AbstractAlthough canopy height has long been a focus of interest in ecology, it has remained difficult to study at large spatial scales. Recently, satellite‐borne LiDAR equipment produced the first systematic high resolution maps of vegetation height worldwide. Here we show that this new resource reveals three marked modes in tropical canopy height ~40, ~12, and ~2 m corresponding to forest, savanna, and treeless landscapes. The distribution of these modes is consistent with the often hypothesized forest‐savanna bistability and suggests that both states can be stable in areas with a mean annual precipitation between ~1,500 and ~2,000 mm. Although the canopy height states correspond largely to the much discussed tree cover states, there are differences, too. For instance, there are places with savanna‐like sparse tree cover that have a forest‐like high canopy, suggesting that rather than true savanna, those are thinned relicts of forest. This illustrates how complementary sets of remotely sensed indicators may provide increasingly sophisticated ways to study ecological phenomena at a global scale.

Coherence in Photosynthesis It is unclear how energy absorbed by pigments in antenna proteins is transferred to the central site of chemical catalysis during photosynthesis. Hildner et al. (p. 1448 ) observed coherence—prolonged persistence of a quantum mechanical phase relationship—at the single-molecule level in light-harvesting complexes from purple bacteria. The results bolster conclusions from past ensemble measurements that coherence plays a pivotal role in photosynthetic energy transfer. Hayes et al. (p. 1431 , published online 18 April) examined a series of small molecules comprised of bridged chromophores that also manifest prolonged coherence.

AbstractClimate change and land‐use change are two major drivers of biome shifts causing habitat and biodiversity loss. What is missing is a continental‐scale future projection of the estimated relative impacts of both drivers on biome shifts over the course of this century. Here, we provide such a projection for the biodiverse region of Latin America under four socio‐economic development scenarios. We find that across all scenarios 5–6% of the total area will undergo biome shifts that can be attributed to climate change until 2099. The relative impact of climate change on biome shifts may overtake land‐use change even under an optimistic climate scenario, if land‐use expansion is halted by the mid‐century. We suggest that constraining land‐use change and preserving the remaining natural vegetation early during this century creates opportunities to mitigate climate‐change impacts during the second half of this century. Our results may guide the evaluation of socio‐economic scenarios in terms of their potential for biome conservation under global change.

An aerodynamic shape optimization method for a horizontal axis wind turbine is developed and verified through experimentation with a laboratory-scale wind turbine. Our method is based on matching the rotor's and the coupled generator's torque. Prior to shape optimization, an initial rotor design is established with a hybrid use of Schmitz and blade element momentum theories. The experimental verification of the developed method is conducted with a small-scale wind turbine; thus, the operating Reynolds number is one order of magnitude lower than large-scale wind turbines. Therefore, a high-lift low-Re airfoil, namely, SG6043, is selected for the blade along the whole span. The shape is optimized by determining the optimum chord and cumulative pitch angle distributions by manipulating the tapering and twisting of the blade. The objective of the optimization is to maximize the turbine's power coefficient Cp, while maintaining the torque equal to that of the generator. The generator's characteristics are found through experimentations which are conducted apart from the wind tunnel experiments. During the optimization process, the local aerodynamic forces on the blade are calculated by interfacing the optimization program with XFOIL; thus, the torque and power can be calculated for the rotor at each iteration step. The optimized turbine performance is evaluated under a design and off-design operating condition. The performance verification experiments are carried out in the wind tunnel with a specially designed setup. A comparison of the measured and computed performance shows good agreement.

