Lipkin;The principles of pulse electrolysis modes selection and their effect on the size distribution of the powder electrolytic copper in electrolyte with additions of water-soluble polymers, polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) and polyacrylamide (PAA) are considered in the paper. The research conducted with use of chronopotentiometry and potential transients as well as a simulation model of the electrocrystallisation process showed that the values of pulse duration were greater than the transient time of electroactive species and the pause duration equal to the linear part of potential transient was optimum to obtain a powder with a predominant fraction of nanoscale particles . PVP and PAA additives help to reduce the average particle size in the nanoscale fraction copper powder particles to 25-40 nm. Selected current pulse mode effect corresponds to the reduction of the emergence of new centers of crystallization probability and the adatoms on the surface of the cathode movement probability.

For the trend to continue there is an urgent need to secure clean, modern, affordable, reliable, and sustainable energy sources for all people and all societies, while reducing emissions from greenhouse gasses and other carbon footprints linked with energy. All energy resources, whether renewable or nonrenewable, are harvested from the environment and as a result impact the environment. The paper highlights the need to explore energy resources in a sustainable manner. The study further evaluates existing metrics to track and ascertain energy sustainability in a sustainable development context. In methodological terms, the authors conduct a literature review to enable the authors to arrive with best suggestions. Several factors were considered as pragmatic steps needed to achieve energy sustainability. Energy access, energy sustainability indicators, and innovation were appraised to aid energy sustainability for now and for future generations.

Redding;Understanding the emergence and subsequent spread of human infectious diseases is a critical global challenge, especially for high-impact zoonotic and vector-borne diseases. Global climate and land-use change are likely to alter host and vector distributions, but understanding the impact of these changes on the burden of infectious diseases is difficult. Here, we use a Bayesian spatial model to investigate environmental drivers of one of the most important diseases in Africa, Rift Valley fever (RVF). The model uses a hierarchical approach to determine how environmental drivers vary both spatially and seasonally, and incorporates the effects of key climatic oscillations, to produce a continental risk map of RVF in livestock (as a proxy for human RVF risk). We find RVF risk has a distinct seasonal spatial pattern influenced by climatic variation, with the majority of cases occurring in South Africa and Kenya in the first half of an El Niño year. Irrigation, rainfall and human population density were the main drivers of RVF cases, independent of seasonal, climatic or spatial variation. By accounting more subtly for the patterns in RVF data, we better determine the importance of underlying environmental drivers, and also make space- and time-sensitive predictions to better direct future surveillance resources. Despite economic development and social improvements, millions of family farmers in Ethiopia are still struggling with food insecurity. Lack of technology adoption by family farmers is often considered as the root cause for low agricultural productivity and persistence of food insecurity. Based on a study of family farms in southwestern Ethiopia, we show the complex nexus between family farming, food insecurity, and agricultural productivity. We collected qualitative and quantitative data through 300 sample household interviews; expert interviews with elders and village chairmen, agricultural extension agents, farmers’ cooperative heads, as well as experts in NGOs, research institutes, and state agencies; and on-farm observations with in-depth interviews and discussions with individual farmers. Our findings illustrate that everyday experiences, culture, knowledge, and priorities of farmers coupled with ecological and political factors play crucial roles—and need more consideration than the classic ‘lack of technology’ theorem.

Granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) has immunomodulating properties that could be beneficial for adjunctive treatment of severe infections. Cytokine release from stimulated whole blood and expression of neutrophil surface and apoptosis markers in response to G-CSF were studied in human volunteers under physiologic conditions and after ethanol pretreatment. Levels of interleukin (IL)-1 receptor antagonist and soluble tumor necrosis factor (TNF) receptor-1 were significantly increased after G-CSF, whereas TNF-alpha and IL-10 concentrations were reduced, and IL-1beta and IL-8 remained unchanged. There was a significant inhibition of neutrophil apoptosis and increased expression of complement regulatory protein CD55 without changes in CD11b, CD14, and CD59 expression. These effects were well preserved after ethanol pretreatment, which per se led to an increase in apoptosis and decreased CD55 expression. Thus, G-CSF treatment was associated with a reduction of the proinflammatory cytokine response and enhanced neutrophil survival in vivo, suggesting a therapeutic potential of G-CSF for severe infections in the nonneutropenic host.

