    In electricity markets, bilateral contracts (BC) are used to hedge against price volatility in the spot market. Pricing these contracts requires scheduling from either the buyer or the seller aiming to achieve the highest profit possible. Since this problem includes different players, a Generation Company (GC) and an Electricity Supplier Company (ESC) are considered. The approaches to solve this problem include the Nash Bargaining Solution (NBS) equilibrium and the Raiffa–Kalai–Smorodinsky (RKS) bargaining solution. The innovation of this work is the implementation of an algorithm based on the RKS equilibrium to find a compromise strategy when determining the concessions to be made by the parties. The results are promising and show that the RKS approach can obtain better results compared to the Nash equilibrium method applied to a case study.

    Groundwater pumping systems using photovoltaic (PV) energy are increasingly being implemented around the world and, to a greater extent, in rural and electrically isolated areas. Over time, the cost of these systems has decreased, providing greater accessibility to freshwater in areas far from urban centers and power grids. This paper proposes a novel sustainability analysis of the groundwater pumping systems in Tenerife Island as an example of a medium-size isolated system, analyzing the current status and the business-as-usual projection to 2030, considering the water reservoirs available and the final use of water. The 2030 projection focused on the PV deployment, evaluation of the levelized cost of electricity (LCOE), and the availability of the groundwater resource. HOMER software was used to analyze the LCOE, and ArcGIS software was used for the visual modeling of water resources. As a result, the average LCOE for a purely PV installation supplying electricity to a pumping system in Tenerife is 0.2430 €/kWh, but the location and characteristic of each pumping system directly affect the performance and costs, mostly due to the solar availability.

    Topology control is an effective method for improving the performance of wireless sensor networks (WSNs). Many topology control algorithms can achieve high energy efficiency by dynamically changing the transmission range of nodes. However, these algorithms prefer to choose short multihop communication links rather than the long directly communication links which also energy efficient probabilistic. Note that these fact, in this paper, we propose a mathematic model to explore the probability that the long directly communication links are more energy efficient than the short links. We investigate the properties of this probability and find out the optimal transmission range which has highest probability of energy efficient. Based on this conclusion, we propose the energy efficient and reliable topology control algorithm (ERTC) to maintain the r-range for the nodes instead of the k-connection; moreover, ERTC can achieve energy efficient and network connection at the same time.

    Energy storage systems play a key role in the rise of distributed power generation systems, hence there is great interest in extending their lifetimes, which are directly related to DC current ripple. One of the ripple sources is the low-frequency active power fluctuations under unbalanced and distorted grid voltage conditions. Therefore, this paper addresses a multifrequency control strategy where the harmonic reference currents are calculated to reduce harmonic active power oscillations. The stationary reference frame (StRF) approach taken here improves the precision and computational time of the current reference calculation method. Additionally, in order to ensure safe converter operation when a multifrequency reference current is provided, a computational efficient peak current saturator is applied while avoiding signal distortion every time step. If the injected current harmonic distortion is to be minimized, which is a feature included in this work, the peak current saturator is a necessary requirement. Active power ripple is reduced even with frequency variations in the grid voltage using a well-known frequency-adaptive scheme. The simulation and experimental results prove the optimized performance for the control objective: power ripple reduction with minimum current harmonic distortion.

    This paper reviews sintered silver (s-Ag) die-attach materials for wide band gap (WBG) semiconductor packaging. WBG devices that die-attach with s-Ag have attracted a lot of attention owing to their low energy loss and high temperature operation capabilities. For their practical operation, a reliability design should be established based on the failure of physics of the s-Ag die layer. This paper first focuses on the material characteristics of the s-Ag and tensile mechanical properties. Then, the s-Ag die-attach reliability is assessed with high-temperature storage, power cycling, and thermal shock tests. Each fracture mode was discussed by considering both the fracture surface analysis results and its mechanical properties. Finally, the effective reliability design parameters of the s-Ag die layer are introduced.

    This study analyzes a buffer tank simulated in both continuous operation mode and heating mode using CFD techniques. The analysis is focused in the thermal behavior of the tank, especially in parameters such as heat exchanged, heating time, and temperature distributions into the tank, in order to propose a better design. The results of the different simulations show that the tank heats water extremely slowly and extremely evenly when producing domestic hot water (DHW), which negatively affects the thermal stratification that is critical for rapidly reaching the DHW temperature. Therefore, the main problem of the tank is an inefficient heat exchange and a poor distribution of temperature. In order to overcome these operational limitations, a new design is proposed by installing a tube inside the tank that encloses the heating coil and sends hot water directly to the tank top region such that high-temperature DHW is rapidly provided, and thermal stratification is improved. Several simulations are performed with different open and closed configurations for the outlets of the inner tube. The different results show that the heating times significantly improve, and the time needed to reach the 45 °C set point temperature is reduced from 44 to 15 min. In addition, the simulations in which the opening and closing of the water outlets are regulated, the outlet DHW temperature is kept within 45–60 °C, which prevents overheating to unsafe use temperatures. Furthermore, the results of the simulation in continuous operation mode show a clear improvement of thermal stratification and an increase in the heat transmitted to the inside of the tank.