Abstract Plant competitive interactions influence the effect of herbicides, and the effect of competitive interactions on plant responses may be important to include in the ecological risk assessment of herbicides. In the present study the effect of competitive interactions and sublethal doses of 2 herbicides on plant species was investigated in competition experiments and fitted to empirical competition models. Two nontarget species commonly found in agroecosystems (Centaurea cyanus L. and Silene noctiflora L.) and 2 herbicides (glyphosate and metsulfuron methyl) were used in separate experiments. Plants were sprayed at the 6- to 8-leaf stage. Effects of herbicide treatments and plant density were modeled by generalization of a discrete hyperbolic competition model. The 10% effective dose (ED10) was calculated for C. cyanus. All experiments showed that as density increased, plants were negatively affected. Furthermore, in all cases, C. cyanus remained a better competitor than S. noctiflora. Nevertheless, the density of S. noctiflora (competitor) was an influential element in determining the ED10 of C. cyanus measured at the mature stage. With herbicide exposure, the competitive interactions were further altered; C. cyanus was less affected by glyphosate when S. noctiflora increased to high density. In contrast, at the young stage, conspecific density was important in determining the sensitivity of C. cyanus to metsulfuron methyl, whereas the density of the competitor S. noctiflora had a limited influence. Overall, the results demonstrate the importance of integrating the effect of herbicide and species interactions measured at the reproductive stage into the ecological risk assessments of pesticides. Abstract This study presents an evaluation of the error induced by neglecting the effect of air compressibility in modelling Oscillating Water Column (OWC) wave energy converters. A compressible two phases CFD model in the open-source software package OpenFOAM® is validated and then used to simulate a fixed OWC device, detached from the sea bottom. A comparative analysis of the results obtained by simulating the device at full-scale (1:1) and at four smaller scales (1:50, 1:25, 1:10 and 1:5) is performed in order to assess the scale effects associated with air compressibility. Indeed, for the air pressure levels considered in the simulations (up to 350 Pa at model scale 1:50), the effect of neglecting the air compressibility results in an overestimation up to about 15% for the air pressure in the OWC chamber and the subsequent air volume flux, but less than 10% for the capture width ratio. This overestimation increases with increasing pressure level. Results are analysed in terms of dimensionless parameters and a new parameter, strongly related to the compressible effects, is proposed and used to provide generalized equations delivering correction factors.

Antiprotons have been suggested as a possibly superior modality for radiotherapy, due to the energy released when antiprotons annihilate, which enhances the Bragg peak and introduces a high-LET component to the dose. However, concerns are expressed about the inferior lateral dose distribution caused by the annihilation products.We use the Monte Carlo code FLUKA to generate depth-dose kernels for protons, antiprotons, and carbon ions. Using these we then build virtual treatment plans optimized according to ICRU recommendations for the different beam modalities, which then are recalculated with FLUKA. Dose-volume histograms generated from these plans can be used to compare the different irradiations.The enhancement in physical and possibly biological dose from annihilating antiprotons can significantly lower the dose in the entrance channel; but only at the expense of a diffuse low dose background from long-range secondary particles. Lateral dose distributions are improved using active beam delivery methods, instead of flat fields.Dose-volume histograms for different treatment scenarios show that antiprotons have the potential to reduce the volume of normal tissue receiving medium to high dose, however, in the low dose region antiprotons are inferior to both protons and carbon ions. This limits the potential usage to situations where dose to normal tissue must be reduced as much as possible.

China joined the ICOM in 1983. Joining such an international community of museological experts and scholars implied sharing the standards and founding principles, however if we consider the development and the status quo of the art museum system in China, it is possible to point out some contradictions and peculiarities. Since the early 1980s, following a renovation process of the entirety of Chinese national institutions, the museum system has been enjoying an unprecedented development. As well, a more general discourse on the cultural heritage of the country has increasingly gained a prominent position in the cultural policy agenda. As far as art museums are concerned, since the end of the 1990s, the country has been experiencing a rapid and unprecedented development as well, encompassing both the state-owned and private sector. However, today the proliferation of art museums appears to be more driven by the compulsion for a status symbol rather than pursuing a cultural mission. Therefore, a key question arises concerning the quality of these art institutions, their effective role in the promotion of art, and their cultural impact. This study aims to enrich the debate on museums of contemporary art, and intends to offer a parameter of sustainability in order to evaluate the Chinese art museum system.

For chemical reactions in complex environments, the combination of quantum mechanics (QM) with a molecular mechanics (MM) representation is usually necessary in a hybrid QM/MM framework. However, even within the QM/MM approximation, the affordable sampling of the phase space is, in general, quite restricted. To reduce drastically the computational cost of the simulations, several methods such as umbrella sampling require performing a priori a selection of a reaction coordinate. The quality of the computed results, in an affordable computational time, is intimately related to the reaction coordinate election which is, in general, a nontrivial task. In this work, we provide an approach to model reactive processes in complex environments that does not require the a priori selection of a reaction coordinate. The proposed methodology combines QM/MM simulations with an extrapolation of the nudged elastic bands (NEB) method to the free energy surface (FENEB). We present and apply our own FENEB scheme to optimize MFEP in different reactive processes, using QM/MM frameworks at semiempirical and density functional theory levels. Our implementation is based on performing the FENEB optimization by uncoupling the optimization of the band in a perpendicular and tangential direction. In each step, a full optimization with the spring force is performed, which guarantees that the images remain evenly distributed. The robustness of the method and the influence of sampling on the quality of the optimized MFEP and its associated free energy barrier are studied. We show that the FENEB method provides a good estimation of the reaction barrier even with relatively short simulation times, supporting that its combination with QM/MM frameworks provides an adequate tool to study chemical processes in complex environments.