We consider three climate policy scenarios that reach radiative forcing levels in 2100 of three Representative Concentration Pathways (RCPs). These targets are achieved by introducing a global uniform tax on all GHG emissions in the Integrated Assessment Model WITCH, assuming both full as well as limited technological flexibility. The resulting consumption patterns of fossil fuels are used to estimate the physical impacts and the economic benefits of pollution reductions on human health and on key assets by implementing the most advanced version of the ExternE methodology with its Impact Pathway Analysis. We find that the mitigation scenario compatible with 2°C reduces total pollution costs in Europe by 76%. Discounted ancillary benefits are more than €2.5 trillion between 2015 and 2100. The monetary value of reduced pollution is equal to €22 per abated ton of CO2 in Europe. Less strict climate policy scenarios generate overall smaller, but still considerable, local benefits (14 € or 18 € per abated ton of CO2). Without discounting, the ancillary benefits are in a range of €36 to €50 per ton of CO2 abated. Cumulative ancillary benefits exceed the cumulative additional cost of electricity generation in Europe. Each European country alone would be better off if the mitigation policy was implemented, although the local benefits in absolute terms vary significantly across the countries. We can identify the relative losers and winners of ancillary benefits in Europe. In particular, we find that large European countries contribute to as much as they benefit from ancillary benefits. The scenarios with limited technology flexibility do deliver results that are similar to the full technology flexibility scenario.

Wheat-dependent exercise-induced anaphylaxis (WDEIA) is a severe and potentially life-threatening allergy caused by wheat ingestion and most commonly in combination with exercise.To investigate the role and impact of different cofactors (exercise, aspirin, and alcohol) in patients with WDEIA.We studied 25 adult patients with WDEIA. Diagnostic workup included specific IgE to omega-5 gliadin and skin prick test with wheat flour and gluten. Titrated oral challenge was performed with gluten at rest, combined with treadmill exercise, aspirin, alcohol, or a combination of exercise and aspirin.A positive challenge to gluten was found at rest (without cofactors) in 48% (12 of 25), with exercise in 92% (23 of 25), with aspirin in 84% (21 of 25), with alcohol in 56% (9 of 19), and with a combination of exercise and aspirin in 82% (18 of 22) of the patients. With exercise as a cofactor, the median threshold was 24 g (range, 4.8-80 g), with aspirin 8 g (range, 2.4-80 g), and with alcohol 28 g (range, 0-45 g). The combination of 2 cofactors (exercise and aspirin) resulted in a median threshold of 4.3 g (range, 1.1-48 g). The threshold for the clinical reaction was lowered by 63%, 83%, 36%, and 87%, respectively, compared with at rest. The mean severity grade (scale 0-5) according to the Sampson severity score at rest was 0.8 (range, 0-2), and when combined with exercise 2.1 (range, 0-5), with aspirin 1.9 (range, 0-5), with alcohol 0.8 (range, 0-2), and with the combination of exercise and aspirin 1.5 (range, 0-2).Our results demonstrate that exercise and aspirin augment clinical reactions in WDEIA by lowering the threshold and increase the severity of the allergic reaction, whereas alcohol gives ambiguous results. Furthermore, a combination of 2 cofactors (exercise and aspirin) increases the risk of reactions.

