Hensen in OpenAIREAromatization of furan and substituted furans over zeolite catalysts is a promising reaction to convert cellulose-derived compounds into valuable aromatic hydrocarbons and light olefins. A lack of understanding of the reaction mechanism however hinders further development of this process. Here, we propose the reaction mechanism, underlying the chemistry of furan and methanol co-aromatization over HZSM-5 zeolite catalyst. Applying 13C isotope labeling in a combination with NMR spectroscopy and high temporal resolution gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis, we demonstrate that aromatization of furan and methanol are not mechanistically separated and can be described within the dual-cycle hydrocarbon pool mechanism. Cofeeding furan with methanol leads to a significant enhancement of light aromatics selectivity and increased catalyst lifetime.

Daan Crommelin in OpenAIREThe unpredictable nature of wind energy makes its integration to the electric grid highly challenging. However, these challenges can be addressed by incorporating storage devices (batteries) in the system. We perform an overall assessment of a single domestic power system with a wind turbine supported by an energy storage device. The aim is to investigate the best operation mode of the storage device such that the occurrence of large power spills can be minimized. For estimating the small probability of large power spills, we use the splitting technique for rare-event simulations. An appropriate Importance Function for splitting is formulated such that it reduces the work-load of the probability estimator as compared to the conventional Crude Monte Carlo probability estimator. Simulation results show that the ramp constraints imposed on the charging/discharging rate of the storage device plays a pivotal role in mitigating large power spills. It is observed that by employing a new charging strategy for the storage device large power spills can be minimized further. There exists a trade-off between reducing the large power spills versus reducing the average power spills.

However, a quantitative relationship between the magnitude of the dark current density under reverse bias ( Jd) and the properties of the bulk heterojunction (BHJ) active layer has so far not been established. Here, a systematic analysis of Jd in state‐of‐the‐art BHJ OPDs using five polymers with a range of energy levels and charge transport characteristics is presented. The magnitude and activation energy of Jd are explained using a model that assumes charge injection from the metal contacts into an energetically disordered semiconductor. By relating Jd to material parameters, insights into the origin of Jd are obtained that enable the future selection of successful OPD materials.

P.T. Lang in OpenAIREAbstract Pellet edge localized mode (ELM) triggering is a well-established scheme for decreasing the time between two successive ELM crashes below its natural value. Reliable ELM pacing has been demonstrated experimentally in several devices, increasing the ELM frequency considerably. However, it was also shown that the frequency cannot be increased arbitrarily due to a so-called lag-time. During this time, after a preceding natural or triggered ELM crash, neither a natural ELM crash occurs nor is it possible to trigger an ELM crash by pellet injection. For this article, pellet ELM triggering simulations are advanced beyond previous studies in two ways. Firstly, realistic E × B and diamagnetic background flows are included. And secondly, the pellet is injected at different stages of the pedestal build-up. This allows us to recover the lag time for the first time in simulations and investigate it in detail. A series of nonlinear extended MHD simulations is performed to investigate the plasma dynamics resulting from an injection at different time points during the pedestal build-up. The experimentally observed lag-time is qualitatively reproduced. In particular, a sharp transition is observed between the regime where no ELMs can be triggered and the regime where pellet injection causes an ELM crash. Via variations of pellet parameters and injection time, the two regimes are studied and compared in detail, revealing pronounced differences in the nonlinear dynamics. The toroidal mode spectrum is significantly broader when an ELM crash is triggered, enhancing the stochasticity and therefore also the losses of thermal energy along magnetic field lines. In the heat fluxes to the divertor targets, pronounced toroidal asymmetries are observed. In the case of high injection velocities leading to deep penetration, the excitation of core modes like the 2/1 neoclassical tearing mode is also observed.

Especially for long distance bulk power transfer, high voltage direct current technology promises superior features. Adding a circuit to a transmission corridor is one method of significantly increasing power transfer capability. Converting an existing AC circuit for DC operation is another method that additionally decreases investment in new lines and towers. Consequences of such application are various AC/DC interaction phenomena on either AC or DC lines for both steady and transient conditions. This paper presents a study on AC/DC transmission system interactions for a hybrid tower configuration. In normal operation DC voltage showed no significant fundamental AC frequency component, while induced transient overvoltages displayed notable levels.

Smeding;A 140 l lab scale shell-and-tube PCM heat storage was built and tested, and the experimental results were compared to a numerical model. Natural convection in the PCM was found to significantly influence the local temperature distribution in the storage vessel, which could not be predicted well by the model, since the model assumes only conductive heat transport in the PCM. Nevertheless, the overall thermal power output of the storage could be predicted fairly well, if a correction term was used in the model to compensate for the enhanced heat transfer in the molten PCM. Experimentally, a horizontal orientation was found to be beneficial due to increased heat exchange during charging (melting). Comparing the two PCMs used in the testing (RT70 and MgCl2·6H2O), it was found that the RT70 had stable performance while the salt hydrate showed a reduced melting enthalpy which was ascribed to phase separation. For the RT70, a thermal power of 5 kW is obtained during phase change in the charging phase, and 3.5–2 kW during phase change in the discharging phase, while for MgCl2·6H2O this was 3.5 kW and 3–2 kW respectively.