AbstractAlthough canopy height has long been a focus of interest in ecology, it has remained difficult to study at large spatial scales. Recently, satellite‐borne LiDAR equipment produced the first systematic high resolution maps of vegetation height worldwide. Here we show that this new resource reveals three marked modes in tropical canopy height ~40, ~12, and ~2 m corresponding to forest, savanna, and treeless landscapes. The distribution of these modes is consistent with the often hypothesized forest‐savanna bistability and suggests that both states can be stable in areas with a mean annual precipitation between ~1,500 and ~2,000 mm. Although the canopy height states correspond largely to the much discussed tree cover states, there are differences, too. For instance, there are places with savanna‐like sparse tree cover that have a forest‐like high canopy, suggesting that rather than true savanna, those are thinned relicts of forest. This illustrates how complementary sets of remotely sensed indicators may provide increasingly sophisticated ways to study ecological phenomena at a global scale.

Coherence in Photosynthesis It is unclear how energy absorbed by pigments in antenna proteins is transferred to the central site of chemical catalysis during photosynthesis. Hildner et al. (p. 1448 ) observed coherence—prolonged persistence of a quantum mechanical phase relationship—at the single-molecule level in light-harvesting complexes from purple bacteria. The results bolster conclusions from past ensemble measurements that coherence plays a pivotal role in photosynthetic energy transfer. Hayes et al. (p. 1431 , published online 18 April) examined a series of small molecules comprised of bridged chromophores that also manifest prolonged coherence.

AbstractClimate change and land‐use change are two major drivers of biome shifts causing habitat and biodiversity loss. What is missing is a continental‐scale future projection of the estimated relative impacts of both drivers on biome shifts over the course of this century. Here, we provide such a projection for the biodiverse region of Latin America under four socio‐economic development scenarios. We find that across all scenarios 5–6% of the total area will undergo biome shifts that can be attributed to climate change until 2099. The relative impact of climate change on biome shifts may overtake land‐use change even under an optimistic climate scenario, if land‐use expansion is halted by the mid‐century. We suggest that constraining land‐use change and preserving the remaining natural vegetation early during this century creates opportunities to mitigate climate‐change impacts during the second half of this century. Our results may guide the evaluation of socio‐economic scenarios in terms of their potential for biome conservation under global change.

An aerodynamic shape optimization method for a horizontal axis wind turbine is developed and verified through experimentation with a laboratory-scale wind turbine. Our method is based on matching the rotor's and the coupled generator's torque. Prior to shape optimization, an initial rotor design is established with a hybrid use of Schmitz and blade element momentum theories. The experimental verification of the developed method is conducted with a small-scale wind turbine; thus, the operating Reynolds number is one order of magnitude lower than large-scale wind turbines. Therefore, a high-lift low-Re airfoil, namely, SG6043, is selected for the blade along the whole span. The shape is optimized by determining the optimum chord and cumulative pitch angle distributions by manipulating the tapering and twisting of the blade. The objective of the optimization is to maximize the turbine's power coefficient Cp, while maintaining the torque equal to that of the generator. The generator's characteristics are found through experimentations which are conducted apart from the wind tunnel experiments. During the optimization process, the local aerodynamic forces on the blade are calculated by interfacing the optimization program with XFOIL; thus, the torque and power can be calculated for the rotor at each iteration step. The optimized turbine performance is evaluated under a design and off-design operating condition. The performance verification experiments are carried out in the wind tunnel with a specially designed setup. A comparison of the measured and computed performance shows good agreement.

Abstract Plant competitive interactions influence the effect of herbicides, and the effect of competitive interactions on plant responses may be important to include in the ecological risk assessment of herbicides. In the present study the effect of competitive interactions and sublethal doses of 2 herbicides on plant species was investigated in competition experiments and fitted to empirical competition models. Two nontarget species commonly found in agroecosystems (Centaurea cyanus L. and Silene noctiflora L.) and 2 herbicides (glyphosate and metsulfuron methyl) were used in separate experiments. Plants were sprayed at the 6- to 8-leaf stage. Effects of herbicide treatments and plant density were modeled by generalization of a discrete hyperbolic competition model. The 10% effective dose (ED10) was calculated for C. cyanus. All experiments showed that as density increased, plants were negatively affected. Furthermore, in all cases, C. cyanus remained a better competitor than S. noctiflora. Nevertheless, the density of S. noctiflora (competitor) was an influential element in determining the ED10 of C. cyanus measured at the mature stage. With herbicide exposure, the competitive interactions were further altered; C. cyanus was less affected by glyphosate when S. noctiflora increased to high density. In contrast, at the young stage, conspecific density was important in determining the sensitivity of C. cyanus to metsulfuron methyl, whereas the density of the competitor S. noctiflora had a limited influence. Overall, the results demonstrate the importance of integrating the effect of herbicide and species interactions measured at the reproductive stage into the ecological risk assessments of pesticides. Abstract This study presents an evaluation of the error induced by neglecting the effect of air compressibility in modelling Oscillating Water Column (OWC) wave energy converters. A compressible two phases CFD model in the open-source software package OpenFOAM® is validated and then used to simulate a fixed OWC device, detached from the sea bottom. A comparative analysis of the results obtained by simulating the device at full-scale (1:1) and at four smaller scales (1:50, 1:25, 1:10 and 1:5) is performed in order to assess the scale effects associated with air compressibility. Indeed, for the air pressure levels considered in the simulations (up to 350 Pa at model scale 1:50), the effect of neglecting the air compressibility results in an overestimation up to about 15% for the air pressure in the OWC chamber and the subsequent air volume flux, but less than 10% for the capture width ratio. This overestimation increases with increasing pressure level. Results are analysed in terms of dimensionless parameters and a new parameter, strongly related to the compressible effects, is proposed and used to provide generalized equations delivering correction factors.

