    Climate change is a global problem, which affects the various geographical regions at different levels. It is also associated with a wide range of human health problems, which pose a burden to health systems, especially in regions such as Africa. Indeed, across the African continent public health systems are under severe pressure, partly due to their fragile socioeconomic conditions. This paper reports on a cross-sectional study in six African countries (Ghana, Nigeria, South Africa, Namibia, Ethiopia, and Kenya) aimed at assessing their vulnerabilities to climate change, focusing on its impacts on human health. The study evaluated the levels of information, knowledge, and perceptions of public health professionals. It also examined the health systems’ preparedness to cope with these health hazards, the available resources, and those needed to build resilience to the country’s vulnerable population, as perceived by health professionals. The results revealed that 63.1% of the total respondents reported that climate change had been extensively experienced in the past years, while 32% claimed that the sampled countries had experienced them to some extent. Nigerian respondents recorded the highest levels (67.7%), followed by Kenya with 66.6%. South Africa had the lowest level of impact as perceived by the respondents (50.0%) when compared with the other sampled countries. All respondents from Ghana and Namibia reported that health problems caused by climate change are common in the two countries. As perceived by the health professionals, the inadequate resources reiterate the need for infrastructural resources, medical equipment, emergency response resources, and technical support. The study’s recommendations include the need to improve current policies at all levels (i.e., national, regional, and local) on climate change and public health and to strengthen health professionals’ skills. Improving the basic knowledge of health institutions to better respond to a changing climate is also recommended. The study provides valuable insights which may be helpful to other nations in Sub-Saharan Africa.

    The decarbonisation of heating in the United Kingdom is likely to entail both the mass adoption of heat pumps and widespread development of district heating infrastructure. Estimation of the spatially disaggregated heat demand is needed for both electrical distribution network with electrified heating and for the development of district heating. The temporal variation of heat demand is important when considering the operation of district heating, thermal energy storage and electrical grid storage. The difference between the national and urban heat demands profiles will vary due to the type and occupancy of buildings leading to temporal variations which have not been widely surveyed. This paper develops a high-resolution spatiotemporal heat load model for Great Britain (GB: England, Scotland a Wales) by identifying the appropriate datasets, archetype segmentation and characterisation for the domestic and nondomestic building stock. This is applied to a thermal model and calibrated on the local scale using gas consumption statistics. The annual GB heat demand was in close agreement with other estimates and the peak demand was 219 GWth. The urban heat demand was found to have a lower peak to trough ratio than the average national demand profile. This will have important implications for the uptake of heating technologies and design of district heating.

    AbstractSolar fuels offer a promising approach to provide sustainable fuels by harnessing sunlight1,2. Following a decade of advancement, Cu2O photocathodes are capable of delivering a performance comparable to that of photoelectrodes with established photovoltaic materials3–5. However, considerable bulk charge carrier recombination that is poorly understood still limits further advances in performance6. Here we demonstrate performance of Cu2O photocathodes beyond the state-of-the-art by exploiting a new conceptual understanding of carrier recombination and transport in single-crystal Cu2O thin films. Using ambient liquid-phase epitaxy, we present a new method to grow single-crystal Cu2O samples with three crystal orientations. Broadband femtosecond transient reflection spectroscopy measurements were used to quantify anisotropic optoelectronic properties, through which the carrier mobility along the [111] direction was found to be an order of magnitude higher than those along other orientations. Driven by these findings, we developed a polycrystalline Cu2O photocathode with an extraordinarily pure (111) orientation and (111) terminating facets using a simple and low-cost method, which delivers 7 mA cm−2 current density (more than 70% improvement compared to that of state-of-the-art electrodeposited devices) at 0.5 V versus a reversible hydrogen electrode under air mass 1.5 G illumination, and stable operation over at least 120 h.

