is a significant association between contingency measures and improvement in air quality, clean beaches and environmental noise reduction. On the other hand, there are also negative secondary aspects such as the reduction in recycling and the increase in waste, further endangering the contamination of physical spaces (water and land), in addition to air. Global economic activity is expected to return in the coming months in most countries (even if slowly), so decreasing GHG concentrations during a short period is not a sustainable way to clean up our environment.

We propose a methodology to price an insurance contract designed to hedge the volumetric risk associated with weather conditions. Our methodology is based on conditional quantile regressions and adapts Value at Risk (VaR) and Expected Shortfall statistics from the literature on financial econometrics. In our empirical application, we use actual daily meteorological and radiation data for 40 European cities in 13 countries, from April 1, 2011, to December 31, 2021, and calculate the value of the annual insurance premium under reasonable assumptions on the technology of the solar panels and expected energy demand. We consider variables such as temperature, wind speed, and precipitation in our calculations. Our results for the different cities in our sample show that due to the nonlinear impact of weather (mainly temperature and precipitation) on the expected generation losses, it is appropriate to use quantile regressions to calculate the VaR of radiation, conditional on weather factors. Our insurance premium calculations also present a high degree of variation across European, which indicates that risk-diversification opportunities of catastrophic risk due to weather conditions faced by insurance companies exist. This variation is explained by different weather conditions, model adjustment, and the average price of electricity.

Satisfying energy demand has become a global problem that is on the rise due to population growth, infrastructure deterioration, a decline in fossil fuel sources, and high costs for investment, among others. Smart grids, in addition to those challenges that they have at the level of energy generation, have other management challenges derived from the great diversity of components that make them up, such as energy storage systems (batteries, capacitors, etc.), the different types of consumers (controllable, non-controllable loads) and prosumers (electric vehicles, self-sustaining buildings, micro-grid, etc.), among others. Consequently, a distributed control problem is presented, mainly oriented to the coordination of its components. A possible solution is to achieve the participation of each component when conditions are more favorable, such as prioritizing production with renewable energy sources, or taking advantage of prosumers so that they can meet local demand, among other things. Therefore, new strategies with a distributed approach such as bio-inspired emergent controls are necessary. The objective of this work is the specification of an emergent control approach to coordinate a smart grid. This approach allows the coordination of the energy supply in various operating scenarios. The results obtained demonstrate a perfect synchronization between the different smart grid components (agents), prioritizing renewable energy sources, regardless of the operational context (for example, in cases of failures, unsuitable environmental conditions, etc.). Jordi Bartolomé in OpenAIREAbstractChanges in land‐use and climate affect the distribution and diversity of plant and animal species at different spatiotemporal scales. The extent to which species‐specific phenotypic plasticity and biotic interactions mediate organismal adaptation to changing environments, however, remains poorly understood. Woody plant expansion is threatening the extent of alpine grasslands worldwide, and evaluating and predicting its effects on herbivores is of crucial importance. Here, we explore the impact of shrubification on the feeding efficiency of Pyrenean chamois (Rupicapra p. pyrenaica), as well as on the three most abundant coexisting domestic ungulate species: cattle, sheep and horses. We use observational diet composition from May to October and model different scenarios of vegetation availability where shrubland and woodland proliferate at the expense of grassland. We then predicted if the four ungulate species could efficiently utilize their food landscapes with their current dietary specificities measuring their niche breath in each scenario. We observed that the wild counterpart, due to a higher trophic plasticity, is less disturbed by shrubification compared to livestock, which rely primarily on herbaceous plants and will be affected 3.6 times more. Our results suggest that mixed feeders, such as chamois, could benefit from fallow landscapes, and that mountain farmers are at a growing economic risk worldwide due to changing land‐use practices and climate conditions.

Natural resource managers face the need to develop strategies to adapt to projected future climates. Few existing climate adaptation frameworks prescribe where to place management actions to be most effective under anticipated future climate conditions. We developed an approach to spatially allocate climate adaptation actions and applied the method to whitebark pine (WBP; Pinus albicaulis) in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem (GYE). WBP is expected to be vulnerable to climate-mediated shifts in suitable habitat, pests, pathogens, and fire. We spatially prioritized management actions aimed at mitigating climate impacts to WBP under two management strategies: (1) current management and (2) climate-informed management. The current strategy reflected management actions permissible under existing policy and access constraints. Our goal was to understand how consideration of climate might alter the placement of management actions, so the climate-informed strategies did not include these constraints. The spatial distribution of actions differed among the current and climate-informed management strategies, with 33-60% more wilderness area prioritized for action under climate-informed management. High priority areas for implementing management actions include the 1-8% of the GYE where current and climate-informed management agreed, since this is where actions are most likely to be successful in the long-term and where current management permits implementation. Areas where climate-informed strategies agreed with one another but not with current management (6-22% of the GYE) are potential locations for experimental testing of management actions. Our method for spatial climate adaptation planning is applicable to any species for which information regarding climate vulnerability and climate-mediated risk factors is available.

The objective is to study the distribution of passengers inside urban trains for different levels of crowding. The study is carried out through the observation of videos made by laboratory experiments in which a mock-up of a carriage represented the boarding and alighting process. The Fruin’s Level of Service (LOS) was adopted, but with a different approach, in which the train is divided into five zones (central hall, central aisle, side aisle, central seats and side seats). The experiments are based on the behavior of passengers in the London Underground; however, this study could be expanded to any conventional rail or LRT system. For the laboratory experiments, it is proposed to build a metro carriage and a corresponding platform section, and the scenarios will include different levels of crowding of passengers boarding and alighting to produce a variation in the density on the platform. According to the crowding level, the results allow obtaining the distribution and movements generated by passengers in the five zones for different instants of time during the process of boarding and alighting. It is observed that passengers are distributed according to safety and efficiency conditions. For example, passengers tried to avoid contact with each other unless it is inevitable. In relation to comfort, the seats of the carriage are always used even if there is a low level of crowding. If the crowding level increases, the boarding and alighting time go up. In addition, passengers will spend one or two seconds more if the “let’s get off before getting on the carriage” behavior is breached. This kind of experiment can be used in further research as a way to test “what-if” scenarios using this new method of discretization of the space inside the train, which cannot be tested in existing stations due to restrictions such as the weather, variability of the train frequency, current design of the trains, among others. New experiments are necessary for future research to include other types of passengers such as people with disabilities or reduced mobility.