This study analyzes energy intensity trends and drivers in 40 major economies using the WIOD database, a novel harmonized and consistent dataset of input-output table time series accompanied by environmental satellite data. We use logarithmic mean Divisia index decomposition to (1) study trends in global energy intensity between 1995 and 2007, (2) attribute efficiency changes to either changes in technology or changes in the structure of the economy, and (3) highlight sectoral and regional differences. We first show that heterogeneity within each sector across countries is high. These general trends within the sectors are dominated by large economies, first and foremost the United States. In most cases, heterogeneity is lower within each country across the different sectors. Regarding changes of energy intensity at the country level, improvements between 1995 and 2007 are largely attributable to technological change while structural change is less important in most countries. Notable exceptions are Japan, the United States, Australia, Taiwan, Mexico and Brazil where a change in the industry mix was the main driver behind the observed energy intensity reduction.

Lipkin;The principles of pulse electrolysis modes selection and their effect on the size distribution of the powder electrolytic copper in electrolyte with additions of water-soluble polymers, polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) and polyacrylamide (PAA) are considered in the paper. The research conducted with use of chronopotentiometry and potential transients as well as a simulation model of the electrocrystallisation process showed that the values of pulse duration were greater than the transient time of electroactive species and the pause duration equal to the linear part of potential transient was optimum to obtain a powder with a predominant fraction of nanoscale particles . PVP and PAA additives help to reduce the average particle size in the nanoscale fraction copper powder particles to 25-40 nm. Selected current pulse mode effect corresponds to the reduction of the emergence of new centers of crystallization probability and the adatoms on the surface of the cathode movement probability.

Redding;Understanding the emergence and subsequent spread of human infectious diseases is a critical global challenge, especially for high-impact zoonotic and vector-borne diseases. Global climate and land-use change are likely to alter host and vector distributions, but understanding the impact of these changes on the burden of infectious diseases is difficult. Here, we use a Bayesian spatial model to investigate environmental drivers of one of the most important diseases in Africa, Rift Valley fever (RVF). The model uses a hierarchical approach to determine how environmental drivers vary both spatially and seasonally, and incorporates the effects of key climatic oscillations, to produce a continental risk map of RVF in livestock (as a proxy for human RVF risk). We find RVF risk has a distinct seasonal spatial pattern influenced by climatic variation, with the majority of cases occurring in South Africa and Kenya in the first half of an El Niño year. Irrigation, rainfall and human population density were the main drivers of RVF cases, independent of seasonal, climatic or spatial variation. By accounting more subtly for the patterns in RVF data, we better determine the importance of underlying environmental drivers, and also make space- and time-sensitive predictions to better direct future surveillance resources. Despite economic development and social improvements, millions of family farmers in Ethiopia are still struggling with food insecurity. Lack of technology adoption by family farmers is often considered as the root cause for low agricultural productivity and persistence of food insecurity. Based on a study of family farms in southwestern Ethiopia, we show the complex nexus between family farming, food insecurity, and agricultural productivity. We collected qualitative and quantitative data through 300 sample household interviews; expert interviews with elders and village chairmen, agricultural extension agents, farmers’ cooperative heads, as well as experts in NGOs, research institutes, and state agencies; and on-farm observations with in-depth interviews and discussions with individual farmers. Our findings illustrate that everyday experiences, culture, knowledge, and priorities of farmers coupled with ecological and political factors play crucial roles—and need more consideration than the classic ‘lack of technology’ theorem.

Granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) has immunomodulating properties that could be beneficial for adjunctive treatment of severe infections. Cytokine release from stimulated whole blood and expression of neutrophil surface and apoptosis markers in response to G-CSF were studied in human volunteers under physiologic conditions and after ethanol pretreatment. Levels of interleukin (IL)-1 receptor antagonist and soluble tumor necrosis factor (TNF) receptor-1 were significantly increased after G-CSF, whereas TNF-alpha and IL-10 concentrations were reduced, and IL-1beta and IL-8 remained unchanged. There was a significant inhibition of neutrophil apoptosis and increased expression of complement regulatory protein CD55 without changes in CD11b, CD14, and CD59 expression. These effects were well preserved after ethanol pretreatment, which per se led to an increase in apoptosis and decreased CD55 expression. Thus, G-CSF treatment was associated with a reduction of the proinflammatory cytokine response and enhanced neutrophil survival in vivo, suggesting a therapeutic potential of G-CSF for severe infections in the nonneutropenic host.