    In the field of building constructions, there is undeniably a growing need to optimize the energy systems which are a key target in new modern constructions and industrial buildings. In this sense, energy systems are being traced for the development of energy distribution networks that are increasingly smart, efficient, and sustainable. Modern generation and distribution energy systems, such as microgrids control systems, are being affected by the presence of linear and nonlinear loads, resulting a distorted voltage and current waveforms. Thus, it is stated that industrial and residential building heating and cooling loads behave essentially like sources of harmonics. This paper presents a new framework based on geometric algebra (GA) to the definition of a multivectorial distortion power concept, which is represented by a bivector that is geometrically interpreted to distinguish the rotated distortion and distortion power bivectors in these kinds of loads. Both bivectors, and their relations to the phase angles of distorted voltage are the main subject of this paper to interpret an optimal control of building energy. Numerical examples are used to illustrate of the suggested distortion power concept, as well as the information it provides for energy control in new buildings in a more sustainable way.

    Under the Positive Energy Districts framework, cities authorities must be informed of the energy demand of districts to design tailor-made policies and strategies to promote the deployment of energy efficiency, sharing and transition actions. However, the diverse data sources and long procedures to collect data because of privacy permissions may result in a slow-down of the development of these roadmaps. To overcome these challenges, this paper is the outcome of the methodology developed under the UP2030 Project designed to estimate the energy demand and energy profile consumptions within urban areas to contribute to the stakeholders involved in decision making processes to inform them about the savings potential related with the use of energy in geographically delimitated areas. The methodology was validated in CIRCE’s headquarters, where the yearly energy estimation consumption is about 98% of the real energy consumed. The main finding of this study is obtaining a model that can estimate the energy usage for occupants’ comfort with minimal data required from the citizens’ side, which will allow stakeholders to consider global energy estimations at the district level in a fast and reliable way to design strategies in a timely manner as required by the energy transition and efficiency standards proposed by the European Union.

    This study investigated the suitability of stone fruit seed as a source of biodiesel for transport. Stone fruit oil (SFO) was extracted from the seed and converted into biodiesel. The biodiesel yield of 95.75% was produced using the alkaline catalysed transesterification process with a methanol-to-oil molar ratio of 6:1, KOH catalyst concentration of 0.5 wt% (weight %), and a reaction temperature of 55 °C for 60 min. The physicochemical properties of the produced biodiesel were determined and found to be the closest match of standard diesel. The engine performance, emissions and combustion behaviour of a four-cylinder diesel engine fuelled with SFO biodiesel blends of 5%, 10% and 20% with diesel, v/v basis, were tested. The testing was performed at 100% engine load with speed ranging from 200 to 2400 rpm. The average brake specific fuel consumption and brake thermal efficiency of SFO blends were found to be 4.7% to 15.4% higher and 3.9% to 11.4% lower than those of diesel, respectively. The results also revealed that SFO biodiesel blends have marginally lower in-cylinder pressure and a higher heat release rate compared to diesel. The mass fraction burned results of SFO biodiesel blends were found to be slightly faster than those of diesel. The SFO biodiesel 5% blend produced about 1.9% higher NOx emissions and 17.4% lower unburnt HC with 23.4% lower particulate matter (PM) compared to diesel fuel. To summarise, SFO biodiesel blends are recommended as a suitable transport fuel for addressing engine emissions problems and improving combustion performance with a marginal sacrifice of engine efficiency.

    According to the Canarian government’s plans, a complete decarbonization of the Canary Islands economy is foreseen from 2040 onwards, which includes the electrification of land transport in the archipelago. However, due to the current low penetration rate of electric vehicles (EVs) on the islands, the number of EVs in circulation is expected to grow significantly in the coming years. Despite this, the network of charging points in Tenerife is currently totally insufficient, which is why it is essential to carry out a study to design the network of charging points in such a way that it can absorb the entire fleet of EVs that is expected to be in place by 2040. To this end, there are studies on the capacity, in terms of parking space, available for the installation of these charging points, but to date there are no studies on this subject supported by mobility data. For this reason, a simulation of traffic in Tenerife in 2040 has been carried out using MATSim (Multi-Agent Transport Simulation) to determine the ideal places to install these charging points and to find the number of charging points needed for the network.