Antiprotons have been suggested as a possibly superior modality for radiotherapy, due to the energy released when antiprotons annihilate, which enhances the Bragg peak and introduces a high-LET component to the dose. However, concerns are expressed about the inferior lateral dose distribution caused by the annihilation products.We use the Monte Carlo code FLUKA to generate depth-dose kernels for protons, antiprotons, and carbon ions. Using these we then build virtual treatment plans optimized according to ICRU recommendations for the different beam modalities, which then are recalculated with FLUKA. Dose-volume histograms generated from these plans can be used to compare the different irradiations.The enhancement in physical and possibly biological dose from annihilating antiprotons can significantly lower the dose in the entrance channel; but only at the expense of a diffuse low dose background from long-range secondary particles. Lateral dose distributions are improved using active beam delivery methods, instead of flat fields.Dose-volume histograms for different treatment scenarios show that antiprotons have the potential to reduce the volume of normal tissue receiving medium to high dose, however, in the low dose region antiprotons are inferior to both protons and carbon ions. This limits the potential usage to situations where dose to normal tissue must be reduced as much as possible.

China joined the ICOM in 1983. Joining such an international community of museological experts and scholars implied sharing the standards and founding principles, however if we consider the development and the status quo of the art museum system in China, it is possible to point out some contradictions and peculiarities. Since the early 1980s, following a renovation process of the entirety of Chinese national institutions, the museum system has been enjoying an unprecedented development. As well, a more general discourse on the cultural heritage of the country has increasingly gained a prominent position in the cultural policy agenda. As far as art museums are concerned, since the end of the 1990s, the country has been experiencing a rapid and unprecedented development as well, encompassing both the state-owned and private sector. However, today the proliferation of art museums appears to be more driven by the compulsion for a status symbol rather than pursuing a cultural mission. Therefore, a key question arises concerning the quality of these art institutions, their effective role in the promotion of art, and their cultural impact. This study aims to enrich the debate on museums of contemporary art, and intends to offer a parameter of sustainability in order to evaluate the Chinese art museum system.

Semelak; Ari Zeida; Nicolás O. Foglia; Darío A. Estrin;The determination of minimum free energy pathways (MFEP) is one of the most widely used strategies to study reactive processes. For chemical reactions in complex environments, the combination of quantum mechanics (QM) with a molecular mechanics (MM) representation is usually necessary in a hybrid QM/MM framework. However, even within the QM/MM approximation, the affordable sampling of the phase space is, in general, quite restricted. To reduce drastically the computational cost of the simulations, several methods such as umbrella sampling require performing a priori a selection of a reaction coordinate. The quality of the computed results, in an affordable computational time, is intimately related to the reaction coordinate election which is, in general, a nontrivial task. In this work, we provide an approach to model reactive processes in complex environments that does not require the a priori selection of a reaction coordinate. The proposed methodology combines QM/MM simulations with an extrapolation of the nudged elastic bands (NEB) method to the free energy surface (FENEB). We present and apply our own FENEB scheme to optimize MFEP in different reactive processes, using QM/MM frameworks at semiempirical and density functional theory levels. Our implementation is based on performing the FENEB optimization by uncoupling the optimization of the band in a perpendicular and tangential direction. In each step, a full optimization with the spring force is performed, which guarantees that the images remain evenly distributed. The robustness of the method and the influence of sampling on the quality of the optimized MFEP and its associated free energy barrier are studied. We show that the FENEB method provides a good estimation of the reaction barrier even with relatively short simulation times, supporting that its combination with QM/MM frameworks provides an adequate tool to study chemical processes in complex environments.