The resulting consumption patterns of fossil fuels are used to estimate the physical impacts and the economic benefits of pollution reductions on human health and on key assets by implementing the most advanced version of the ExternE methodology with its Impact Pathway Analysis. We find that the mitigation scenario compatible with 2°C reduces total pollution costs in Europe by 76%. Discounted ancillary benefits are more than €2.5 trillion between 2015 and 2100. The monetary value of reduced pollution is equal to €22 per abated ton of CO2 in Europe. Less strict climate policy scenarios generate overall smaller, but still considerable, local benefits (14 € or 18 € per abated ton of CO2). Without discounting, the ancillary benefits are in a range of €36 to €50 per ton of CO2 abated. Cumulative ancillary benefits exceed the cumulative additional cost of electricity generation in Europe. Each European country alone would be better off if the mitigation policy was implemented, although the local benefits in absolute terms vary significantly across the countries. We can identify the relative losers and winners of ancillary benefits in Europe. In particular, we find that large European countries contribute to as much as they benefit from ancillary benefits. The scenarios with limited technology flexibility do deliver results that are similar to the full technology flexibility scenario.

Wheat-dependent exercise-induced anaphylaxis (WDEIA) is a severe and potentially life-threatening allergy caused by wheat ingestion and most commonly in combination with exercise.To investigate the role and impact of different cofactors (exercise, aspirin, and alcohol) in patients with WDEIA.We studied 25 adult patients with WDEIA. Diagnostic workup included specific IgE to omega-5 gliadin and skin prick test with wheat flour and gluten. Titrated oral challenge was performed with gluten at rest, combined with treadmill exercise, aspirin, alcohol, or a combination of exercise and aspirin.A positive challenge to gluten was found at rest (without cofactors) in 48% (12 of 25), with exercise in 92% (23 of 25), with aspirin in 84% (21 of 25), with alcohol in 56% (9 of 19), and with a combination of exercise and aspirin in 82% (18 of 22) of the patients. With exercise as a cofactor, the median threshold was 24 g (range, 4.8-80 g), with aspirin 8 g (range, 2.4-80 g), and with alcohol 28 g (range, 0-45 g). The combination of 2 cofactors (exercise and aspirin) resulted in a median threshold of 4.3 g (range, 1.1-48 g). The threshold for the clinical reaction was lowered by 63%, 83%, 36%, and 87%, respectively, compared with at rest. The mean severity grade (scale 0-5) according to the Sampson severity score at rest was 0.8 (range, 0-2), and when combined with exercise 2.1 (range, 0-5), with aspirin 1.9 (range, 0-5), with alcohol 0.8 (range, 0-2), and with the combination of exercise and aspirin 1.5 (range, 0-2).Our results demonstrate that exercise and aspirin augment clinical reactions in WDEIA by lowering the threshold and increase the severity of the allergic reaction, whereas alcohol gives ambiguous results. Furthermore, a combination of 2 cofactors (exercise and aspirin) increases the risk of reactions.

This study analyzes energy intensity trends and drivers in 40 major economies using the WIOD database, a novel harmonized and consistent dataset of input-output table time series accompanied by environmental satellite data. We use logarithmic mean Divisia index decomposition to (1) study trends in global energy intensity between 1995 and 2007, (2) attribute efficiency changes to either changes in technology or changes in the structure of the economy, and (3) highlight sectoral and regional differences. We first show that heterogeneity within each sector across countries is high. These general trends within the sectors are dominated by large economies, first and foremost the United States. In most cases, heterogeneity is lower within each country across the different sectors. Regarding changes of energy intensity at the country level, improvements between 1995 and 2007 are largely attributable to technological change while structural change is less important in most countries. Notable exceptions are Japan, the United States, Australia, Taiwan, Mexico and Brazil where a change in the industry mix was the main driver behind the observed energy intensity reduction.