    In electricity markets, bilateral contracts (BC) are used to hedge against price volatility in the spot market. Pricing these contracts requires scheduling from either the buyer or the seller aiming to achieve the highest profit possible. Since this problem includes different players, a Generation Company (GC) and an Electricity Supplier Company (ESC) are considered. The approaches to solve this problem include the Nash Bargaining Solution (NBS) equilibrium and the Raiffa–Kalai–Smorodinsky (RKS) bargaining solution. The innovation of this work is the implementation of an algorithm based on the RKS equilibrium to find a compromise strategy when determining the concessions to be made by the parties. The results are promising and show that the RKS approach can obtain better results compared to the Nash equilibrium method applied to a case study.

    Groundwater pumping systems using photovoltaic (PV) energy are increasingly being implemented around the world and, to a greater extent, in rural and electrically isolated areas. Over time, the cost of these systems has decreased, providing greater accessibility to freshwater in areas far from urban centers and power grids. This paper proposes a novel sustainability analysis of the groundwater pumping systems in Tenerife Island as an example of a medium-size isolated system, analyzing the current status and the business-as-usual projection to 2030, considering the water reservoirs available and the final use of water. The 2030 projection focused on the PV deployment, evaluation of the levelized cost of electricity (LCOE), and the availability of the groundwater resource. HOMER software was used to analyze the LCOE, and ArcGIS software was used for the visual modeling of water resources. As a result, the average LCOE for a purely PV installation supplying electricity to a pumping system in Tenerife is 0.2430 €/kWh, but the location and characteristic of each pumping system directly affect the performance and costs, mostly due to the solar availability.

    Topology control is an effective method for improving the performance of wireless sensor networks (WSNs). Many topology control algorithms can achieve high energy efficiency by dynamically changing the transmission range of nodes. However, these algorithms prefer to choose short multihop communication links rather than the long directly communication links which also energy efficient probabilistic. Note that these fact, in this paper, we propose a mathematic model to explore the probability that the long directly communication links are more energy efficient than the short links. We investigate the properties of this probability and find out the optimal transmission range which has highest probability of energy efficient. Based on this conclusion, we propose the energy efficient and reliable topology control algorithm (ERTC) to maintain the r-range for the nodes instead of the k-connection; moreover, ERTC can achieve energy efficient and network connection at the same time.

One of the ripple sources is the low-frequency active power fluctuations under unbalanced and distorted grid voltage conditions. Therefore, this paper addresses a multifrequency control strategy where the harmonic reference currents are calculated to reduce harmonic active power oscillations. The stationary reference frame (StRF) approach taken here improves the precision and computational time of the current reference calculation method. Additionally, in order to ensure safe converter operation when a multifrequency reference current is provided, a computational efficient peak current saturator is applied while avoiding signal distortion every time step. If the injected current harmonic distortion is to be minimized, which is a feature included in this work, the peak current saturator is a necessary requirement. Active power ripple is reduced even with frequency variations in the grid voltage using a well-known frequency-adaptive scheme. The simulation and experimental results prove the optimized performance for the control objective: power ripple reduction with minimum current harmonic distortion.

    This paper reviews sintered silver (s-Ag) die-attach materials for wide band gap (WBG) semiconductor packaging. WBG devices that die-attach with s-Ag have attracted a lot of attention owing to their low energy loss and high temperature operation capabilities. For their practical operation, a reliability design should be established based on the failure of physics of the s-Ag die layer. This paper first focuses on the material characteristics of the s-Ag and tensile mechanical properties. Then, the s-Ag die-attach reliability is assessed with high-temperature storage, power cycling, and thermal shock tests. Each fracture mode was discussed by considering both the fracture surface analysis results and its mechanical properties. Finally, the effective reliability design parameters of the s-Ag die layer are introduced.

    This study analyzes a buffer tank simulated in both continuous operation mode and heating mode using CFD techniques. The analysis is focused in the thermal behavior of the tank, especially in parameters such as heat exchanged, heating time, and temperature distributions into the tank, in order to propose a better design. The results of the different simulations show that the tank heats water extremely slowly and extremely evenly when producing domestic hot water (DHW), which negatively affects the thermal stratification that is critical for rapidly reaching the DHW temperature. Therefore, the main problem of the tank is an inefficient heat exchange and a poor distribution of temperature. In order to overcome these operational limitations, a new design is proposed by installing a tube inside the tank that encloses the heating coil and sends hot water directly to the tank top region such that high-temperature DHW is rapidly provided, and thermal stratification is improved. Several simulations are performed with different open and closed configurations for the outlets of the inner tube. The different results show that the heating times significantly improve, and the time needed to reach the 45 °C set point temperature is reduced from 44 to 15 min. In addition, the simulations in which the opening and closing of the water outlets are regulated, the outlet DHW temperature is kept within 45–60 °C, which prevents overheating to unsafe use temperatures. Furthermore, the results of the simulation in continuous operation mode show a clear improvement of thermal stratification and an increase in the heat transmitted to the inside of the tank.

