(Marian);According to the fifth assessment report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, changes in land use through urbanization and agriculture are the key anthropogenic effects of climate change. Thus, the preservation of natural environment of urban areas is essential for conserving water and soil, while still adjusting the microclimatic variables (temperature, precipitation, relative humidity, etc.) and stabilizing the natural ecological system from destruction. It has been observed that most parts of city's green vegetation have been lost due to housing developments and commercial activities. This study was carried out to assess the effect of the change in land use on a modern city like Sunyani, by observing the significant changes in vegetation cover from LANDSAT TM imagery over a 31-year period (1986-2017). From the study, there was significant decline of vegetation cover from 1986 to 1999, and no significant change from 1999 to 2017. There were also significant changes in the built-up areas from 1986 to 1999 and no significant change from 1999 to 2017. Adoption of sustainable and environmentally friendly technologies that maintain open green vegetation is recommended for future city planning.

(Nikola); Grym, J. (Jan); Vaniš, J. (Jan);We report on the properties of Eu-doped ZnO nanorods prepared by chemical bath deposition from aqueous solutions in an autoclave. The autoclave enables to grow the nanorods above the boiling point of water. The nanorods were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, secondary ion mass spectroscopy, and low temperature photoluminescence spectroscopy. Under the UV light excitation, the nanorods show a strong blue emission at 450 nm, which is associated with the 4f(6)5d - 4f(4) transitions of Eu2+ ions. We discuss the mechanisms responsible for the blue luminescence. We further clarify how the growth parameters affect the morphology and the optical properties of the nanorods. Growth temperatures above the boiling point of water significantly influence the intensity ratio of the near band edge emission to the deep level emission and greatly enhance optical quality of the nanorods.

Sageman in OpenAIREClimate-controlled changes in eustatic sea level (ESL) are linked to transfers of water between ocean and land, thus offering a rare insight into the past hydrological cycle. In this study, we examine the timing and phase of Milankovitch-scale ESL cycles in the peak Cretaceous greenhouse, the early Turonian (-93-94 million years, Myr, ago). A high-resolution astronomical framework established for the Bohemian Cretaceous Basin (central Europe) suggests a -400-kyr pace and a distinct asymmetry of interpreted ESL cycles. The rising limbs of ESL change constitute only 20-30 % of the cycle, and are encased entirely within the falling phase of the 405-kyr eccentricity. The intervening ESL falls (<= 6 m in magnitude) are more protracted, starting within 70 kyr prior to the eccentricity minima and culminating -60 kyr after the 405-kyr eccentricity maxima. Despite similarities to the sawtooth shape of -100-kyr glacioeustatic oscillations of the Late Pleistocene, the time scales and phasing are unparalleled in the Pleistocene icehouse. A similar, 405-kyr pace is found in ice-volume variations of the early Miocene, but the timing of glacioeustatic change relative to eccentricity forcing is incompatible with the phase of greenhouse sea-level oscillations. The phasing points to major differences in the geographic location and insolation sensitivity of the key hydrological reservoirs under icehouse and greenhouse regimes. The inferred structure of greenhouse eustasy points to low- or middle-latitude water storage, likely aquifers, that charge (expand) with rising seasonality variations and discharge (contract) with declining seasonality amplitudes on the 405-kyr scale. The net volume of water transferred on these time scales is within 2.2 x 106 km3, equivalent to <= 10 % of the present-day storage in the uppermost 2 km of continental crust. Potential additive interference with steric eustasy, proportionally relevant during greenhouse regimes, could reduce the volumes required for continental storage.

Ostrava in the Moravian-Silesian region (Czech Republic) is a European air pollution hot spot for airborne particulate matter (PM), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and ultrafine particles (UFPs). Air pollution source apportionment is essential for implementation of successful abatement strategies. UFPs or nanoparticles of diameter <100 nm exhibit the highest deposition efficiency in human lungs. To permit apportionment of PM sources at the hot-spot including nanoparticles, Positive Matrix Factorization (PMF) was applied to highly time resolved particle number size distributions (NSD, 14 nm-10 μm) and PM0.09-1.15 chemical composition. Diurnal patterns, meteorological variables, gaseous pollutants, organic markers, and associations between the NSD factors and chemical composition factors were used to identify the pollution sources. The PMF on the NSD reveals two factors in the ultrafine size range: industrial UFPs (28%, number mode diameter - NMD 45 nm), industrial/fresh road traffic nanoparticles (26%, NMD 26 nm); three factors in the accumulation size range: urban background (24%, NMD 93 nm), coal burning (14%, volume mode diameter - VMD 0.5 μm), regional pollution (3%, VMD 0.8 μm) and one factor in the coarse size range: industrial coarse particles/road dust (2%, VMD 5 μm). The PMF analysis of PM0.09-1.15 revealed four factors: SIA/CC/BB (52%), road dust (18%), sinter/steel (16%), iron production (16%). The factors in the ultrafine size range resolved with NSD have a positive correlation with sinter/steel production and iron production factors resolved with chemical composition. Coal combustion factor resolved with NSD has moderate correlation with SIA/CC/BB factor. The organic markers homohopanes correlate with coal combustion and the levoglucosan correlates with urban background. The PMF applications to NSD and chemical composition datasets are complementary. PAHs in PM1 were found to be associated with coal combustion factor.