    Pyroelectric energy harvesting has the ability to transform wasted heat into useful energy and as such has a potential to create “green” energy from freely available sources such as ambient temperature changes, and contribute to the fight against climate change. Current pyroelectrics applications are limited to low-power electronics, portable systems or tasks needing only very low range of power (μW–mW). Developing further this highly promising technology should ultimately lead to the creation of more powerful, autonomous and self-powered electronic devices that could one day use to recycle currently “lost” thermal energy to power electronic devices in both domestic and industrial settings. To the best of our knowledge, hexagonal phase ZnS (wurtzite ZnS) has not been studied as a possible energy harvesting pyroelectric material despite w-ZnS being isostructural to the well-exploited and widely praised hexagonal ZnO [1]. In addition, the Tc temperature (1020 ˚C for bulk material) is high enough for ZnS that it has the ability to operate at higher temperature that are good match with the working temperature of power plants and automobiles, and hence w-ZnS ceramics should have a potential to be used in pyroelectric harvesters of waste heat coming from those activities [2]. Here we report on the pyroelectric output registered for a wurtzite phase ZnS ceramic fabricated as part of our project. To probe the pyroelectric output for a w-ZnS ceramic a simple device (a “pyro-cell”) was created by evaporating gold electrods on both sides of a ceramic sample, which was mounted on a Cu-metalized rectangular insulating base (vetronite) using silver paint. This device is stable from room temperature up to approximately 180°C. Two different heating and cooling testing set-ups were established: Set-up n°1 used an industrial scale laser, providing a source with fast temperature change, and Set-up n°2 had a standard lab hot plate heating element, providing a much slower temperature change. The characterization required an accurate measurement of the currents of the order of 10-9 A. In addition, using the Pyroelectric Test System (PK‐SPIV17T, State College, PA, USA) with a Keithley 6517 B Picoammeter, we were able to measure the pyroelectric coefficient and monitor its change at different frequencies as a function of temperature from 20 °C up to 150° C, with a heating rate of between 2 and 10 °C/min.     There is a widely believed myth that replacing the use of fossil fuels largely by renewable forms of energy is, with a possible exception of nuclear power, critically dependent on the development of appropriate new technologies. Accordingly, it is held that decarbonizing straight away is particularly difficult and expensive. There was a time when this idea had an element of reality, but this is no longer the case. Unfortunately, belief in this myth is shared by those in positions of influence. This paper serves to document that this presumed reality no longer holds, although the misconception may have been based on fact in the past. Whilst the survey of the available technology offered concentrates on electricity supply, it also documents that manufacture of synthetic fuels via hydrogen obtained by electrolysis of water and CO2 integrates smoothly with electricity grid stabilization as well as reducing the CO2 content of the atmosphere. The likely price and cost development in the energy market is also reviewed. In addition the role of CCS, in practice mainly capture from the air and industrial processes other than power generation is reviewed against the background of the cost effective generation of electricity by harvesting renewable forms of energy.

    Le Pakistan traverse une crise énergétique terrifiante et dévastatrice. Récemment, la prévision de la consommation d'énergie s'est intensifiée par rapport à sa capacité de production, ce qui est problématique pour la stabilité sociale et économique du Pakistan. Par conséquent, il est essentiel d'examiner le lien entre la consommation d'électricité, les prix de l'électricité, la transition urbaine, les autres utilisations d'électricité et l'expansion économique de 1970 à 2018 au Pakistan. For analysis, the second-generation econometric technique of Lee and Strazicich (2013), novel Augmented Autoregressive Distributed Lag (AARDL), and Frequency Domain Causality (FDC) is useful to detect the long-medium and short-run association among the variables. The results show that power consumption stimulates economic expansion in the short and long-run, though the rise in power prices declines economic activity in the short and long-run. Also, urban transition and other electricity use are a substantial positive and negative impact on economic expansion in the short and long-run.     Abstract Bioenergy crops are one of the renewable energy options available to decarbonise the energy sector in Scotland and help to achieve the overall planned target of 80% reduction in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2050. A process-based model for poplar and willow developed for simulating the effect of different environmental and management options on growth and biomass yield was used to estimate the GHG abatement potential (GHG-AP) under different crop management options in Scotland. The model results of annual wood yield did not show a strong relation with any of the environmental factors except that of initial soil organic carbon (SOC) content. Increasing plant density and decreasing harvest frequency increased GHG-AP. Application of N-fertilizers at a rate of 50–100 kg N ha−1 resulted in the buildup of carbon in soils with less than 180 Mg C ha−1. However, in soils with greater SOC contents, annual emissions resulting from N fertilizer application were greater than the carbon saving through marginal increases in wood yield and SOC changes. The best management scenario in terms of economic and environmental objectives depends on identifying an optimum plant density based on the site specific conditions with a fertilizer application of 20–100 kg ha−1 y−1 and a five year harvest interval. Even under the best economic scenarios, SRC willow and poplar have a GHG-AP ranging from 9.9 to 11.6 and 8.8–10.0 Mg CO2 eq. ha−1 y−1, respectively. Under the best environmental scenarios this range increases to 10.5- 13.2 and 9–11.1 Mg CO2 eq. ha−1 y−1 for willow and poplar, respectively.

    The hygrothermal behaviour of an internally insulated historic wall is still hard to predict, mainly because the physical characteristics of the materials composing the historic wall are unknown. In this study, the hygrothermal assessment of an internally thermal insulated masonry wall of an historic palace located in Ferrara, in Italy, is shown. In situ non-destructive monitoring method is combined with a hygrothermal simulation tool, aiming to better analyse and discuss future refurbishment scenarios. In this context, the original U-value of the wall (not refurbished) is decreased from 1.44 W/m2K to 0.26 W/m2K (10 cm stone wool). Under the site specific conditions of this wall, not reached by the sun or rain, it was verified that even in the absence of vapour barrier, no frost damage is likely to occur and the condensation risk is very limited. Authors proposed further discussion based on simulation. The results showed that the introduction of a second gypsum board to the studied technology compensated such absence, while the reduction of the insulation material thickness provides a reduction of RH peaks in the interstitial area by 1%; this second solution proved to be more efficient, providing a 3% RH reduction and the avoidance of further thermal losses.