    In the field of building constructions, there is undeniably a growing need to optimize the energy systems which are a key target in new modern constructions and industrial buildings. In this sense, energy systems are being traced for the development of energy distribution networks that are increasingly smart, efficient, and sustainable. Modern generation and distribution energy systems, such as microgrids control systems, are being affected by the presence of linear and nonlinear loads, resulting a distorted voltage and current waveforms. Thus, it is stated that industrial and residential building heating and cooling loads behave essentially like sources of harmonics. This paper presents a new framework based on geometric algebra (GA) to the definition of a multivectorial distortion power concept, which is represented by a bivector that is geometrically interpreted to distinguish the rotated distortion and distortion power bivectors in these kinds of loads. Both bivectors, and their relations to the phase angles of distorted voltage are the main subject of this paper to interpret an optimal control of building energy. Numerical examples are used to illustrate of the suggested distortion power concept, as well as the information it provides for energy control in new buildings in a more sustainable way.

    Under the Positive Energy Districts framework, cities authorities must be informed of the energy demand of districts to design tailor-made policies and strategies to promote the deployment of energy efficiency, sharing and transition actions. However, the diverse data sources and long procedures to collect data because of privacy permissions may result in a slow-down of the development of these roadmaps. To overcome these challenges, this paper is the outcome of the methodology developed under the UP2030 Project designed to estimate the energy demand and energy profile consumptions within urban areas to contribute to the stakeholders involved in decision making processes to inform them about the savings potential related with the use of energy in geographically delimitated areas. The methodology was validated in CIRCE’s headquarters, where the yearly energy estimation consumption is about 98% of the real energy consumed. The main finding of this study is obtaining a model that can estimate the energy usage for occupants’ comfort with minimal data required from the citizens’ side, which will allow stakeholders to consider global energy estimations at the district level in a fast and reliable way to design strategies in a timely manner as required by the energy transition and efficiency standards proposed by the European Union.

    This study investigated the suitability of stone fruit seed as a source of biodiesel for transport. Stone fruit oil (SFO) was extracted from the seed and converted into biodiesel. The biodiesel yield of 95.75% was produced using the alkaline catalysed transesterification process with a methanol-to-oil molar ratio of 6:1, KOH catalyst concentration of 0.5 wt% (weight %), and a reaction temperature of 55 °C for 60 min. The physicochemical properties of the produced biodiesel were determined and found to be the closest match of standard diesel. The engine performance, emissions and combustion behaviour of a four-cylinder diesel engine fuelled with SFO biodiesel blends of 5%, 10% and 20% with diesel, v/v basis, were tested. The testing was performed at 100% engine load with speed ranging from 200 to 2400 rpm. The average brake specific fuel consumption and brake thermal efficiency of SFO blends were found to be 4.7% to 15.4% higher and 3.9% to 11.4% lower than those of diesel, respectively. The results also revealed that SFO biodiesel blends have marginally lower in-cylinder pressure and a higher heat release rate compared to diesel. The mass fraction burned results of SFO biodiesel blends were found to be slightly faster than those of diesel. The SFO biodiesel 5% blend produced about 1.9% higher NOx emissions and 17.4% lower unburnt HC with 23.4% lower particulate matter (PM) compared to diesel fuel. To summarise, SFO biodiesel blends are recommended as a suitable transport fuel for addressing engine emissions problems and improving combustion performance with a marginal sacrifice of engine efficiency.

    According to the Canarian government’s plans, a complete decarbonization of the Canary Islands economy is foreseen from 2040 onwards, which includes the electrification of land transport in the archipelago. However, due to the current low penetration rate of electric vehicles (EVs) on the islands, the number of EVs in circulation is expected to grow significantly in the coming years. Despite this, the network of charging points in Tenerife is currently totally insufficient, which is why it is essential to carry out a study to design the network of charging points in such a way that it can absorb the entire fleet of EVs that is expected to be in place by 2040. To this end, there are studies on the capacity, in terms of parking space, available for the installation of these charging points, but to date there are no studies on this subject supported by mobility data. For this reason, a simulation of traffic in Tenerife in 2040 has been carried out using MATSim (Multi-Agent Transport Simulation) to determine the ideal places to install these charging points and to find the number of charging points needed for the network.