(Jana); Hošek, J. (Jiří);The installations of weather-dependent renewable energy sources, such as wind turbines and solar plants, increased significantly in the last two decades. They are often built in remote areas without appropriate power grid connections. The construction of a new power transmission line or improving the old one requires significant financial and time costs. The grid operators prefer to limit the power production in order to keep the load of the power line under its rating. Instead of broadly-used static rating, the existing lines can be rated in real time using a dynamic thermal rating (DTR) system. DTR of power transmission lines can usually provide a significant increase of transmission capacity compared to the static rating. The main inputs to DTR systems are measured or forecast meteorological data. The relation of DTR to the renewable resources is obvious when we consider input parameters to the calculation scheme - wind speed, ambient temperature and shortwave radiation. Exactly same variables are determining production of wind and solar energy. A case study of virtual wind farm and corresponding power transmission line shows limits of renewable energy production at given site. The results demonstrate that the optimal size of wind farm is approximately triple when using DTR comparing to the static rating.

Karel Mařík in OpenAIREAbstract The gas suction rate of a conventional liquid–gas ejector pump was measured on a modular pilot plant unit utilizing convergent nozzles and a water–air system. Hydraulic characteristics were measured for various water flow rates, suction and discharge pressures, and ejector geometries, covering a wide range of configurations and operating conditions. The device configurations, providing the most stable and reproducible results, were identified. The air flow rates measured with these configurations were correlated by a simple, three-parameter correlation with a relative standard deviation (RSD) of 11%. The performance and behavior of the ejector in less stable configurations are discussed and the recommendations for the design of optimally operating units are provided. Finally, the correlation is tested against available literature data. The ejectors with comparable geometry agree well with the proposed correlation (within 20% RSD). The reasonable agreement with the discussed differences is found for other literature data. This comparison results in the validation of the proposed correlation to provide a safe prediction of minimal gas entrainment in units of various geometries, orientation and operating conditions.

Selenium (Se) is an indispensable microelement in our diet and health issues resulting from deficiencies are well documented. Se-containing food supplements are available on the market including Se-enriched Chlorella vulgaris (Se-Chlorella) which accumulates Se in the form of Se-amino acids (Se-AAs). Despite its popular uses, data about the bioaccessibility of Se-AAs from Se-Chlorella are completely missing. In the present study, gastrointestinal digestion times were optimized and the in vitro bioaccessibility of Se-AAs in Se-Chlorella, Se-yeast, a commercially available Se-enriched food supplement (Se-supplement) and Se rich foods (Se-foods) were compared. Higher bioaccessibility was found in Se-Chlorella (∼49%) as compared to Se-yeast (∼21%), Se-supplement (∼32%) and Se-foods. The methods used in production of Se-Chlorella biomass were also investigated. We found that disintegration increased bioaccessibility whereas the drying process had no effect. Similarly, temperature treatment by microwave oven also increased bioaccessibility whereas boiling water did not.

Experiment and theory are combined to study the interaction of low energy electrons with microhydrated uracil and its halogenated analogues 5-fluorouracil and 5-bromouracil. We report electron ionization (EI) and electron attachment (EA) mass spectra for the uracils with different degrees of hydration. Both EI and EA lead to evaporation of water molecules. The number of evaporated molecules serves as a measure of the energy transferred to the solvent. Upon EI, the amount of energy transferred to neighboring water molecules is similar for all three studied species. On the other hand, the energy transferred upon EA rises significantly from uracil to 5-fluorouracil and 5-bromouracil. 5-Bromouracil is the only studied molecule that undergoes dissociative electron attachment after hydration at the studied energy of 1.2 eV. Theoretical modeling of the energetics for the electron attachment process allows for setting the energy transferred to the solvent on the absolute scale. We discuss the importance of this energy for the radiosensitization.

Hurba, O. (Oleksiy) in OpenAIREGasification of several organic materials in steam plasma generated in a special plasma torch with a water-stabilized arc was investigated. Thermal plasma with very high enthalpy and low mass flow rate is produced in an arc discharge which is in direct contact with water. Biomass and several types of solid and liquid organic waste were gasified by plasma aided reactions of materials with water, carbon dioxide and oxygen. Composition of produced gas, energy balance of gasification process and gasification efficiency were determined from measured data. Synthesis gas with high content of hydrogen and carbon monoxide and very low content of carbon dioxide, light hydrocarbons and tar was obtained for all tested materials. Comparison of measured data with results of theoretical computations confirmed that steam plasma gasification produces syngas with composition which is close to the one obtained from thermodynamic equilibrium calculations.
